"England is an island. If you can't keep guns off an island, where can you succeed? England has some of the strictest gun laws among western democracies. The latest law in 1997, basically barred all but .22 caliber rifles and shotguns from ownership by average citizens. In spite of this, gun crimes continue to rise in London. It seems that cheap guns are easy enough to get that gang fights which used to be settled with knives are now prosecuted with guns. Not only does this show the futility of banning guns because people who don't value the law will always break the law, but banning anything creates a black market and that economy fosters organized crime. ..." ...

"Gun owners take heart. The Constitution is on your side."

"The right to bear arms is guaranteed by the Second Amendment."

"Still, the right of citizens to bear arms is often discussed in heated tones and emotional language."

"Political assassinations, workplace violence and school shootings inevitably spark public outcries for control of firearms."

"These demands are frequently countered with refrains such as 'When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.'"

"If we bypass such rhetoric and look at the issue from a constitutional standpoint, however, we learn that there is ample legal justification for the right to bear arms." ...

"We all have various milestones in our lives. I have had a number of them since May 2001 when I came to this country on the employment visa. November 18, 2009 will be another milestone in my life – I am required to take a two hour civics test and English language knowledge test as part of my naturalization process." ...

"Now, I am not trying to come across as know-it-all sort of person. To the contrary, until about 2004 I had no clue that 'right to keep and bear arms' was an actual language of the Second Amendment. Fact is, I did not care to know much about it, much less to exercise it. And look at me now – I am a member of VCDL, and a life-time member of the Second Amendment Sisters." ...

... "This year Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg of New York, an ardent gun control advocate, who has enlisted the support of mayors nationwide to fight gun violence through the bipartisan group Mayors Against Illegal Guns, initiated a four-month investigation of gun shows in three states with weak gun control laws. ... They also proved that dealers frequently sold to straw purchasers, who had only to prove their residency in the state and a crime-free background in order to buy arms, which they then turned over to the real buyer, who would in turn transport them back to New York and other cities along the so-called 'iron pipeline.' Many of these weapons have been traced to shooting deaths." ...

Fort Hood shooting reveals shortcomings of institutionalized political correctness

"Out of the carnage committed by a lone gunman armed with two handguns at Fort Hood on Thursday, there was one refreshing moment of total candor, if not downright common sense."

"An observation to a reporter ... by Staff Sgt. Jacob Dorisca of Dallas suggests why it is that many people consider the Army to be run by sergeants ... According to the newspaper, 'Dorisca wondered whether the slayings would lead Fort Hood’s commanding general to rethink the policy of requiring soldiers to remain unarmed while on post.'"

"What occurred at Fort Hood is not a 'tragedy' ... What happened at Fort Hood is an outrage, and while politicians and the press ... are dancing around the issue of the suspect's religion, others are not so shy." ...

"In his position as a medical professional treating and diagnosing soldiers with mental health issues, both at Walter Reed and at Fort Hood, did Dr. Hasan report any veterans to the federal government for entry into the NICS 'prohibited persons' database? In other words, have 'gun control' laws enabled a mass shooter to cause the government to disarm others?"

"At this point in the aftermath of the horrific atrocity at Ft. Hood, there are a great deal more questions than answers--and some of the answers we have heard are likely to be incorrect. As an example, all the major news outlets reported for hours yesterday that the mass murderer was dead, only to eventually acknowledge that--oops--he's alive after all, but wounded."

"Given the fact of the large amount of uncertainty regarding the details, I will, at this point, offer only a few very general observations."

"One is the near certainty that the citizen disarmament law pushers are going to exploit this outrage as justification for more restrictive gun laws--they always do that. ..." ...

"In 1991, the Luby's Cafeteria in Killeen, Texas, was the site of the worst mass shooting in U.S. history -- at least, it was at the time. (The Virginia Tech massacre was worse.) A man named George Hennard rammed his truck into the restaurant, then proceeded to fatally shoot 23 people and injure 20. Hennard then committed suicide. Killeen is the home of Fort Hood, the scene of yesterday's mass shooting."

"One of the customers present during the Luby's massacre was Suzanna Hupp, who had brought a gun with her that day, but left it in her car. Hupp's parents were murdered during the massacre, and a result, she later became an outspoken Second Amendment advocate ..."

"As many people know by now, or are waking up to this morning, yesterday 39-year-old Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, went on a shooting spree at the Fort Hood Army post in Texas killing 13 and injuring at least 30. While Hasan is in critical condition and unconscious, some are speculating that the motive for the shooting was concern over his upcoming deployment to Afghanistan."

"Regardless of motive, there are several lessons that we can take away from this incident." ...

"Not even soldiers on an American military base such as Fort Hood are immune from the unique threat from powerful and increasingly lethal handguns. Army Major Malik Nadal Hasan is a psychiatrist who treated returning vets suffering from PTSD and other issues of mental illness."

"He was scheduled to deploy to Iraq within weeks. Unconfirmed news outlets initially reported that Hasan used two privately-owned handguns, a semiautomatic handgun and a .357 revolver to murder 13 people (12 soldiers and 1 civilian) and wound 28 others before being wounded by a policewoman responding to the scene." ...

"Let's face it. We need more guns."

"We know the criminals have them. That's how we can tell they're criminals. That guy pointing a gun at you? Probably a criminal. Unless, of course, he's a cop. They have guns too. But they usually wear uniforms ... Unless, of course, he's an undercover cop. He could be an undercover cop. Unless, of course, he's just an ordinary citizen, and he feels threatened. It could be that. But, probably, he's a criminal."

"But, still, we do not appear to have enough guns. The tragic shooting yesterday on our largest military base indicates that even when almost everyone in the vicinity has access to a gun[sic], we are still not safe. ..." ...

"In last week's article ... I took renowned historian and gun rights activist Clayton Cramer to task for criticizing both open carry and the gay community in his Shotgun News column. That article was primarily focused on pointing out that the gun rights community is engaged in a civil rights battle and we do great harm to the cause when we divide ourselves."

"Subsequently, Cramer wrote an article entitled 'Openly Carrying Guns Can Be Unwise, Even When It's Legal' addressing some of the feedback he received from his Shotgun News column. ... he then proceeded to further attack open carry with some truly outlandish literary imagery. He starts off by calling open carry 'offensive' and 'disturbing' to our neighbors." ...

Openly Carrying Guns Can Be Unwise, Even When It's Legal

"I recently wrote an article ... making the argument that while open carry of firearms is legal in many American cities, it may not be particularly wise. Open carry in a number of states is not just legal, but protected by the state constitution. But just because something is legal, even constitutionally protected, doesn't mean that it is wise."

"Carrying a gun openly in a city can ... offend people who might not have a strong opinion one way or the other about gun control. Boise, Idaho, is about as pro-gun as any big city in the United States. But open carry advocates decided last year to go to the Boise Zoo with openly carried handguns. It was completely legal — but the reaction of other patrons was distinctly negative." ...

"The NRA and its supporters are promising to fight California Assemblyman Kevin DeLeon’s (D-L.A.) AB 962, a state bill recently signed by Gov. Schwarzenegger that requires stricter control over the purchase of handgun ammunition and bans all Internet ammunition sales. Because Schwarzenegger vetoed the same bill one year ago, gun groups were surprised by the action, reported Katie Browning on Sandiegonewsroom.com on Oct. 27."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
As I have stood in the crosshairs of those who target Second Amendment freedoms, I've realized that firearms are not the only issue. No, it's much, much bigger than that. I've come to understand that a cultural war is raging across our land, in which, with Orwellian fervor, certain acceptable thoughts and speech are mandated. — Charlton Heston
