"The terrorist attack ... at Fort Hood, Texas brought the lack of security at such a large military base directly into homes across America."

"Leaders of the pro-gun movement, and many soldiers, weren't quite as shocked because they knew most military bases are considered 'gun-free zones,' ..."

"Whether [the] attack on American soldiers was sponsored by one of the bigger terrorist organizations is irrelevant since it gave terrorists a road map to complete similar attacks in the future. You can bet our enemies learned valuable lessons from his ability to kill so many of our best and brightest in such a short period of time. In one fell swoop, he taught terrorists where millions of Americans are essentially defenseless." ...

"Memorable occasions for me include one of my first dates with my wife (I don't understand people who tell me their wives don't like guns--establishing compatibility is why we're supposed to get to know each other before getting into committed relationships), watching a visiting Japanese executive grin like a kid in a candy store as he fired off rounds from my .44 Magnum, and ditto for a Santa Monica 'liberal' with my M1 Garand. I've had especially great times teaching my kids, but I think I'll leave that for its own resolution." ...

"John Rosenthal, writing for the Huffington Post December 15, decries the medical and human cost of gun violence in America. Again, his solution is to beat on the innocent. He states: 'On average, guns kill or wound 276 people every day in America. Of those, 75 adults and 9 children will die. In the US there are more than 30,000 deaths and over 100,000 injuries related to gun violence each year.' His solution is to further restrict access to guns by the law abiding public."

"What he doesn't say is that the vast majority of these shootings are drug and crime related. Those pulling the trigger are already not supposed to have guns and not supposed to be shooting people. ..." ...

"Right now many in the gun control movement are giddily reporting the results of some questions on a poll conducted by The Word Doctors on behalf of Mayors Against Illegal Guns. The claim is that the poll proves that NRA members support gun control measures, such as the one requiring all persons to conduct background checks at gun shows. In other words they support closing the 'gun show loophole'." ...

"'Obama's on the list for Christmas coal,' says John M. Snyder, named the senior rights activist in Washington by Shotgun News."

"Snyder sent the fabricated nuggets wrapped in a cloth pouch marked 'you've been naughty' in a USPS priority mailing box."

"'Obama deserves the coal,' said Snyder. 'He's been worse than naughty, even bad, really wretched. He's misused the presidency in a radical attempt to undermine gun rights, the right to personal self-defense ...'"

"USPS indicates it left a package notice but the item was unclaimed as of yesterday afternoon. 'Perhaps this reflects White House incompetence or unwillingness to face the music,' commented Snyder." ...

Through her experience at NRA headquarters and a newly discovered love of firearms and the shooting sports as well as a family background in shooting and law enforcement, Lisa-Marie with the support of her parents, is resolved to make this happen."

"In part one of this series, I explained how thousands of citizens are in danger of losing their right to own or possess a firearm as a result of minor misdemeanor or misdemeanor drug convictions. The present article focuses on the Lautenberg Amendment, a law passed by the U. S. Congress and signed by Bill Clinton in 1997."

"... Before this law, anyone convicted of a crime in which the possible prison term exceeded one year was prohibited from possessing a firearm. This meant felony convictions in most states."

"Now, (since 1997) federal law makes it a crime to own or possess a firearm if a citizen is convicted of a domestic violence misdemeanor offense under local, federal, or state law. ..." ...

"Let me begin by saying that I am a gun owner and avid hunter and I do believe that every American has the right to own guns. However, the recent murder of another local police officer by an assailant using an assault weapon should be the last straw."

"Assault rifles are designed with a single purpose -- to kill human beings. They are weapons of war. Assault weapons belong only in the hands of the military. These guns have no role in peaceful society."

"It is time for Congress to ban the sale and ownership of fully automatic weapons. This cannot happen until the National Rifle Association (NRA) abandons its obstructionist policies." ...

