The city paid $4.1 million to the victim's family and McCarthy said the officer, who had recently shot two other people, should not have been on the street given his history.

In the wake of the recent mass shooting at a Colorado Planned Parenthood that claimed three lives, President Barack Obama called the incidents of gun violence in America “not normal.” “Enough is enough,” Obama said. According to one count, there have been 351, mass shootings in the United States in 2015. The frequency of these shootings have led many to call to new approaches to guns and violence in America. In a Nov. 5 national survey, for instance, 52 percent of respondents said the support “stricter gun laws.” (The number who said they supported “gun control” was smaller.) |

Spike Lee’s production company, 40 Acres and a Mule, is named after a particularly shameful episode in American history. Back in 1865, after a closed-door meeting with black ministers in Savannah, Georgia, Union Army General William Sherman confiscated some 400,000 acres of land along the Southern Atlantic Coast. He then divided it into 40-acre parcels to distribute—along with mules—to the thousands of freed slave families, now refugees, who’d joined the general on his famous March to the Sea. |

I stayed glued to the TV news accounts of the fatal shootings at the Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado last Friday, except to re-read an email that recently arrived in my inbox.
It was a fundraising letter from Dudley Brown, president of the Virginia-based National Association for Gun Rights (NAGR), asking me to renew my membership. Which is strange, because as a gun-control advocate I certainly don’t belong to the organization and I’ve never given it a dime. I guess they just flood thousands of strangers with emails with the hope of landing new members and more cash. |
