The murder of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida, was a lethal example of the racist and mortally flawed "stand your ground" laws.
If you recall, a "stand your ground" law allows individuals to shoot and, in some cases, even kill other people based on the claim that the shooter "perceived" that their life was being threatened. Technically, the lawyers for Zimmerman (who has since his shooting of Trayvon Martin been involved in several acts of violence and repeatedly tweeted racist comments) argued his case on the basis of what might be called standard self-defense law.

Two Harvard Law School organizations debated gun rights and regulations at a Colloquium on Gun Control this Thursday night. The Federalist Society, a conservative, moderate, and libertarian group, argued for the preeminence of the Second Amendment in granting citizens the right to bear arms, while the American Constitution Society, a progressive organization, contended that guns’ detriments outweigh their benefits. |

The Gorillas for Concealed Carry club braved the pouring rain and cold weather to host an information booth on the south side of the student center on Friday, Oct. 30.
The group’s goal is to inform students not only about concealed carry, but also about gun safety, personal protection and behaving responsibly around weapons.
Cody Wilkins, senior in construction engineering technology, has been part of the organization since 2012.
“We are about promoting gun safety and rights,” he said. “We also help students learn about different state and national gun laws.” |

The November 4 mass stabbing at University of California Merced comes just weeks after Governor Jerry Brown (D) barred concealed carry permit holders from carrying guns on campus for self-defense.
An exemption in California law had allowed concealed permit holders to keep guns on their persons on campus for self-defense until October 10, when Brown signed Senator Lois Wolk’s (D-Davis) ban on campus carry. |

We badly need stronger laws to commit people to psychiatric treatment when they cannot understand that need due to their illnesses. Too many people are on the street and in jails for lack of treatment opportunities. We need more mental health treatment resources in order to help them. The Cornyn/McSally, Murphy and Cassidy/Murphy bills pending in Congress could improve this.
‘Safe storage’ (which can’t effectively be mandated anyway) is not, when someone in the household is suicidal or homicidal. Removing them is best. So, along with ensuring treatment, laws permitting temporary custodianship of firearms are important to remove that too easy temptation when people are vulnerable. |

A coalition of police chiefs that has made repeated calls for gun control initiatives wrote the President on Wednesday seeking increased funds and a new director for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
The National Law Enforcement Partnership to Prevent Gun Violence, composed of an alliance of various police chief lobbying groups, decried the fact the agency has been without a permanent director since March when B. Todd Jones resigned. |

Fact is, mindless gun-free zones are what mass shootings have in common. They are killing zones, free from good guys with guns. That’s why the Aurora movie theater killer chose the more distant theater where guns were not allowed and thus where he wouldn’t have to worry about his plan being foiled.
Still, too many people remain in denial.
Recently, an Olive Garden employee asked an on duty Kansas City police officer who was in full uniform to leave the restaurant because he was—wait for it—carrying a gun!

On November 3, voters kept the Virginia Senate in the hands of pro-gun Republicans, yet Gabby Giffords’ gun control group–Americans for Responsible Solutions (ARS)–claimed victory because a Democrat they supported won a seat vacated by a Democrat.
In other words, the GOP controlled the VA Senate by a margin of 21-19 on November 2 and awoke on November 4 to find they had staved off anti-Second Amendment opposition and were still holding the Senate by a margin of 21-19. Nonetheless, Giffords & Co. claimed victory. In fact, they claimed a string of unbroken victories from 2013 until now. |

A Los Angeles ordinance signed into law by Mayor Eric Garcetti in August and which bans the mere possession of firearm magazines with a capacity of more than 10 rounds does not sit well with county sheriffs across the state.
In all, 30 sheriffs – just over half the state’s 58 county sheriffs – including San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon, have joined the California Rifle and Pistol Association, the Law Enforcement Alliance of America, the California Reserve Peace Officers Association and several affected individuals to try to have the law thrown out by the court.

Bullets fired from handguns do only one thing: poke little holes in stuff. If the little hole doesn’t go through something that’s necessary for a human being’s body to remain upright and functioning, that person can still go about their business, which may include trying to hurt other people.
Commercial hollow point technology is decades old and there are dozens of different bullet designs on the market for all of the popular handgun calibers. So aside from the marketing materials put out by the ammo manufacturers, how are we supposed to know which bullets are the most effective?

