West Virginia’s muzzleloader season for deer opens Monday. It’s a different season now than it was in years past. When the state implemented a black-powder hunt back in 1978, hunters had a bright, shiny new toy to play with. Even though those early seasons were flintlock-only, bucks-only, and held solely on state-managed lands, plenty of sportsmen journeyed afield for the conservative, three-day hunt.

Texas gun rights activists are raising warning flags about a piece of legislation that would allegedly modify the state’s so-called “castle doctrine” and require citizens to “safely retreat” if possible before using force against another person.

Even Snopes, the fact-checking website, acknowledges that State Rep. Terry Meza’s HB 196 “would add a ‘duty to retreat’ clause to laws pertaining to private citizens’ use of deadly force when they are not on their own property.”

‘Tis the season at the Texas Capitol for extreme gun control bills; lumps of coal stuffed in stockings and hung on mantles for gun owners in advance of the 2021 legislative session. Pre-filed by anti-gun politicians who were backed by New York billionaire Michael Bloomberg and BETO “Hell Yeah, I'll Take Your Guns” O'Rourke in 2020, these bills are paybacks to their radical supporters who want to ban firearms, defund police and make YOU less safe.

Going deer hunting in Wisconsin is something I’ve wanted to do since I was a teenager in high school. Every year, I told myself, “this will be the year I go,” only to have that year pass me by. One of the issues was that I never had a mentor who would take the time to teach me what I needed to know. When Kristin Alberts offered to mentor me and give me a spot to hunt during this deer season, I jumped at the opportunity.

On Thursday, federal agents raided the headquarters of Polymer80, one of the largest manufacturers of homemade firearm accessories. For years, Polymer80 has been producing “80% complete” lower receivers which the ATF determined to be incomplete and non-regulatable by the ATF as firearms. These receivers require holes to be drilled and surfaces filed before they become an actual, usable receiver, hence the term 80% receiver.

Nevada-based Polymer 80, which makes polymer AR receivers, pistol frames, and handguns, was raided by federal regulators over their unfinished gun kits. In a story first reported by the Wall Street Journal last Friday, the ATF visited Polymer 80 last week in conjunction with a 119-page search warrant affidavit filed in a federal court. The primary reason involved the company's PF940 series "Buy Build Shoot" kit, which includes an unfinished 80-percent Gen 3 Glock-style frame and components to help finish it as a handgun. This was despite a 2017 determination letter from the Bureau that said unfinished PF940 blanks were not classified as a frame or receiver.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Laws that forbid the carrying of arms disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man. — Thomas Jefferson, quoting Cesare Beccaria in On Crimes and punishment (1764).
