... "Is there a left- or right-wing bias, or have the media actually managed to be objective? A serious assessment requires quantification of the output put forth by the media. The best analysis I know along these lines is the ongoing study 'A Measure of Media Bias,' by professors Tim Groseclose of UCLA and Jeffrey Milyo of the University of Missouri."

"These researchers use a clever statistical technique to construct an objective measure of conservative or liberal bias in the news coverage of major U.S. television and radio stations, newspapers, magazines, and the Internet. ... Among 20 major outlets, Fox News and the Washington Times emerge as conservative, but the other 18 range from slightly to substantially left of center." ...

... "Honeycutt wasn't about to become another robbery statistic. He grabbed the 9 mm handgun he always carries in his belt and shot the man more than 10 times, killing him."

"Honeycutt faced no criminal charges, because prosecutors decided that he acted in self-defense. But the 39-year-old did lose his job: Carrying a gun violated Pizza Hut's no-weapons rule." ...

"Employers have long banned guns from the workplace as part of a violence-prevention strategy, but those policies are being tested as states pass laws making it easier for residents to carry concealed guns — in some cases, crafting legislation that strikes down employers' attempts to keep guns off company property."

IL: Chicago Makes It Clear: City Doesn't Trust Retired Police Officers Says the Second Amendment Foundation

"The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) today expressed astonishment that the City of Chicago would carry its anti-gun extremism to new heights by insulting every retired police officer in the country."

""'We've long known that the Daley Administration hates law- abiding gun owners,' said SAF Founder Alan Gottlieb. 'But now the city is fomenting hysteria over passage of a federal law that allows off-duty and retired police to legally carry concealed handguns anywhere in the country, provided they meet certain requirements.'"

"The Chicago Tribune reported Tuesday that Chicago's deputy corporation counsel Lawrence Rosenthal said there is a potential for the city to be named in lawsuits simply because its retired officers might take advantage of the new federal law, and subsequently use a firearm in self-defense or to stop a crime."

"'Isn't it odd,' Gottlieb observed, 'that Chicago is worried about being sued if one of its former employees uses a firearm in an incident beyond their control, yet they wailed crocodile tears recently when their own lawsuit against gun makers and a local gun shop -- which they had sued over the misuse of a firearm by a criminal beyond their control -- was thrown out of court." ...

The Ohio Coalition Against Gun Violence released the following statement following the tragic shooting at a nightclub in Columbus, Ohio, where 25-year-old Nathan Gale walked on stage and shot and killed 4 people, including heavy metal guitarist Darrell Abbott, before police shot and killed Gale.

"We want to offer our sympathies and condolences to the victims and families affected by this tragic shooting," said Toby Hoover, Executive Director of the Ohio Coalition Against Gun Violence. "This tragedy only adds to the daily and horrific toll of gun violence in Ohio and throughout our country. Our thoughts and prayers are with these families.

"Although there are many questions still unanswered as the investigation continues, one thing is clear, that this tragic shooting only emphasizes the desperate need for a comprehensive nationwide, public health approach to prevent and reduce gun violence. Until we accomplish that goal, gun violence will continue."

"The Coast Guard is trading in the 9 mm sidearms it has used for 18 years in favor of a more powerful pistol, the Sig Sauer .40-caliber automatic."

"Lt. j.g. John Strasburg of the Office of Cutter Forces at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C., said the service has started to take delivery on the first of 12,000 handguns to be purchased under a $4.2 million contract. Field units will start to get them next September." ...

"He said 22 Coast Guard marksmen helped to evaluate 46 models of handguns from six major vendors, firing 15,000 rounds during three weeks of tests in Altoona, Pa., and Fort Benning, Ga. The guns were each rated on 53 characteristics, and the shooters kept detailed logs about the rounds they fired." ...

"Gun-toting, tough-talking, and anti-establishment to his muddy boot straps, Larry Mullens is an Oklahoman 'good ole boy' personified." ...

"So it was perhaps not surprising that he was enraged when his previous employer fired him for breaking company security rules that banned guns from the company car park after they found a .38 pistol stashed behind the seat of his pick-up."

