As a gun owner and a gun merchant I have to agree with my colleague Rosa Meehan when she concludes, in her Dec. 5 ADN commentary, that we should pursue realistic measures to stop the madness of gun violence. Most gun owners and those who want to protect our constitutional rights abhor violence and want to prevent mass shootings and murders just as much as she does. All of our hearts go out to the victims of such violence.
The question in my mind is what are those “realistic” measures. As a nation we passed the Brady bill and lived with its restrictions on assault weapons, large capacity magazines and other provisions for 10 years. Was it effective in reducing gun violence? |

A Texas state trooper accused of stopping a driver for speeding and offering her $300 to have sex with him, was freed on bond Tuesday after his arrest.
Bexar County magistrate records show Department of Public Safety Trooper Christopher Champion, 31, was charged with soliciting prostitution and official oppression after his arrest Monday night.
The trooper is accused of using the woman's cellphone to text himself, to get her contact information, before she left without getting a ticket.
An arrest warrant says the woman contacted Texas Rangers, who recorded the conversation when she and the trooper spoke later.
The DPS said the trooper has been fired.

This week, the Supreme Court said it would not take up a challenge to a Chicago suburb's ban on semiautomatic assault weapons and high capacity magazines. The Supreme Court made a wise decision.
The Supreme Court seems to recognize what conservative Justice Antonin Scalia has said previously -- that the constitutional right to bear arms is "not unlimited." And yet, in light of the eerily regular occurrence of mass shootings in our country, Republican politicians remain firmly opposed to common sense gun control. Recently, Republicans even voted against a measure that would prevent those on our nation's terror watch list from being able to buy guns. |

Jeh Johnson, secretary of Homeland Security, says that stopping home-grown jihadists requires, “a whole new approach, in my view.” His apparent surprise that there are home-grown jihadists makes us wonder how effectively his department spends the billions of tax dollars we provide him annually for our homeland’s defense. Duh, Jeh! |

There is not much the government can do about the sort of terrorist threat that President Obama described in his speech on Sunday. It will always be difficult to stop self-radicalized jihadists, operating under no one's instructions, from carrying out attacks on soft targets too scattered and numerous to secure.
The only viable alternative, self-help, is one that Obama seems ideologically incapable of considering. His proposals for new restrictions on firearms move in the opposite direction, based on the assumption that the problem is too many guns in too many hands. |

More than 200 Kansas University students, faculty and staff turned out Tuesday for an informational session about concealed carry coming to campus.
KU’s University Senate organized and moderated the gathering, where some information about the imminent change in law was shared but many specific questions had to go unanswered because policies that will guide implementation of the law have yet to be written.
Many speakers expressed fear — of mass shootings, of accidental firearm discharges, of arguments escalating into shootings, of a loss of academic freedom, of increased suicide rates and more. |

Spokane police had to stop accepting new concealed gun license applications for a brief period due to a recent spike in the number of people applying for permits. The Spokesman-Review reports that the increase in applications led police to stop fingerprinting Monday afternoon so they could get through a line of people that had formed before the end of the day. |

Then Obama blamed guns, which is like blaming forks for the obesity epidemic.
This administration could not run a church bake sale. It spent $2.1 billion on an unworkable Obamacare website, but somehow it wants to convince you that having one more technical gun law on the books would have kept this from happening. Keep in mind, these folks can't even keep terrorists on the "no-fly list" from legally buying guns. And the "G-hottie" terrorist wife got into our country by giving a false address on her visa. |

The politicization of mass shootings have become an American pastime, but sacrificing treasured freedoms in the wake of the San Bernardino tragedy will not make us safer. Instead, politicians should reduce barriers for people to exercise their right to self-defense.
I first learned about the shooting in San Bernardino from social media in the early evening of December 2. Even before the blood of the victims had dried, social media was full of calls for more gun control. |

One alarming suggestion came Tuesday morning on Fox & Friends, when the program featured a series of self-defense moves students can use against armed gunmen in the classroom. The segment was titled "Self-Defense Moves Your Teen Must Know," and it placed the burden on young victims to defend themselves — not on preventing would-be perpetrators from attacking. Fox's Elizabeth Hasselbeck interviewed Krav Maga experts, along with school-age children who had learned the techniques, about how children should disarm a gunman — and then stay to "take him out," rather than running away. |

Cory Herrmann accidentally dropped a switchblade while showing it to a friend in his own home, piercing his femoral artery. Recently, a state appeals court reversed his conviction for possessing a switchblade, citing his right to bear arms.
Possessing a switchblade is prohibited under Wis. Stat. section 941.24(1), which makes it a misdemeanor to possess any knife “having a blade which opens by pressing a button, spring or other device in the handle or by gravity or by a thrust or movement.” |

A Shawnee man and his uncle have filed a lawsuit against the city of Shawnee in U.S. District court for $3 million, claiming the city violated their Second and Fourth Amendment rights in 2013 after years of having their constitutional complaints tossed out of various courts.
Jonathan Clark and his uncle Eric Clark filed the federal lawsuit late last month, arguing that the city did not have the constitutional right two years ago to search Jonathan Clark’s truck in Shawnee, confiscate a loaded handgun and charge him with unlawful possession of a firearm. |

Senator Rand Paul’s latest legislation is gaining momentum in the nation’s capital. The bill, introduced Thursday as the “Defend Our Capital Act 2015” as an amendment to H.R.3761, would loosen DC’s restrictive gun laws in an effort to allow citizens to carry for self defense.
“For too long the Americans who live in and visit their nation’s capital have been prevented from defending themselves and their loved ones. No longer should our citizens have to choose between safety or visiting Washington, D.C.,” Sen. Paul said. |

The U.S. Supreme Court gave Illinois gun control advocates a victory Monday when they announced they will not consider a legal challenge to an assault weapons ban in Highland Park. The ban was implemented more than two years ago.
"I think it's a first step to getting people to look at the issue different," says Highland Park Police Chief Paul Shafer.
Highland Park's ban covers certain military-style assault weapons, including semi-automatic rifles like those carried by the shooters in San Bernardino, as well as large-capacity magazines.

Statistics show mass shootings tend to boost U.S. gun sales. It happened again following last week's terror attack in California.
Figures show gun sales in central Pennsylvania spiked as well.
Geiser Guns in Sunbury is typically very busy the week before deer hunting season, but this year manager Matt Geiser says the store was busy in a different capacity.
"This year I was somewhat surprised by the number of customers we had that were in looking for items for self-defense," Matt Geiser said. |

Increasing right along with gun sales are the law-abiding citizens eager to carry their guns for self defense and protection of those around them. The numbers ranged from “more than doubling” in some areas to an astounding 100% increase in concealed carry applications just days after the terrorist attacks in Paris, France on November 13. After the deadliest terror attack since 9/11 was committed last week in California (the U.S. state with some of the strictest gun laws in the country), permit applications will undoubtedly continue to climb in December.
