I’m of two minds about guns. You might call one “Gunny Glenn” and the other “Gunless Glenn.” We talked through it the other day.
Gunless: “Tell me, Gunny, why do you own guns?”
Gunny: “They’re half yours.”
“No, the guns are all yours.”
“In that case, thanks for paying for half.” |

Even as homicide rates have climbed in other American cities, New York City is again on pace to have a near-record low number of shootings, and police are partly crediting refined tactics that include collecting more data and forensic evidence than ever before to go after the worst offenders. Through Dec. 4, the city had recorded 942 shooting incidents, putting the city on course to have even fewer than the 1,103 in 2013 — the lowest number since the police department began counting shootings in 1993. A majority of people who have been shot survived. As of Dec. 4, the city had recorded 313 killings, close to the 333 set in 2014.

To Corey Stewart, nothing says Merry Christmas like a brand-new AR-15 semiautomatic rifle under the tree. Stewart, chairman of the Prince William County board of supervisors, announced Saturday a holiday campaign giveaway of an AR-15 “to one lucky supporter.” Stewart is vying to be the Republican nominee for Virginia governor in next year’s election. He has been actively raising money for his campaign for the last several months. The campaign email announcing the gun give-away encourages those who enter to donate to his campaign. |

I am not a gun owner but am a supporter of the Second Amendment. However, it is impossible to ignore the following statistics. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were 32,383 fatalities and 73,505 injuries related to firearms in 2013. There is clearly room for improvement if a right we possess unnecessarily leads to injury or death in over 100,000 Americans annually. |

A bill pre-filed by Republican representatives Matt Shea, David Taylor, and Bob McCaslin on Monday would allow guns at Seahawks and Mariners games. The bill, which is unlikely to pass in the blue state, would permit persons with a valid concealed pistol license to carry their weapons in facilities owned or run by the Public Facilities District. This would mean that the weapons would no longer be prohibited in public facilities such as sports arenas like Century Link Field, Safeco Field, and the Spokane Arena. |

A prominent Tennessee gun advocate has conceded some ground in the ever-widening push for more firearms in the hands of more people in more places. Without hesitation, we hope, John Harris, executive director of the Tennessee Firearms Association, said he "might agree that a jail or prison probably should be gun free." |

State Rep. Jesse Kremer, R-Kewaskum, plans to re-introduce legislation that will allow concealed weapons to be carried on UW System and technical college campuses in Wisconsin. UW-Madison students have begun to take action to oppose the legislation before it is voted on. Several students, mostly members of Associated Students of Madison’s Coordinating Council, met with Vice Provost for Student Life and Dean of Students Lori Berquam, who said she believes the legislation is going to pass. |

It’s a happy coincidence this week: We continue our light/short MSR/AR build, but with some gear items that make great gifts too.
Timney “Straight” AR/MSR Trigger
Timney won’t be a new name to those who are exacting about their trigger hardware. We’ve run several ourselves in other platforms, and always with uniformly superb results. Got a Remington 700? No issues there. A Winchester Model 70—done. Weatherby? Even Ruger 10/22? No doubt you get our drift: If it’s rifle/shotgun length and goes “bang,” Timney has a plan—indeed, likely has had, for 70 years, and for at least 20 different manufacturers by our count. |

The uptick in violent crime last year doesn't really explain the huge surge in gun sales we've experienced. You can't pin it on any gun control efforts, either, because although there were several high-profile mass shootings in 2015, there was no serious legislation introduced to weaken gun ownership. Even President Barack Obama's executive orders kicking off 2016 were largely ineffectual. So, with crime rates remaining low and no one really trying to take away guns, why is everyone buying one? |
