Days after a deadly shooting in New Jersey, Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson proposed three new pieces of gun legislation to the state legislature. Two of the proposed bills have been considered in Olympia before: limiting high capacity magazine rounds and banning assault style weapons commonly used in mass shootings. The third, banning ammunition sales to people barred from owning guns, is new. |

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D) must think that Old Dominion gun owners are stupid. After months of Northam and his Michael Bloomberg-backed General Assembly allies advocating for the enactment of gun confiscation legislation, the governor has told the Virginia Mercury that he will support a gun ban bill that would grandfather currently possessed firearms but require owners to register the newly-prohibited firearms with the government. As astute gun owners know, gun registration facilitates gun confiscation. Northam wants law-abiding gun owners to register their guns with the same people who have already stated that they want to confiscate them. |

There is no cheerful way of having a discussion about gun violence. Unfortunately, the subject does not take a break for the holidays. During the past two decades, gun deaths have increased by 20 percent in our country, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Almost 40,000 Americans will die of gunshot wounds this year, while several times that number will survive with physical and emotional injuries that may never fully heal. The cost to our society is enormous. |

As the year races to a close, most hunting seasons dissolve along with it. That leaves avid outdoors folks with an empty space that needs to be filled with other activities like hard-water fishing, or harvest-free sports like cross country skiing, wildlife watching and snowshoeng. Barring out of state hunting forays, I always opt to combine two of the former pastimes, snowshoeing and wildlife viewing, to eat up the large-game hunting void between January and March. |

With the end of muzzleloader and expanded archery seasons, deer hunting is now officially over for another year. White-tailed deer are far and away the most popular game species in Maine, and everywhere else they occur, most hunters will put away their guns, bows, ammo and arrows and switch to ice fishing, snowmobiling or other outdoor pursuits. But a few bold lads and lasses will simply switch gear and perpetuate their pursuit of prey and protein. |

The German Ordinance Bureau introduced an improved version of the 8mm Mauser cartridge, and added a rim to create the 8x57 JRS. The major change in the process of improving the 8mm Mauser was increasing the diameter of the bullet to 0.323 inches. The version without a rim served in various militaries around the world. And when the cartridge was finally retired from active service, the 8mm had more than a century of use as a military cartridge. |

More people are installing an attachment on their concealed carry pistol than ever, with weapon-mounted lights and laser sights being some of the most popular. Red dot optics are also a real up and comer; they may even replace iron sights at some point. However, a pistol obviously has limited real estate, so unless a person is getting one of the combination attachments that has both, should a person get a light or a laser? |

Dozens of U.S. Navy pilots have written a letter demanding Capitol Hill lawmakers and top military brass allow more pilots to carry arms on bases, and allow those standing watch at flight schools across the country to be armed in the wake of the deadly shooting at Naval Air Station Pensacola by a Saudi officer training there.
“It is reprehensible that a military installation, much less its warfighters based there, be at the mercy of off-base, civilian law enforcement when faced with an immediate threat to their lives,” the letter says.

Washington Second Amendment activists are furious over new gun control legislation proposed by Democrat State Attorney General Bob Ferguson that would include a ban on the sale of so-called “assault weapons,” limits on magazine capacity and restrictions on ammunition purchases.
Members of the loosely-knit Gun Rights Coalition have been sounding off on their Facebook page in the aftermath of Ferguson’s announcement. He was flanked by representatives of the billionaire-backed and Seattle-based Alliance for Gun Responsibility, Grandmothers Against Gun Violence and Washington Ceasefire. There were also several anti-gun-rights Democrat legislators at the presser. |

Virginia's "Second Amendment sanctuary" movement continued to see overflow crowds throughout the state on Thursday despite Governor Ralph Northam (D.) backtracking on confiscation and threatening "consequences" for sanctuary municipalities. Eight Virginia localities became sanctuaries Thursday night, bringing the total to 93, including 75 of Virginia's 95 counties and 18 of its legally independent cities. The movement—which pushes local governments to declare that they won't enforce new gun laws they deem unconstitutional—has seen grassroots support from people of all backgrounds and ages in both rural and urban Virginia. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
As civil rulers, not having their duty to the people before them, may attempt to tyrannize, and as the military forces which must be occasionally raised to defend our country, might pervert their power to the injury of their fellow citizens, the people are confirmed by the article in their right to keep and bear their private arms. — Tench Coxe in `Remarks on the First Part of the Amendments to the Federal Constitution' under the Pseudonym "A Pennsylvanian" in the Philadelphia Federal Gazette, June 18, 1789 at 2 col. 1. |
