Democrats in the Commonwealth of Virginia are threatening communities that declare themselves Second Amendment sanctuaries.

On Wednesday, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam said that localities could face “consequences” if law enforcement officers don't enforce the new proposed gun laws.

“There's not going to be retaliation. That's not what I'm about. I'm about making Virginia safer,” Northam told reporters. “If we have constitutional laws on the books and law enforcement officers are not enforcing those laws on the books, then there are going to be consequences, but I'll cross that bridge if and when we get to it.”

All five members of the Chesterfield Board of Supervisors spoke publicly in support of gun rights enshrined in the U.S. and Virginia constitutions during their monthly business meeting Wednesday evening.

Unlike their colleagues in Henrico and Hanover counties, however, Chesterfield’s supervisors declined to introduce a resolution memorializing that stance at the final meeting of their four-year term – a meeting that saw hundreds of concerned citizens and protestors turn out to express pro-gun rights and pro-gun regulation viewpoints.

The argument in favor of arbitrarily revoking the Second Amendment rights of college students, as is done in dozens of states, has ostensibly been rooted in safety concerns.

And it just got a lot weaker.

Two anti-gun professors wrote in the Washington Post that “campus-carry laws will invite tragedies on college campuses, not end them.” Another liberal professor, writing for the New York Times, warned that “when there are more guns around, there is more risk – it’s as simple as that.”

Newly-elected Virginia state Democrats are making good on their campaign promise to enact stricter gun control laws. But not everyone in the state is willing to accept the proposed assault weapons ban, and the result has been a massive internal conflict that’s pitted legislators against the people they’re supposed to represent.

It wasn’t on the Hampton City Council agenda, but the debate surrounding Second Amendment sanctuaries dominated the Wednesday meeting, drawing hundreds of residents and gun owners.

They filled council chambers to capacity, with dozens more waiting in the lobby.

“Sensible gun laws are already on the books. Are they going to piggy back on them?” said Richard Bryson, a Navy veteran and among 47 who signed up to address the council.

Northampton supervisors unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday night that supports gun rights but does not establish the county as a Second Amendment sanctuary.

The resolution “urges the Governor and members of the General Assembly to take no action which would violate the freedoms guaranteed” by the U.S. Constitution and Virginia constitution.

Some local governments in Virginia have passed resolutions on second amendment rights since the November election, when Democrats won majorities in both the House of Delegates and Senate, increasing the likelihood that a highly restrictive gun law could be passed in 2020, such as the one proposed in Senate Bill 16.
