Guns scare me. They scare me in a way that someone who's never held a firearm can be afraid. It's equal parts lack of knowledge and the preconceived notions I'm stuffing into the casings of my own hangups, slamming into a cold magazine, and hoping to hell I left the safety on.

Proposition 63 would require background checks for the purchase of ammunition, and it would ban large-capacity magazines. It would also make it a felony to steal a gun. Its supporters say it will keep guns and bullets out of the wrong hands while opponents say it imposes costly burdens on law enforcement agencies and taxpayers.

I might sound like a single-issue voter, but I’m really not. Allow me to explain. I’ll almost always support the candidate with a bold and unapologetic history of protecting individual gun rights. You’ll notice I said “protecting.” That’s a critical distinction. No government grants or gives rights. Rights are something we all already own. Period, paragraph, and end of story. So the concept of protecting gun rights is a big deal. The government’s job is to preserve the rights, any type of rights, that we already have.

David Strickroth does steady business at High Impact Tactical Firearms in Upland, Calif. It's a small shop, as gun shops go, with several dozen firearms hanging on the olive green walls and sitting in a glass display case below. He typically sells one or two guns a day.

Recently, though, things have picked up: "Now I'm selling six or seven a day," Strickroth says.

In three days the elections will be over. I voted long before I wrote this column. Probably anyone who has become emotionally entangled in this election cycle voted as quickly as they could, sort of like a child cramming all the vegetables into his mouth to escape the table. Yet shoving my ballot in the drop box at the county clerk’s office felt anti-climactic and impotent. One measly vote.

In case of an election night Doomsday, preppers are running up sales of emergency survival food.

Not many things have improved in the last decade or so like scope reticles have. We’ve been at it long enough to remember when anything but “duplex” was exotic, and generally came at a punishing premium. Today, pffft! Whether it’s BDCs, Mildots, or Horuses (Horii?), if you can’t find something that suits your aiming task, we think you haven’t looked very hard. Nothing wrong with duplex, exactly, but we wanted to teach ourselves something new. Judging by the number of slim, squarish boxes we see exiting local gun shops, we conclude we aren’t the only folks enamored of dandy glass and calculation-saving stadia.

It's expected if you're talking about Smith & Wesson Holding (NASDAQ: SWHC) that you're going to focus on its firearms. After all, they make up more than 90% of the company's total net sales and represent some 40% of its gross profits. It's also an iconic gunsmith with a storied history. But these days, you also might want to take a closer at its accessories business, because though it only represents about 10% of sales right now, it sports gross margins of nearly 50%, and Smith & Wesson is determined to make it an even more integral part of its operations in the future.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Resistance to sudden violence, for the preservation not only of my person, my limbs, and life, but of my property, is an indisputable right of nature which I have never surrendered to the public by the compact of society, and which perhaps, I could not surrender if I would. — JOHN ADAMS
