The Columbus Dispatch ran an editorial on Thanksgiving that bashed the GOP controlled Senate for considering and likely passing CCW legislation next week. While there are still serious concerns with the legislation, the Columbus Dispatch has resorted to lying about HB274.

In order to dispute the "support" of the Buckeye Sheriffs (the only ELECTED law enforcement in Ohio) the paper has accused them of profiting from the process. See the link for details & story.

"Within the United States, rural areas have higher rates of gun ownership and lower rates of murder; whites have higher rates of gun ownership than blacks and much lower murder rates. For the country as a whole, handgun ownership doubled in the late 20th century, while the murder rate went down. But such facts are not mentioned by gun-control zealots or by the liberal media."

And when Hitler attacked the unions and the industrialists, I was not a member of the unions and I was not concerned. With two weeks worth of legislative sessions remaining this year, lawmakers hope to reach a compromise on legislation that would allow Ohioans to carry concealed handguns, while satisfying law enforcement officials' concerns and avoiding the veto of Gov. Bob Taft, according to officials.

The amendments will try to bridge the gap between the bill's current supporters, including members of the gun lobby & Ohio sheriffs, and its opponents, who include Gov. Taft and the FOP police union.

UK: England has worst crime rate in the world

More from the "ban guns, more crime" file...
-------
"England and Wales have the highest crime rate among the world's leading economies, according to a new report by the United Nations.

"The survey, which is likely to prove embarrassing to David Blunkett, the Home Secretary, shows that people are more likely to be mugged, burgled, robbed or assaulted here than in America, Germany, Russia, South Africa or any other of the world's 20 largest nations. Only the Dominican Republic, New Zealand and Finland have higher crime rates than England and Wales.

"According to the comparison of international crime statistics produced by the UN's Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention, England and Wales had 9,766 crimes for every 100,000 people in the year 2000. America had 8,517, South Africa 7,997, Germany 7,621 and Russia 2,022.

"During the period 1998-2000, Britain went from fifth to fourth worst in the world league table. An analysis of total recorded crime figures before 1998 also suggests that England and Wales have moved sharply up the league table since Labour came to power in 1997. Crimes fell from 5.5 million in 1993 to 4.5 million in 1997. By 1999, total crimes had risen again to 5.3 million." ...

"The UN reports also shows that England and Wales are the second-worst places in the world for assaults, with 851 people assaulted per 100,000, and seventh for burglaries and car theft, with 1,579 burglaries per 100,000 population." ...

"For five years, Oliverio Martinez has been blind and paralyzed as the result of a police shooting. Now he is at the center of a U.S. Supreme Court case that could determine whether decades of restraints on police interrogations should be discarded.

"The blanket requirement for a Miranda warning ...could end up in the rubbish bin of legal history if the court concludes police were justified in aggressively questioning the gravely wounded Martinez while he screamed in agony." ...

"The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with a federal judge that the confession was coerced and cannot be used as evidence against Martinez in his excessive-force civil case against the city. It said Chavez should have known that questioning a man who had been shot five times, was crying out for treatment and had been given no Miranda warning was a violation of his constitutional rights."

"For example, under authority it already has or is asserting in court cases, the administration, with approval of the special Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, could order a clandestine search of a U.S. citizen's home and, based on the information gathered, secretly declare the citizen an enemy combatant, to be held indefinitely at a U.S. military base. Courts would have very limited authority to second-guess the detention, to the extent that they were aware of it." ...

"33,000 adults die each year from gunshot wounds"

In this letter to the editor, an anti-gunner misrepresents reality while parroting VPC's deceptions almost verbatim.

