Despite gun sales declining in 2017 from previous record levels, millions of firearms still fly off the shelves each year, and personal preferences make it difficult to pin down which model is anyone's favorite. It's even harder to determine which offerings are best-sellers, because only Smith & Wesson owner American Outdoor Brands(NASDAQ: AOBC) and Sturm, Ruger(NYSE: RGR) are publicly traded.

Today is the fifth anniversary of an American tragedy, the senseless mass shooting of 26 people, including 20 children, at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, yet with the passage of time the “common sense” that gun control advocates continually demand about gun laws still seems to elude them.
Killer Adam Lanza would not have been stopped by so-called “universal background checks.” He didn’t buy the guns used in the attack; his mother – whom he murdered earlier that morning – bought them under the strict gun laws that existed in Connecticut at the time. |

It is Bill of Rights Day, celebrating this date in 1791 when, according to a history found on Wikipedia, “specific guarantees of personal freedoms and rights, clear limitations on the government’s power in judicial and other proceedings, and explicit declarations that all powers not specifically delegated to Congress by the Constitution are reserved for the states or the people.”
Perhaps the most disputed of these amendments is the Second, which has been defined twice in the past ten years by two Supreme Court rulings – District of Columbia v. Heller and McDonald v. City of Chicago – as protective of an individual right not related to service in a militia. |

There are obvious advantages to small guns. While many people would prefer to carry larger calibers, such as a .45 ACP, it requires a larger gun to handle the extra energy associated with the bigger cartridge. Sure, there are smaller .45-caliber pistols, but there are practical limits on just how compact they can be. When compared to a big-bore personal-defense handgun, a .22 LR, .25 ACP, .32 ACP and even a .380 ACP pistol can be built with more rounds on board in a smaller, more concealable size. |

When it comes to gun violence, what’s so special about Harford County churches? What makes churches in Abingdon or Havre de Grace any more vulnerable to attack than schools or movie theaters or restaurants or concert venues or clubs or mosques or synagogues or college campuses or office buildings or factories or community centers? In gun-nutty America, there’s really no sanctuary. Name a setting and you can probably find a story about a shooting that occurred there. |

At this writing, there have been over 1,500 gun-related homicides in America since the Las Vegas massacre on October 1, 2017 when 58 people were killed and 546 wounded, right on track with the national average of 1,000 gun deaths per month for the last two years. Now that we have your attention, let’s consider the case made by the NRA, its Congressional hired hands, the majority of the Supreme Court, and various right wing pundits who claim the Second Amendment is not simply about state militias but guarantees the unfettered right of everyone to own, carry, trade and eventually shoot someone with a gun.

If you’ve got a pistol permit, chances are you’ll need to recertify soon. Those who received a New York permit before Jan. 15, 2013 have about two months to complete the process, either online or by mail, as part of the mandates set by the New York SAFE Act. As the Jan. 31 recertification deadline looms, Genesee, Wyoming and Orleans county clerks agree that while the recertifications are controversial, pistol holders should be aware of the process.

The Justice Department announced Tuesday that it has begun a federal rule-making process that could reinterpret the legality of certain bump fire stock devices, a piece of equipment that enabled the Las Vegas gunman in October to fire on concertgoers more rapidly, mimicking automatic fire. The announcement comes the day before the acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is set to testify before a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on the device and amid calls from legislators to prevent the future sale of the part.
