It can get cold when you’re out hunting in the woods …very cold. And while you can still have a lot of fun tracking down deer and elk even when it’s below freezing out, you are at very real risk of developing hypothermia, which is life threatening. You see, actually having a successful hunt should only be your second priority when hunting. Your first priority needs to be your own personal safety and survival, and that includes keeping yourself protected from the cold weather. |

Congressional leaders reached a deal to fund research on gun violence for the first time in more than 20 years, a major legislative victory for Democrats, researchers and anti-gun-violence activists. The deal — still pending final approval as congressional negotiations continue over a must-pass, end-of-year spending bill — would send $25 million to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health to study gun violence, with each agency receiving $12.5 million, according to congressional aides.

Investigative journalist Huey Freeman has written a compelling book challenging the notion that Border Patrol Agent Nick Ivie was killed by friendly fire. In Who Shot Nick Ivie?, Freeman lays out the case that contrary to the government’s claims, smugglers, probably from the Sinaloa cartel, shot Ivie in an ambush of him and two other agents. And he explains why the Obama administration put that spin out there. |

America still loves its cowboys. This is reflected in the number of single-action revolvers offered by current gunmakers. Ruger’s single-actions have long been favorites of cowboy action shooters and others who shoot for fun. The cost of ammo and the discomfort of heavy recoil make rimfire versions of these revolvers quite popular.

On April 24, 2019, shortly after the City of Los Angeles adopted an ordinance that was clearly designed to weaken support for the Second Amendment, NRA filed a lawsuit, calling the city’s outrageous action a violation of the First Amendment. Last week, U.S. District Judge Stephen Wilson issued a preliminary injunction against Los Angeles, temporarily blocking it from enforcing the ordinance. The ordinance required current and prospective contractors working with the city to disclose any relationships with the NRA: a shameless, McCarthy-like effort clearly designed to force those who would normally support NRA to drop any affiliation out of fear of losing business with Los Angeles.

Social media lit up over the weekend with not-so-vague talk of a second Civil War simmering in the Commonwealth of Virginia as more than 90 counties have now joined the “Second Amendment Sanctuary” movement and one sheriff has threatened to deputize his constituents in response to threatened gun control legislation by the new Democrat legislative majority in Richmond.
Into the middle of this volatile brew came Virginia Rep. Donald McEachin (D-4th District) suggesting that anti-gun Gov. Ralph Northam might call up the National Guard to enforce gun control laws passed in 2020 if the county commissions and sheriffs won’t. |

I don’t get to relax or go on vacation as much as I might like. When I do vacation, I love to travel throughout our great country, as there is much to see and much I have not yet seen. I make it a point to visit not just the common tourist sites, but the sites less traveled. I enjoy history and learning about where we came from and who we are as a republic. Sometimes I end up traveling to locations that can be described as less-than-gun-friendly to strictly anti-gun. I make a choice when I travel to these locations to be disarmed. It is less than ideal, but I want to say I have visited and learned firsthand about some of these wonderful locations.

Last week I wrote about the spread of Virginia’s “Second Amendment sanctuaries” — counties, towns, and cities that vow not to enforce state gun laws they deem unconstitutional, in the wake of the Democrats’ taking control of the state government. There are a few new developments worth noting.

With lawmakers lacking the courage to take big steps, Pennsylvania’s top law enforcement officer did what he could on his own Monday to address gun violence. Attorney General Josh Shapiro issued a legal opinion classifying unfinished gun frames as firearms. That closes a big loophole in the law because felons who were prohibited from buying guns were able to buy partial frames at gun shows and online, and then build weapons.

San Francisco’s Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr continued his long-standing tirade against the NRA at a home game Dec. 9 when he told a local reporter that “our government officials have to decide that the safety of our citizens is more important than the money they receive from the NRA.” Kerr was speaking to the San Francisco Chronicle and added that he wants more stringent background checks on firearms purchases.

The ATF isn’t all bad. In fact, they had a policy of letting illegal gun purchases go between 2006 and 2011. It ended up getting U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry killed on December 14, 2010, and let Mexican criminals get enough guns that they were found at over 150 crime scenes where Mexican citizens were either killed or maimed. And some of the guns were used in the November 2015 terrorist attack in Paris at the Bataclan. But other than that, it turned out just fine. |

One of the easiest things to personalize on a handgun is the sight system. There are a zillion sighting options on the market, each promising to be the ideal solution, so how do you decide? You’ll find post and notch solutions, fiber optics, u-notch, straight eight, and red dots, just to name a few. Heck, there are even solutions that have you stacking triangles, hexagrams, or some such shapes on top of each other.

Nevada Concealed Firearm Permit holders are set to get a lump of coal in their stocking this Christmas. Nevadans with a permit have long-enjoyed NICS-exempt status, which exempts these law-abiding individuals from having to undergo a National Instant Criminal Background Check System check every time they purchase a firearm from a gun dealer. Thanks to SB 143, which criminalized the private transfer of firearms in the Silver State, as of January 2 permit holders will be forced to undergo a NICS check when they purchase a firearm from a private individual through a dealer.

There’s no single cause or solution."

Two teenagers were killed and 15 other people were wounded in shootings across Chicago this weekend. A 16-year-old girl was fatally shot Saturday in Little Village on the Southwest Side. About 9:45 p.m., Angie Monroy was walking on the sidewalk in the 2300 block of South Rockwell Street when shots were fired, Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. She was struck in the head and rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition. |