EXCERPT:
According to the book, "Guns and Violence," there are about 223 million guns in this country, and more than 5,000 juveniles and 33,000 adults die each year from gunshot wounds. The recent former surgeon general alluded to the fact that "gun violence is a leading public health issue."
REALITY:
In the year 2000, the last year where full stats are published by the CDC, the actual reported total number of firearms-related deaths is exactly 28,663. That's still a high number, but lying to such an extreme by exaggerating by over 4,300 deaths isn't very honest. Furthermore, of the 28,663 deaths, the largest percentage (57.%) of them were by choice -- suicides -- and 37.7% of them were homicides, including justifiable homicides and gang warfare over illicit drug trade. The murders aren't legal, but criminals do not obey laws -- and people need to be able to protect themselves from people who disobey the ban on criminal homicide. According to the CDC report for the year 2000, linked in the text above,

"The other components—firearm accidents, firearm injuries of undetermined intent, and legal intervention involving firearms—accounted for 2.7, 0.8, and 0.9 percent, respectively."

-------
"A retired man I know who lives in a village was recently awoken by the noise of his front door being smashed in. He got up, was confronted by four aggressive burglars and pressed the panic button on his alarm."

"A very bright light was shone on him and he was threatened. When he tried to go downstairs he was sprayed with something that hurt his eyes. The burglars continued removing his furniture, safe in the knowledge that they would not be harmed."

"The police were prompt, but too late. The scenes of crime people took two days to appear. They had had 15 other break-ins to attend, mostly commercial properties, which, it seems, take priority over crimes in which people are threatened or attacked in their homes."

"A neighbour of mine was similarly attacked, only this time it was broken bottles rather than spray and it took the police two hours to arrive from a town 30 miles distant. Another couple had their dogs sprayed and were forced back to their bedroom while the thugs completed their work."

"These people live in the Home Counties, not the Wild West, and their cases are not exceptional. Thieves know how vulnerable country properties are, and how thinly policed are whole swathes of our countryside. The police say, with reason, that they are over-stretched just keeping the lids on the towns and can't spare more than a token presence outside them."

"But if the police can't protect us, who can? Only ourselves. There's no one else." ...

But, naturally, they are demonizing the concept...
-------
"Ministers and airlines last night gave a wary response to confirmation that the Wheeler report on airline security suggested that armed police might be deployed to travel as "sky marshals" to protect British flights from the threat of terrorist hijacking."

"Home Office officials confirmed that the former Tory minister, Sir John Wheeler, has included the option in a review now being studied by ministers."

" 'Whilst it is an option, no decision has been taken on it yet,' a spokesman said."

"But the fact that no hijack has taken place since the disasters of September 11 and the latest threat to aircraft - the surface-to-air missile unsuccessfully launched against an Israeli charter plane above Kenya last week - both reflect the questionable value of such a costly and hazardous policy." ...

"Not many corporate CEOs use M-16s, bits of airplane wreckage and fat, juicy steaks to test their products. For American Ammunition's Andrés Fernández, those are key research and development tools."

" 'We're a family of bullet makers,' Fernández says, laughing, as a cloud of acrid gun smoke billows from an M-16 burst in his product-testing facility -- a shooting range, of course."

" 'Some guys like cars,' he adds. 'I'm into this.' " ...

"It is also taking aim at new markets -- exporting and producing overseas -- as well as selling its own patented projectile, dubbed the Air Defense Round and designed to penetrate a human body but not an aircraft fuselage." ...

" Rabbi Eric Yoffie of the 501(c)(3) tax-exempt Union of American Hebrew Congregations (http://www.uahc.org/yoffie/mmm.html) said the following at the Million Mom March in May 2000.
"The indiscriminate distribution of guns is an offense against God and humanity." "Controlling guns is not only a political matter, it is a solemn religious obligation. Our gun-flooded society has turned weapons into idols, and the worship of idols must be recognized for what it is-blasphemy. And the only appropriate religious response to blasphemy is sustained moral outrage." The 501(c)(3) tax-exempt American Jewish Congress also is running an anti-gun crusade at http://ajcongress.org/ptchoice.htm."

Scotland: Aristocrat loses his gun over TV threat

A SCOTTISH aristocrat who is leading a high-profile campaign against the legal profession in Scotland has had his shotgun licence revoked by police after making threatening comments against lawyers during a television documentary.

