The loudest advocates of gun control are well protected. President Obama said he wants more laws restricting firearms ownership because, in his hometown of Chicago, “there’s an awful lot of violence, and they’re not using AK-47s, they’re using cheap handguns.” With his own armed Secret Service detail, the president doesn’t need to worry about crime.
Illinois State Sen. Donne Trotter takes the hypocrisy up a notch. On Wednesday, Mr. Trotter was arrested on felony charges after attempting to board a plane at O'Hare International Airport with a loaded .25-caliber Beretta. |

A seven-year-old boy was shot to death by his father on Saturday in the parking lot of a gun store in western Pennsylvania in an apparent accident, state police told Reuters.
Craig Allen Loughrey was shot in the chest by a handgun his father, Joseph V. Loughrey, 44, was holding as they were getting into the family vehicle at Twig's Reloading Den in Mercer, about 60 miles north of Pittsburgh, a Pennsylvania State Police spokesman said.
The boy died at the scene of the shooting, which happened at 10:50 a.m. His father was questioned by investigators, but police said the evidence pointed to an accident.
The two were from nearby Fredonia, Pa., police said.

It was bound to happen. The gun-control debate has infiltrated the Jovan Belcher murder-suicide case. It was spearheaded by FoxSports.com columnist Jason Whitlock and ratcheted up when NBC Sports broadcaster Bob Costas brought the gun-control issue to game time. During halftime of the Philadelphia Eagles-Dallas Cowboys game Sunday night, Costas quoted from Whitlock’s column, then espoused his own views. |

A 7-year-old boy died Saturday when he was shot in the chest by his father's gun.
According to police, Joseph Loughrey, 44, of Sharpsville, Pa., and his son, Craig Allen Loughrey, 7, of Fredonia, Pa., had returned to their vehicle at Twigs Reloading Den, 8388 Sharon Mercer Road, about 11 a.m. Saturday, when a 9 mm handgun that was in the car went off, striking the child in the chest.
The boy died at the scene.

Now this tale not only shows how guns save lives, but it also kills the stereotype, Bob, that libs love to propagate that gun owners are clumsy yokels who collect guns the way sports broadcasters collect toupees.
Not so, the homeowner handled the situation with compassion, keeping the guy from endangering them and others. Any decent gun owner would say that's how it's done. |

She said she has defended "innocent" people who are asked by police why they were in a certain place or acted the way did, rather than focusing on the person who broke into the house to begin with. She likened today's use of home defense laws to how rape victims decades ago "were asked why they were walking in a certain area or dressed a certain way. They're blaming the victim instead of blaming the criminal who attacked the victim." |

Puzzling me for a long time is the inconsistency between two claims by gun and Second Amendment supporters. One is that what they worship is critically needed to defend themselves against a government that they would view as oppressive and unacceptable. The other is their belief that the US government has already become awful, stealing their liberties.
Why then, I keep asking myself, have we not seen a violent uprising among the untold millions of Americans owning guns to take back their government? Why do we not see what goes on in European nations, namely violent public uprisings against governments? |

I am strong supporter of the Second Amendment and have consistently stood up for the rights of gun owners. I am also strongly opposed to the U.N. taking any action that infringes on American sovereignty. The concepts involved in the so-called Small Arms Treaty are both contrary to our Second Amendment values and violate American sovereignty. For these reasons, I vigorously oppose the Small Arms Treaty. |

Now, if Quinn simply had chosen to veto the legislation, he would have been within his rights. Even if he simply had used his amendatory veto powers to make some technical adjustments to the bill’s provisions, that would have fallen under the traditional definition of the amendatory veto.
But Quinn did something radical. He tried to rewrite the bill to make it into gun-control legislation, which was never the intention of the legislation’s sponsors. By the time the governor finished his amendatory veto, the bill would have banned the sale or possession of semi-automatic rifles, high-capacity magazines and .50-caliber guns. |

