"The gun industry promises that a gun in a child's hand is a short-cut to responsibility and maturity. In fact, the only guarantee is one of increased risk of death and injury," states Marty Langley, VPC policy analyst and study author. "The firearms industry and gun lobby are attempting to secure their own survival by endangering that of our children." |

Rick Stanley, Libertarian candidate for U.S. Senate, and Duncan Philp were released from Denver Police custody December 16.
Charged with violating a local gun-control ordinance for openly carrying loaded handguns in a planned act of civil disobedience, they are seeking a jury trial to have the ordinance declared unconstitutional.
Paul Grant, attorney for both men, stated, "There's absolutely no way a judge should be able to uphold Denver's ordinance in light of the state constitution".

Some Americans have responded to the September 11 attacks by purchasing firearms. Ridge was asked about that phenomenon.
"The casual acquisition, the personal acquisition of a firearm I don't think is necessarily going to enhance national security," Ridge said. "It may give an individual or family a greater sense of comfort, but at the end of the day that's not the best antidote to 21st century terrorist attacks."
KABA NOTE: He was certainly careful not to commit to any concrete thoughts or opinions. |

There's one tie that binds the vast majority of the victims: "Almost every one of these people had a criminal record. That's a fact," Detective Carew said. "The bulk of their charges were related to drugs." They are also mostly black, male, and younger than 30.
"The result is a self-perpetuating matriarchal cycle in which women take over households, and young men grow up with very few positive male role models or professional opportunities in their community." |

Nonlethal weapons are now becoming a standard-issue presence in many squad cars as concern grows about the use of "excessive force."
Example: A man ignores the police order to drop his weapon. When it seems the man is going for his gun instead, the officer shoots him with a beanbag. The man suffers only a "large bruise" instead of a bullet hole. |

Rep Melissa Hart (PA) has submitted H.R.3491 to create a massive study of ballistic imaging of bullets test-fired from newly manufactured guns to evaluate the feasability and effectiveness of creating a national database of pattern marks on bullets from gun barrels for use in tracing crime bullets back to particular guns and individuals.
KABA NOTE: Imagine that! Testing technology before implementing it! Of course, as any gunsmith will tell them, the marks left from individual barrels change over time. They could avoid wasting time and money by simply finding out the facts. |