Stuart Usher’s personal dispute with the Edinburgh-based law firm Brodies was the subject of a recent Cutting Edge documentary on Channel 4. During the programme, Mr Usher said he sometimes felt like borrowing a gun and going to Edinburgh "to nail a few lawyers".

Mr Usher was visited at his home near Jedburgh in September by two officers from the Lothian and Borders force. They told him that a complaint had been made as a result of the comments he had made in front of the cameras. An inquiry was being conducted into the matter, but in the meantime he was asked to hand over his weapon and licence.

Now, in a letter to Mr Usher, Ian Dickinson, the assistant chief constable of Lothian and Borders Police, said: "In view of the circumstances surrounding your continuing legal dispute, and your actions concerning this matter, I am not satisfied that you can be permitted to possess a Shot Gun [sic] without danger to the public safety or to the peace.

"I the undersigned, being duly authorised by the Chief Officer of Police for Lothian and Borders, therefore revoke your Shot Gun certificate..."

"The 14-year-old had been sitting in class beside his fellow students all morning. No one knew he had a semiautomatic handgun stuffed in his waistband."

"Tipped off by a grandmother who noticed that the gun was missing, school officials rushed to the boy's classroom, took the weapon, removed him to the hall and police later arrested him."

"The student was charged with a misdemeanor of not having a weapons permit."

"The teenager brought a gun onto school grounds -- a crime that warrants a felony charge in 24 states and a misdemeanor in another 22."

"But, under Alabama Code, the single fact that an unauthorized person has a gun on school grounds isn't enough to merit a criminal offense."

"The reason is found in one six-word phrase: 'with intent to do bodily harm.' " ...

CONSIDER...

Criminal Intent was once a bedrock of legal protection, but it's been consistently and repeatedly eroded over the history of the U.S. Because criminal intent is not usually an issue as relates to the possession of banned firearms or the bearing of firearms in defiance of unConstitutional prohibitions, many gun owners now sit in jails and prisons -- even though they had absolutely no intention of harming anyone, ever.

We consider them political prisoners and believe that if President Bush were the patriot he promoted himself to be, rather than talking about "amnesty" for lawbreaking illegal aliens, he'd be talking about amnesty for imprisoned citizens whose only "crime" involved exercising their basic rights.

"BAE Systems is poised to sell Heckler & Koch, its German handgun and rifle maker. The sale is awaiting formal approval from the US and UK defence ministries, both of which are Heckler & Koch customers."

"The purchaser is a German investor group headed by Umarex, which owns CarlWalther, maker of the legendary Walther PKK handgun favoured by James Bond."

"Heckler & Koch makes the G36 rifle used by the German, Spanish and British armies. It also supplies special forces such as the SAS and its German equivalent, GSG-9, with handguns and machine guns."

"The British army accounts for around one-fifth of Heckler & Koch's sales."

"Based in south-west Germany and employing around 500 people, Heckler & Koch is believed to have sales of some £90m. While the company might fetch a similar amount, BAE Systems has had some difficulty finding a buyer. A sale to US gun- maker Colt fell through." ...

Domestic violence gun law can affect soldiers careers

"A 1996 federal law can jeopardize a soldier's career and inhibit him from fighting in the War on Terrorism if he is convicted of a domestic-violence offense."

"Because of an unprecedented number of domestic violence-related homicides at Fort Bragg, N.C., this summer, the Lautenberg Amendment, a law preventing domestic offenders from owning or possessing firearms, has become more of an issue affecting soldiers than ever before, an Army attorney said."

"The amendment made it a felony in September 1996 for individuals convicted of misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence to ship, transport, possess, or receive firearms or ammunition. [Surprisingly,] Government agencies, including the Department of the Army, are not exempt from the Lautenberg Amendment, said Capt. Heather Fagan, an attorney with the XVIII Airborne Corps Staff Judge Advocate's Office." ...

CONSIDER...

People have been convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence for shoving a spouse -- even when that spouse did not press charges. While no sane person condones unprovoked violence against any innocent person, does a shove truly warrant being stripped of your rights for life?

Some laws are used abusively. This one is one of them.