The paper speculated on a few reasons for this: maybe there are not enough students with carry permits who live on campus; maybe students with such permits find it more convenient just to sneak their guns into the old dorm.
OK. But isn’t it also possible at least some of this preference for unleaded dorms reflects a happy outbreak of simple sanity? Is it too much to hope at least some students recognize — as the court did not — that an environment full of immature judgment, poor impulse control, overactive hormones, sexual rivalries, drug use and binge drinking is perhaps, not the best place to introduce weapons of mass destruction? |

Bob Costas’ commentary/lecture/rant on gun control to the 18 million viewers of Sunday Night Football’s halftime show brought predictable outrage from the National Rifle Association and friends, but it couldn’t have been more timely. At least seven NFL players have turned their guns into their respective team's security following the murder-suicide involving Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher earlier this month, Sports Illustrated's Peter King reported on NBC's "Football Night in America" on Sunday.
According to the report, at least one player handed over multiple firearms, telling his team's personnel that he didn't trust himself with the guns. |

“Multiple sources” in the Legislature told the Sun-Times, “It was not known that the South Side senator carried a gun or that he had any affiliation with” AllPoints. The job was not mentioned on his state ethics-disclosure forms.
According to prosecutors, the weapon was not registered in the City of Chicago, as required by law. Trotter does have a firearm owner’s identification card and was licensed to carry the weapon to and from his security job. |

The Guns for Goods program succeeded in getting more guns off the streets, but it also netted a piece of history.
“We got a very unusual vintage Japanese rifle from World War II with a bayonet,” said Dr. Michael P. Hirsh, chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery and Trauma at UMass Memorial Medical Center.
The program, which offered both gift certificates from Wegmans and free flu shots to people who anonymously turned in guns, netted 102 weapons in two days. Mr. Hirsh said 34 were collected yesterday to go with 68 collected Dec. 1. The collection yesterday was held at the office of the city Division of Public Health.
Most of the weapons will be destroyed, but the antique weapon may find a new home. |

In actuality, the full 911 tape reveals Zimmerman only referred to Martin as "black" when responding to a question from the dispatcher about Trayvon's race.

But Costas, who had three days to digest criticism by those who believe “guns don’t kill people,” revealed on Bill O’Reilly’s program he is woefully unaware of current gun laws in America – suggesting he is opposed to the unrestricted sale of “military-style artillery” and “automatic weapons,” both of which are banned.

From the perspective of rapidly deploying a firearm in an armed attack, carrying a concealed handgun is best carried on the strong-side of the body in a quality holster. However, this method of carry is not possible, or even preferable, for many people due to physical considerations, dress requirements or even social norms.
Consider the woman who is wearing a dress to dinner. How is she supposed to carry a gun on her waist? She won’t. So, an alternative method must be employed. How about a doctor working at a practice where the accidental flashing of a gun might scare patients? Or the off-duty cop taking classes at the local college? |

No black American who has read the history of his people in this country could, with a clear conscience, support gun control. Whitlock apparently hasn't read that history; he hasn't read the history of the NRA either.
Washington Examiner columnist Jed Babbin more than adequately explained how wrong Whitlock was about his NRA/KKK gaffe in a recent column. Whitlock, instead of quitting while he had only one foot in his mouth, then decided he'd cram the other one right on in there. |

On the same day that two NYPD detectives shot and killed a man who brandished an air pistol, the Times has a pointed story about how the department could do more to train police cadets in using their guns. While police recruits are presented with realistic training situations, they don't engage in enough of them. “It’s very brief, minimal," one officer with a military background tells the Times of the training, referring to it as a "factory line" approach. "Firearms training is important—it's very important. And it's something that is not taken seriously." |

According to McLean, a thug burst into the store and "pulled a gun from his waistband and demanded me and my manager go back into the office." While the gunman was distracted, McLean managed to slip out to the parking lot, where he retrieved his Glock 40 handgun from his truck. The 23-year-old Air Force veteran ran back into the store and confronted the armed thug, ordering him to freeze and drop his weapon. The gunman took off instead - without either money or lives lost.
But McLean has lost his job.
Apparently, AutoZone has a "zero tolerance" policy for employees having weapons inside the store. McLean was fired because he violated this policy -- even though he may have saved his life and the life of his manager. |
