There’s literally nowhere in the United States in which a tragic mass shooting isn’t possible. The horrifying attack on Sunday at First Baptist Church in small-town Sutherland Springs, Texas, proves that. It’s clear something needs to be done to help stop similar attacks from happening in the future, but the path forward continues to be a major source of contention between those who want to expand government’s power in our lives and those who oppose such assaults on freedom. |

North Carolina law allows guns in churches, unless the church itself prohibits them. State law forbids guns inside schools. But a bill that would have allowed people with concealed gun permits to take handguns into churches that meet in private schools passed the state House in March. Guns would be allowed in schools only when they’re not being used for classes or school-sponsored activities. The bill is in the Senate Rules Committee and is eligible for approval next year. |

The shooting at a Southern Baptist church in Texas is believed to be the worst such shooting at a church in modern U.S. history. Several prominent Southern Baptist pastors have President Trump’s ear as members of his unofficial evangelical advisory council. Even so, it would be very surprising if Southern Baptists pushed for changes in gun policy, because it hasn’t been a priority for the denomination in decades. |

Agents inspected a carry-on bag and found a semi-automatic handgun loaded with nine bullets, TSA officials said. It's not an every day that someone tries to board an airplane out of BWI while carrying a gun, but it's becoming more common. |

The U.S. rate for gun deaths has increased for the second straight year, following 15 years of no real change, a government report shows. Roughly two-thirds of gun deaths are suicides and those have been increasing for about 10 years. Until recently, that has been offset by a decline in people shot dead by others. But there's been a recent upswing in those gun-related homicides, too, some experts said. |

Atrios says that if lefties want to fire people up about gun control, they need to get more passionate about it:
To inspire hardcore single issue voters you have to take an absolutist stance on things. I’m not saying this is good politics….Still, there is literally no politician who goes on teevee and says, “the courts won’t allow it right now, but if it were up to me I’d put the well-regulated back in the 2nd amendment and make it extremely difficult for people to own most kinds of guns, and we should work long term to appoint judges who have a more reasonable view of what our constitution plainly says.” |

A Madison church is reacting to the deadly church shooing Sunday in Texas by considering a dramatic step to increase security. Pastor Nic Gibson of Highpoint Church says he is in favor of having armed, undercover guards at church services. However, the plan is complicated because the church has also a school, and federal law prohibits guns in schools, Gibson said. |

The Associated Press has reported that the armed citizen who confronted the Texas church rampage killer and then pursued him with the aid of another good Samaritan was also armed with a semi-auto rifle, the kind that anti-gunners want banned.
The story quoted Texas Department of Public Safety Regional Director Freeman Martin’s remarks at a Monday press conference that the armed citizen had an “AR assault rifle and engaged” the killer, identified as Devin Patrick Kelley, 26. |

In the aftermath of Sunday’s deadly mass shooting at a Baptist church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, Morning Joe’s panel spent much of the broadcast repeatedly calling for gun control and trying to delegitimize the concept of gun ownership for the purpose of self-defense. At one point in the show, New York Times columnist Bret Stephens insisted that there wasn’t a “single instance” that conservatives could point to of anyone “us[ing] their guns to protect their liberties.” Bizarrely, Stephens had already forgotten that it was a citizen armed with a gun who stopped yesterday’s massacre from becoming even more horrendous. |

No one should ever die because someone feels entitled to pull a trigger. However, it seems that every day on the streets of Baltimore someone exercises his entitlement (if you own a gun you are entitled to operate it which includes pulling its trigger). An entitlement many say is granted by the Second Amendment. But did it really? The Second Amendment reads, “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of people to keep and bear arms should not be infringed.” |

An NYPD officer was found not guilty of second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter after he was accused of fatally shooting a man in an apparent case of road rage. Officer Wayne Isaacs was acquitted of the charges in the 2016 death of Delrawn Small. Surveillance video appeared to show Isaacs, who was off duty at the time, shooting Small as he approached his car in East New York in July 2016. Authorities believe Isaacs and Smalls, a father of three, were engaged in a road rage incident for several blocks. |

President Trump’s suggestion that the tragedy in Texas is a mental health issue rather than a gun issue deserves more than an arrogant dismissal by gun control proponents. There are roughly 90 million gun owners in the U.S. who responsibly own firearms of all kinds. They didn’t harm anybody on Sunday, and indeed one of those citizens courageously grabbed his own rifle and opened fire on the killer, causing him to drop his rifle and flee the scene. |
