"Well, folks, here we are again. We've been cut off at 'Reasonable Regulation Pass' for the umpteenth time. Read the story here and tell me again what a great deal the Heller case was. The 'law,' people, is what THEY say it is. Get it?!?"

"But, he said, 'they won't bother me because I'm legit,' meaning that he had paid his transfer taxes ... submitted to inspections and all the usual inconveniences that go with complying with the National Firearms Act of 1934. I laughed in his face."

"'Do you seriously think that if people are shooting at them in self defense over semi-auto rifle confiscation raids that they will leave your machine guns in your safe? They will come to you and say, 'We need to pick up your weapons for the duration of the emergency. You'll get them back someday, and if you don't I'm sure the government will reimburse you for them.'" ...

"Let's get two things straight: 1) Banning guns does not reduce crime or make communities safer. Crime increases when honest citizens are disarmed (civilian disarmament). 2) The Second Amendment isn't about deer or duck hunting, target shooting, etc. It's predicated upon human dignity, civil rights and freedom from domestic and foreign tyranny, and for women it remains the original equal rights amendment. My own Dec. 14 Medford Mail Tribune letter, 'It's not about hunting' bears this out." ...

"Banning guns is in the news. India practically bans guns, but that didn’t stop the horrific Muslim terrorist attacks this last week."

"A football player concerned for his safety violates New York City’s tough gun control regulations by carrying a concealed handgun, and people call for everything from banning NFL players from carrying guns to demanding that the athlete serve many years in jail."

"Where is the sympathy or debate in either case over letting people defend themselves? Given that the terrorists smuggled their machine guns in with them, would anyone argue that India’s extremely strict gun licensing and artificially high prices for guns helped prevent the terrorist attacks? In fact, the reverse is more likely the case." ...

"Back when I was a kid, one of my favorite cartoon characters was Foghorn T. Leghorn, the indisputably Southern rooster of unflappable persona. In one episode I recall, FTL had just come up on the wrong end of what passed for an IED in those days, totally denuding him of feathers from the waist up. As he gathered up his feathers in his arms, he walked off, commenting, 'Fo-chune-ately, ah keep mah feathas num-bahed for just such an a-cay-sion.' "Everything about novelist Carolyn Chute is off the grid. It's not just that Chute lives in a small compound in Maine ... or that she co-founded the 2nd Maine Militia. Chute also tells vivid and unapologetically proud stories about characters who tend to be invisible in contemporary fiction — the working poor, home-schoolers, Second Amendment purists."

"Her fifth novel, The School on Heart's Content Road ... feels like the book Barbara Ehrenreich might write with John Steinbeck if they locked themselves in a Maine motel room and spent weeks watching nothing but Fox News. ... It's brave, passionate and raw, fiercely written, and so overstuffed with characters that it requires a nine-page biographical guide at the end.

A South Carolina House member is filing a bill to allow residents to carry weapons without a permit.

Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dan Cooper of Piedmont said Tuesday he has filed legislation to allow any law-abiding citizen to carry a weapon.

The Republican says concealed weapons permit laws and other restrictions make it less likely people who obey the law will be armed and does nothing to disarm people willing to break the law.

Tuesday is the first day House members can file new bills for the legislative session that starts Jan. 13.
