The sheriff suffered an injury to his hand while he was cleaning a gun at his home in Des Moines County, Iowa.

Sheriff Mike Johnstone sustained a gunshot wound to his left hand as he cleaned his personal handgun, at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 16, 2015, according to a statement from the Des Moines County Sheriffs Office.

Im not sure who first came up with the idea, but theres an old saying that continues to define the unending chronology of shootings that all too regularly lead the stories on the six oclock news. Violence is as American as cherry pie, it goes, and several variations invoking apple pie and baseball go even further in placing guns and domestic violence, street crime, school shootings and terrorism squarely at the center of the national experience.
