Guns kill 1,400 Pennsylvanians every year. That's a clear, round statistic, but it's a complicated one, encompassing deaths in our biggest cities, small towns and rural areas. PublicSource has spent the last three weeks taking a closer look at these deaths and what can be done to prevent them. Solutions depend on better understanding. But with gun violence, much of what seems intuitive isn't necessarily true, even with something as simple as identifying who's pulling the trigger. To shine some light and dispel assumptions, here are answers to a few common questions.

A McGrumpy US Marshal wasn’t lovin’ the wait at a Brooklyn McDonald’s — so he whipped out a loaded gun and pointed it at the terrified cashier and customers, cops said Sunday.

Brown then allegedly pulled out his loaded service weapon and pointed it at Diaz before wheeling around and training his gun on terrified customers inside the 86th Street eatery.

As workers frantically dialed 911, Brown’s order came up, and he paid for his food and fled, sources said.

Responding cops canvassed the area and found Brown on the street. He was arrested and hit with a slew of charges, including menacing, harassment and violating firearm license regulations.

The Michigan Court of Appeals has ruled that Ann Arbor Public Schools and the Clio Area School District can ban the possession of guns on school property and at school-sponsored activities.

The separate rulings uphold a lower court decision in the Ann Arbor lawsuit and overturns a lower court ruling in the Clio lawsuit.

The Ann Arbor district was sued last year by Michigan Gun Owners and Ulysses Wong, a district parent who has a concealed pistol license. They objected to policies the district's board of education approved in April 2015.

"We are definitely going to be appealing this" to the Michigan Supreme Court, said Jim Makowski, the attorney for Michigan Gun Owners.

You can argue over which brand of handgun you like, but when it comes to features, there is little room for argument. Most shoppers are looking for a gun that is compact, lightweight, and accurate. And for good reason: People want to arm themselves with handguns that are easily concealable and can fill the role of a personal defense weapon.

It happens every time there's talk of tightening gun legislation: There's a surge in people seeking to use guns. Talk of stricter gun laws came closer to reality this year after state Attorney General Maura Healey issued a notice in July that her office would step up enforcement of the state's assault weapons ban, including a crackdown on the sale of so-called copycat weapons, and Democrat Hillary Clinton, who promised to close gun-sale loopholes, broaden background checks and ban military-style assault weapons, was expected to win the White House.

The 2017 legislative session is still a month away, and state lawmakers have already started pitching their ideas. Among the dozen bills introduced so far is a proposal to make it a felony to steal an American flag. Senate Bill 1009, introduced by Sen. John Kavanagh, R-Fountain Hills, would make such thefts a class 6 felony. It would put American flags in a class that previously had been reserved for guns and animals taken for the purpose of animal fighting. Theft of other items can be elevated to a felony depending on the monetary value.

Georgetown Law Professor David Cole observes in his recently published “Engines of Liberty” that while the Second Amendment was adopted along with the rest of the Bill of Rights in 1791, “it remained a dead letter as a matter of formal constitutional law until 217 years later.” In 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court finally declared for the first time — while striking down a Washington, D.C., law that made it illegal to keep a handgun in one’s home for self defense — that it protects an individual right. The case that breathed life into the Second Amendment was District of Columbia v. Heller.

When Texas passed laws allowing students to carry firearms on campus, provided they are a licensed carrier, concerns arose over student and faculty safety with the potential of more guns being allowed on campus. After one semester with the new laws in place, most of the concerns have been put to rest according to campus officials and law enforcement at West Texas A&M. Campus carry is now being described as a “non-issue” during its first semester.
