The acquittal by a jury of Pierce County, WA Sheriff Ed Troyer of two gross misdemeanor charges stemming from an incident in 2021 in which he was allegedly threatened by a newspaper delivery was really a blow to the office of state Attorney General Bob Ferguson, say critics of the prosecution.
It was Ferguson’s office which prosecuted the case, as noted by the Tacoma News Tribune.

A Circuit Court judge in Harney County, Oregon has granted a preliminary injunction in the ongoing challenge of Measure 114 by Gun Owners of America, the Gun Owners Foundation and two private citizens.
The injunction specifically targets the magazine ban portion of the measure until a full trial can be held. This could put off the imposition of the ban for weeks, if not months.

The Guardian pointed to research on Friday which claims the climate crisis may explain increased gun violence. “Almost 8,000 shootings in US cities in recent years were attributable to unseasonably warm temperatures, according to a new study. The researchers said the work suggested the climate crisis could be contributing to increased gun violence by pushing temperatures beyond the normal ranges,” according to the report.

When proposing the Fourteenth Amendment to Congress in 1866, Senator Jacob Howard referred to “the personal rights guaranteed and secured by the first eight amendments of the Constitution; such as freedom of speech and of the press; … the right to keep and bear arms….” He averred that “the great object” of the amendment was “to restrain the power of the States and compel them at all times to respect these great fundamental guarantees.” The design was not to change the nature of the rights, but to prevent the states from violating them.
