Congress heard directly from women on the need to empower women by protecting Second Amendment rights in a hearing at the U.S. House of Representatives. The hearing gave voice to women, including domestic violence survivors, of how gun control measures often make it more burdensome for women to protect themselves, even as gun control proponents continue to tell these same women that the government and police will protect them.

It is popular for both target shooting and hunting and is used by many for self-defense. It has been used by the military establishments of most countries, mostly as a training round but also in combat. The .22 LR has been used to kill most animals, from the smallest, including some insects, up to elephants.

A new bill has been introduced in the Ohio Legislature.

If passed, House Bill 51 could change the way our local and state law enforcement agencies operate. It would enact the “Second Amendment Preservation Act," which was introduced by Representatives Jean Schmidt and Mike Loychik as a way of protecting Ohioans right to bear arms. However, local law enforcement agencies raised some concerns.

Strange bedfellows make for good First Amendment warriors in a case concerning guns, financial institutions, and free speech. Last week, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) announced that it will represent the National Rifle Association (NRA) in National Rifle Association of America v. Vullo, which the Supreme Court recently agreed to hear. The case is an interesting one, with more than a bit of relevance beyond the NRA—particularly for entities related to sexuality or tolerant of sex work.

Earlier today, Kentucky state lawmakers on the Interim Joint Committee on Judiciary held a powerful hearing to consider legislation allowing for life-saving Crisis Aversion and Rights Retention (CARR) orders to be implemented in the state for the first time.

CARR orders allow law enforcement to effectively intervene when someone is going through a crisis and because of access to firearms is capable of causing harm to themselves or others. Law enforcement can temporarily remove the person’s firearms while the person seeks help. When the person gets better, the court cancels the order, the firearms are returned, and tragedy is averted.

This week, Lujan Grisham announced her intention to push a state-version of U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich's unconstitutional GOSAFE gun and magazine ban during the upcoming legislative session that starts on January 16th. Also, the joint interim Courts, Corrections & Justice Committee endorsed a 14-day waiting period on all firearms purchases and a ban on carrying firearms within 100 feet of any polling place or ballot dropbox, giving both proposals momentum going into the 2024 session before any regular committee meetings are held where public testimony is actually taken on these issues.

Before the vigil in the church's sanctuary, Rogers said there are "proven, evidence-based solutions" to prevent the killing of children in schools, homes and on the streets of our cities and towns.

"Group violence intervention can play a huge role, and that's something Davenport is working hard at," Rogers said. "We can close background check loopholes. And we can ban assault weapons."

Los Angeles County prosecutors Friday declined to file any charges against a 19-year-old man who had been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of a fellow passenger on a Metro E Line train in the Jefferson Park area, saying he acted in self-defense.

According to a District Attorney's Office report, surveillance video from the train showing Tuesday afternoon's confrontation confirmed Carlos Carrillo-Martinez's contention that he acted in self-defense when he stabbed the victim, 27-year-old Jalil Sosa Illera.

As firearm enthusiasts and shooters, it's a challenge to broach the topic of guns without allowing things like personal preference to creep their way in because, individually speaking, we allow our previous experiences to influence our opinions. The problem is, they're best suited for you—and you alone. While I admit being partial to certain brands of Browning Hi Power accessories and parts, my goal is to explain the rationale that led to the decisions, in an effort to help you form a similar list of your own.

A Seward man was acquitted on all charges in a double-homicide trial Monday and released from custody after spending nearly five years behind bars, his attorney said.

The trial that began Nov. 6 was the third held for Joseph Chandler after he was charged with first- and second-degree murder following a 2019 shooting, said public defender Nathan Lockwood.

Alaska State Troopers responded to Chandler’s property near Seward in April 2019 after he said he shot and killed Dustin Marx, 28, and Michael White, 40, inside their van after White threatened him during an argument, according to prior reports.

Gun rights groups are posturing to defy the Justice Department’s model legislation published this week that gives states a framework for codifying gun storage rules.

Attorney General Mike Hilgers said Friday he believes Nebraska cities cannot ban firearms from parks, sidewalks and trails — something Lincoln and Omaha did after a new state law went into effect allowing Nebraskans to carry concealed handguns without a permit.

When Gov. Jim Pillen signed LB77 into law, both Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird and Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert signed executive orders prohibiting firearms at properties owned, leased or managed by the city, including parks and public spaces.

The U.S. Supreme Court has once again decided not to interfere with an Illinois law prohibiting “assault-style” rifles and high-capacity magazines.

This decision, announced on Thursday, stems from the state's response to the tragic mass shooting in Chicago's Highland Park suburb in 2022, which resulted in seven deaths and numerous injuries, Reuters reported.

Ed.: This was just an emergency motion. SCOTUS has not yet been asked to hear the case on the merits.

We recently reported how a court in West Virginia ruled that the federal government’s ban on the sale of handguns to Americans aged 18 to 20 years old is unconstitutional. Now, that same judge has stayed the ruling pending an appeal to the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals. In the case Brown v. ATF, Judge Thomas S. Klesh of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia declared the law unconstitutional and granted the plaintiffs’ motion for summary judgment. At the time, it seemed his reasoning was quite sound.

“As you know, a few years ago we proposed, and we still urge the legislature to act on … a bill that protected Second Amendment rights (that) basically … allows a family or anybody to go into court and say, ‘This is a person who is a danger to themselves and has professed to either kill themselves or hurt someone else,’” DeWine said.

DeWine said under his administration’s proposal, the defendant would get the full due process of the law. If a judge found the defendant to be unfit for gun ownership, the jurist would have the authority to revoke the defendant’s Second Amendment rights.

Some Republican lawmakers have raised concerns about the recent approval of permit-to-purchase gun laws in committee, alleging that the process lacked thoroughness.

The proposed legislation, Senate Bill 2, mandates that Delaware residents complete an approved training course within five years before becoming eligible to purchase a handgun.

Advocacy groups like Moms Demand Action and the Delaware Coalition Against Gun Violence (DCAGV) have been urging the General Assembly to advance this bill to the House floor since last session.

You just can’t make this stuff up! We detailed back in June how it was possible that first son Hunter Biden’s lawyers might choose to mount a Second Amendment defense against his pending gun charges based on last year’s landmark Supreme Court decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen. Fast forward to this week, and on Dec. 11, attorneys for the president’s son began making that case in federal court, saying that the charges of lying on a federal background check form and possessing a firearm while addicted to unlawful substances were “unprecedented” and “unconstitutional.”

In recent times, the term “Ghost Guns” has been getting significant attention in the media, painted in a light that stirs up fear and misunderstanding. At its core, “Ghost Guns” refers to firearms that are homemade or assembled from parts, typically lacking serial numbers, making them “difficult to trace”. In the media, this term is steeped in sensationalism, just like the misrepresentations surrounding “assault weapons.”

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
No one can read our Constitution without concluding that the people who wrote it wanted their government severely limited; the words "no" and "not" employed in restraint of government power occur 24 times in the first seven articles of the Constitution and 22 more times in the Bill of Rights. — EDMUND A.