"No one could have predicted that two years later he and his backers would claim an extraordinary revenge - a law allowing employees to keep guns in locked cars on company property."

"Just two days after a gunman jumped on to a stage in Columbus, Ohio, and shot dead a heavy metal guitarist and three others before himself being shot dead, it might seem surprising to hear that elsewhere a state is extending gun owners' rights." ...

"It never dawned on William Bechard that the two old Smith & Wesson revolvers he found for sale earlier this year in the Bargain News would get him arrested."

"The classified advertisement newspaper led Bechard, 52, to a man in Hartford who was selling a .32-caliber revolver and a .38-caliber revolver. Bechard, of Waterbury, is an avid gun collector and trader who owns nearly 100 rifles and handguns, nearly all of them more than 50 years old." ...

"Guns made before the late 1890s are considered antiques and don't have to be registered. Believing the guns were antiques, Bechard said he didn't give the matter a second thought until Thursday morning. Two State Police detectives knocked on his door Thursday around 7:30 a.m., Bechard said. They were there to arrest him for illegal transfer of a handgun."

"A former RCMP officer convicted of killing a drunken prisoner who had grabbed his gun was sentenced Friday to house arrest for two years less a day."

"Mike Ferguson had been through two second-degree murder trials that ended in hung juries before a third jury found him guilty of manslaughter in October. He voluntarily went to jail while he awaited his sentence."

"But Justice Ged Hawco of Court of Queen's Bench agreed with a constitutional challenge mounted by Ferguson's lawyer and ruled that he should serve no more time behind bars."

"Defence lawyer Earl Wilson had argued that the Criminal Code provision for a minimum four-year sentence for manslaughter with a firearm should not apply to a police officer, who has to use a gun for his job."

Submitter's Note: So an officer of the law is not subject to the laws he is supposed to enforce? It's nice that the courts are finally openly acknowledging this fact.

"Former RCMP officer Mike Ferguson has been given a conditional sentence for the shooting death of a prisoner, which means he will spend no more time in jail and be home in time for Christmas." ...

"The sentence angered the family of Darren Varley, who was shot in the stomach and the head in the holding cell of the Pincher Creek RCMP detachment during a scuffle five years ago."

"[Court of Queen's Bench Justice Ged] Hawco told a hushed courtroom that he is 'aware of the grief and anger of the victim's family. There is no sentence that will get rid of that.'"

"But he said he believes the 26-year-old Varley, who had been arrested for public drunkenness, tried to grab Ferguson's gun that night." ...

Submitter's Note: Regardless of the judge's 'beliefs', this was a question of fact that the jury decided when they returned their verdict.

"New Jersey Democrats were in Bayonne yesterday afternoon - and they were armed."

"But not with weapons or harsh speech, but cold hard statistics about gun safety, as they announced $1 million in federal funding for child-proof handgun research at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark."

"'When you look at the statistics, you see that 30,000 people a year lose their lives to handguns, and 17,000 of them are suicides,' said Sen. Frank Lautenberg. 'Wouldn't it be wonderful is if we could intervene in so many of those instances where the convenience of the gun was not available except to the owner.'"

Submitter's Note: A) Those are total firearm deaths, not just handguns. B) Studies have shown that restricting firearms does not change the suicide rate. C) What's to stop a suicide from being the gun owner?

"Rep. Robert Menendez, D-Hoboken, relayed that 'in the U.S., 34 percent of children live in a home with at least one firearm. That comes to 22 million children in 11 million homes.'"

Governor Rick Perry has signed concealed handgun reciprocity agreements with two more states: Georgia and Montana. That brings to 14 the number of states having agreements with Texas to allow citizens with concealed handgun licenses to legally carry those weapons. The agreements allow licensed gun-carrying Texans to enjoy the same or similar privileges in those other states- as they do at home. So Texas has reciprocity agreements with Georgia, Montana, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah and Wyoming. Texas authorities note that concealed handgun laws vary from state to state, and permit holders should be aware of those laws before such travel.
