The Michigan Senate voted late Thursday night in favor of new restrictions that supporters hope will combat gun violence: banning the possession of bump stocks and of firearms that don't feature serial numbers.
Sen. Dayna Polehanki, D-Livonia, told reporters that Democrats wanted to use the final days of their control of the Legislature to protect Michigan residents. Republicans will hold power in the House, beginning in January.
"This is something that Republicans won't do on their own, so I'll stay here all night, all day until this gets done," Polehanki said. |

Lawmakers in the state House passed legislation Thursday to update Michigan's gun buyback program to require the complete destruction of the firearm and prohibit any public auction of the weapon.
Gun buyback programs allow those possessing firearms to voluntarily relinquish them.
House Bills 6144, 6145 and 6146 would make the changes to the Michigan State Police's gun buyback program, requiring the department to complete the destruction of firearms purchased by a municipality through a buyback program, prohibiting the resale of the firearm.
The bills passed on party-line votes of 56-53. They now move to the Senate in the waning days of the Michigan Legislature's lame-duck session. |

In recent years, the disturbing trend of using firearms to express joy during marriage ceremonies has grown alarmingly in Indian society. What should be joyous occasions are marred by reckless acts of celebratory gunfire, often resulting in tragedies. The question that arises is: what mentality drives people to carry and fire weapons at weddings, events meant to symbolize love and unity?
The practice of firing guns and rifles as a mark of happiness is neither rational nor justified. While owning a licensed weapon for self-defense may be defensible within the bounds of law, using such firearms to display dominance or flamboyance is entirely unwarranted. |

Bob Cottrol is a remarkable fellow by anyone’s standards — a chair at the George Washington University Law School, an occasional speaker at the annual Gun Rights Policy Conference, author and a guy with whom this correspondent has had some insightful chats about gun ownership and the right to keep and bear arms.
As noted in his biography, he supports background checks to prevent gun acquisition by convicted felons. We don’t see eye-to-eye on this one as I’m not sure convicted felons bother with background checks, and it’s sort of like having to prove you’re innocent in order to exercise a constitutionally protected right. Aside from this point, he argues “that law-abiding citizens should have ready access to guns ‘for self-defense.’ |

A man from Indiana was declared dead following a shooting that occurred early Friday morning in the parking lot of an Amazon warehouse in Greenfield.
The victim, identified as 39-year-old Isaac Riley, was pronounced dead at the scene. Another individual was found at the location with his "hands raised to surrender to deputies."
Police say the preliminary investigation suggests that "this appears to be an isolated incident between two people, and the shooting appears to be in self-defense," stated Captain Robert Harris in a press release. |

Police said charges must be filed within 48 hours after the arrest if evidence suggest a crime happened or the person arrested must be released.
The initial investigation started when officers arrived and will continue after all evidence was gathered to "enable a full and fair evaluation" and make a decision on a charge. Police said an initial arrest was standard, but in contrast, a decison to charge Lasu can only be made if evidence determines a crime was committed without lawful self-defense.
"In this unique case, further investigation is necessary to make the changing decision," police said. |

I don’t own a gun. Until recently, I’d never tried to shoot one except for that one time when I could have killed myself as a little boy. Guns are dangerous and are meant to be taken seriously. Guns can also be used for self-defense. In this context, I write this article; about whether Black people need guns for self-defense. The enemy is real whether we choose to recognize it or not.
My subtitle refers to a possible race war. Some will see this as an exaggeration despite the number of people and groups actually trying to start one. |

National chatter about 3D-printed “ghost guns” has heated up again as one was apparently used in the ambush killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Wyomingites, however, remain unimpressed and unconcerned with the plastic weapons.
“Will it fire? Yes. Will it fire numerous times accurately and reliably? 3D printed guns frequently don’t do that,” firearms enthusiast Nic George of Sheridan told Cowboy State Daily. |

Let’s get one thing straight: the PLCAA doesn’t give gun manufacturers blanket immunity. What it does is protect them from frivolous lawsuits designed to punish them for the criminal misuse of their products by third parties. It doesn’t protect them if their products are defective or if they engage in false advertising. Yet Michigan Democrats are claiming their proposed legislation is about consumer protection and holding gunmakers accountable for so-called “irresponsible practices.” |

More than two years after the U.S. Supreme Court fundamentally expanded its interpretation of the Second Amendment, federal courts throughout the country continue to strike down state restrictions on gun ownership.
Since the high court’s 2022 decision — in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen — that firearm regulations must have some historical comparison going back to the country’s founding, some state restrictions have been ruled unconstitutional. ...
Still, wins for gun rights supporters have mounted. Over the past two years, federal courts have struck down bans on assault weapons in trend-setting blue states such as California and Illinois. |

Making their case for the first time in federal court in Charlottesville, Jenkins’ attorneys told jurors his actions in support of Second Amendment rights were a “creative response” and “provocative.” They said donors “supported his idea with time, their service. They supported it with their money,” a lawyer said. “They gave and they gave big.”
“You won’t hear any credible evidence that Mr. Jenkins accepted a bribe,” the defense said. “Scott Jenkins did no such thing and committed no crime.”
The testimony confirmed much of what the News4 I-Team has reported about the case since April 2023. Jenkins is accused of taking bribes from people who allegedly wanted law enforcement badges making them auxiliary deputies. |

The natural right of self defence is one of our most essential rights, part of the first law of nature. But that hasn’t stopped governments from violating it. So the founders told us over and over that it’s up to us – the people of the states – to protect and defend our own constitution and our own liberty – whether the government likes it, or not. In this episode, we’re applying their principles and strategy to protect and defend the 2nd Amendment from federal violations. |

For decades, America's detectives have made breakthroughs in crime using gun traces. A homicide investigator typically uses ballistics and serial numbers of weapons checked via a vast network of gun shop records, manufacturer IDs and crime databases.
But those sleuthing tactics are fast becoming old-school science as a new era of weapons increasingly hits the nation's streets: untraceable 3D-printed guns and silencers like the ones found this week on suspected killer Luigi Mangione. And as the price of 3D printers continue to drop − Amazon sells some models for $300 or less − their availability will attract more attention from criminals, experts told USA TODAY. |

Michigan Democrats voted to rush gun control legislation through before Republicans take the state house majority in January, the Detroit Free Press reported Thursday.
Democrat Michigan State Sen. Dayna Polehanki told reporters that the Democrats passed a ban on possessing bump stocks and unserialized firearms, sometimes referred to as “ghost guns,” because “Republicans won’t do [it] on their own,” according to the Detroit Free Press. Republicans won a majority in the state senate by a single seat in the 2024 election. The bump stock provision passed with three Republicans supporting the Democrats, with the ghost gun law passing along party lines. |

In a coordinated legal offensive, the Attorneys General of New Jersey and Minnesota filed lawsuits against GLOCK, INC and its Austrian parent company, Glock Ges.m.b.H., alleging that the company knowingly designs and sells handguns easily modified into fully automatic firearms using illegal aftermarket devices known as “Glock switches.” These lawsuits are part of a broader effort by Democratic-led states and Bloomberg-backed gun control groups to circumvent federal legal protections for firearm manufacturers and target gunmakers at the state level. |

Thirty-five years ago, Bilal Qayyum began working to promote peace and prevent gun violence in Philadelphia. At the time, he says gang-related violence was rampant. In response, he established the Father’s Day Rally Committee, an anti-gun and anti-violence group aiming to counter negative perceptions with positive images of Black men.
“During the time when we started the campaign,” said Qayyum, director of the organization. “We realized in our meeting that we all were fathers. And that’s where the name came from.” |