The government and society should look at gun ownership reform, rather than overarching gun control, suggested a panel on the discussion of gun rights.
The BSU Center for Peace & Conflict Studies held its second discussion series of the year on Nov. 4, “Gun Rights, Ownership, and Reform: A Panel Discussion.”
Theresa Kruczek, an associate professor of psychology, said people recoil because of the word “control.”
“No one wants to be controlled,” Kruczek said. “‘Gun ownership laws’ is a better way of saying it. We need to have laws about gun ownership and safety and policies.” |

The 2016 presidential election is just a year out, and it’s clear that the Democrat frontrunner (and FBI espionage investigation suspect) Hillary Clinton has decided to bizarrely focus on gun control and confiscation as one of her main campaign issues.
Unfortunately for Mrs. Clinton, the next 12 months will give Americans plenty of time to dissect the radical nature of what she is actually proposing, including the “universal background checks” scheme being pushed by the Mrs. Clinton, her billionaire ally Michael Bloomberg, and the various gun control groups that the latter funds. |

“Jesus wouldn’t join the NRA,” filmmaker and philanthropist Abigail E. Disney insisted in a Reuters “editorial” that really amounted to free advertising for her directorial debut. The Armor of Light follows a crisis of conscience for Evangelical minister Rev. Rob Schenck as he struggles with the question of whether it’s possible to be pro-life and pro-gun, a false assumption from the outset. Schenck is joined on camera by a mother questioning “stand your ground” laws following the shooting death of her son. With just that information, it’s not unfair to assume the film is anti-gun. Approving reviews by politically-supportive film critics don’t dispel that expectation.

A letter to the editor challenged the claim that the Second Amendment was placed into the Bill of Rights as a bulwark against tyrannical government. The critic of that belief cited the Constitution and its outline for the militia as his source.
However the Bill of Rights, of which the Second Amendment is a part, was in reaction to the Constitution and came after the Constitution. Championed by members of the political group known as Anti-Federalists, the Second Amendment was written and endorsed by them because they feared without it the people as a militia could be overpowered by a select or elite militia or standing army. |

In response to the letter to the editor, "Get NRA to help strengthen gun laws," that said "guns and ownership should be licensed," I say this: The National Rifle Association is acutely attuned to violations of the individual's right to defend one's life.
It is evident how, once you give power to the government to license, that power is abused. Just ask all those "doctors, insurance companies, plumbers, electricians and drivers" who are licensed. What gives the government the authority to regulate licensing? Not the Constitution, that's for sure. Licensing is an immoral practice by the government that most people have blindly accepted. |

One very common activity of gun owners is sharing their firearms on their own property. A person who owns 30 acres might have a small target range set up. He invites friends over for the afternoon, shoots at targets with rifles or handguns, and lets the friends use the family’s guns. Or a farm family might have a skeet or trap thrower, which flings clay disks into the air. Informal shooting events like this are at the heart of the American gun culture. They promote friendship, community and practice in the safe handling of firearms.
They are also criminalized by some versions of the Bloomberg laws. For example, the Bloomberg law enacted in Washington state in 2014 has no exemption for sharing a firearm on one’s property.

On November 3 2015, voters in Oregon’s Coos County voted to separate themselves from de jure compliance with state and federal gun control laws by giving their sheriff the job of deciding which laws are constitutional–and therefore deserving of compliance–and which are not.
This vote occurred at the same time that pro-Second Amendment incumbents were retaining control of the Virginia Senate and pro-Second Amendment candidate Matt Bevin (R) was winning the Kentucky gubernatorial race. |

The change in Clinton’s approach to guns comes as the Democratic Party at large has shifted. A spate of mass shootings has reinvigorated liberals who support strengthening gun laws, while wealthy backers have pledged money to help fend off negative ads. While the NRA and conservative groups have lambasted her, Democratic strategists believe that Clinton’s embrace of gun control is a savvy political move.
In fact, gun control advocates are more organized and better-funded than at any time in at least the last two decades. Groups such as Everytown For Gun Safety, bankrolled by billionaire Michael Bloomberg, and Americans for Responsible Solutions, former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords’ super PAC, are spending millions to counteract the NRA. |

"Smart" guns that can be fired only by a recognized user are not commercially available -- and a New Jersey lawmaker wants to change that.
Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg has introduced legislation requiring firearms retailers in New Jersey to offer smart guns for sale within three years after reliable models are available.
"What gun owner wouldn't want a gun that only they could shoot? A gun, that if it somehow got into the hands of a child, it would be rendered inoperable," she said Thursday. |

What’s scary is riding your bike in broad daylight in suburban neighborhoods in places like Colorado Springs where whacks legally carry guns out on the streets. What’s scarier is when that frightens people, and they call the cops, and dispatchers tell them, “open carry is legal.” And then the whack opens fire with the gun, kills some innocent, decorated Iraq War vet on his bike and two other people he’s never seen before. That’s scary as all hell to me.
What scares me is that I live in a place where being homeless on the river is illegal, and openly carrying guns around is not, and in places like Colorado Springs, it’s not even supposed to be cause for alarm. |