"Mr. Tarkanian 'is a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and has never reached out to the Brady Campaign,' Mr. Fisfis said. He said later that Dan Burdish, a consultant who now works for their Republican primary opponent Sue Lowden, had 'freelanced' by making arrangements for the call without Mr. Tarkanian's knowledge."

"Four of the candidates seeking the Republican nomination for the 11th Congressional District turned out in Princeton Tuesday to debate both each other and the candidates who weren’t present."

"Henry Meers, Dave White, Darrel Miller and David McAloon sat on a stage at the Bureau County Metro Center under signs bearing their names, while two empty seats in the center of the stage were marked Adam Kinzinger and Debbie Halvorson." ...

"All of the candidates expressed their support of the Second Amendment, but Miller said he didn't care for a concealed-carry law." ...

Submitter's Note: I don't care for concealed carry laws myself, unless they are in the style of Alaska and Vermont, but I doubt that is what Darrel meant.

"NC House Majority Leader Hugh Holliman has a dilemma."

"On the one hand, he recently claimed in the 'Davidson County Dispatch' that he supports the Castle Doctrine."

"On the other, he completely refused to exercise leadership in preventing one anti-gun committee chairperson – Rep. Deborah Ross – from bottling it up in committee."

"How can the House Majority Leader, who wields great power, support a bill, yet not use his leadership position to prevent stonewalling tactics by one of the few members of the GA who opposes it?"

"So, Rep. Holliman seems to be talking the talk, but in the last session, he certainly did not walk the walk." ...

"The Raymore City Council voted this week to allow council members to carry a concealed weapon at their meetings, and increase the concealed carry permit rights for everyone in town. But those changes could be short-lived after the mayor promised to veto the ordinance, and a showdown could be looming at City Hall."

"Raymore Mayor Juan Alonzo says that he plans on vetoing the ordinance, which passed by a 5-3 vote earlier this week. ..." ...

"What bothers Alonzo more than allowing concealed weapons into city buildings is that it allows council members to carry weapons inside city buildings, but not citizens." ...

"As predicted earlier in this column, gun prohibitionists are using the murder of a Seattle police officer, and a couple of other slayings, to launch a new effort to ban the sale of semiautomatic firearms in Washington State, and require current owners to register their firearms."

"I forecast this development in a Nov. 3 column that addressed the cowardly slaying of Seattle Officer Timothy Brenton on Halloween as he sat in his patrol car in the Central District with trainee Britt Sweeney, who was able to return fire."

"The irony is that Brenton, as I wrote in a Nov. 10 follow-up, was not killed with a rifle that meets the so-called 'assault weapon' criteria, except that it just happens to be a semi-auto ..." ...

"In response to recent shooting deaths, three state lawmakers say they want to ban the sale of military-style semi-automatic weapons in Washington."

"The lawmakers intend to propose the ban in the state legislative session that begins next month."

"The legislation, called the Aaron Sullivan Public Safety and Police Protection Bill, would prohibit the sale of such weapons to private citizens and require current owners to pass background checks."

"It is named for Aaron Sullivan, 18, who was fatally shot last July in Seattle's Leschi neighborhood, allegedly with an assault-style weapon." ...

"In a three-sentence press release e-mailed to the Verona-Cedar Grove Times last week, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office announced a gun buyback program."

"Today and tomorrow, residents who are in possession of illegal handguns can turn them in and receive up to $200 – no questions asked."

"It's the county's Gun Amnesty Buyback Program, held in high crime areas ..." ...

"Such programs have gained enormous popularity over the years across the country. In some cities thousands of guns make their way off the streets within a day or two."

"A good way to fight crime, one would think."

"But are we sending the wrong message to criminals who want to earn a fast buck with the sale of illegal firearms?" ...

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
You must understand, therefore, that there are two ways of fighting: by law or by force. The first way is natural to men, and the second to beasts. But as the first way often proves inadequate one must have recourse to the second. — Niccolo Machiavelli in "The Prince."
