"Garrett Bracy makes a powerful case for a waiting period and better screening for people buying guns."

"Under the law, Wal-Mart probably wasn't negligent, but juries are known for going against big companies. If Mrs. Bracy were to win her suit, others will follow and eventually stores such as Wal-Mart and even small gun dealers will independently adopt stronger screening measures or firearm sales will become a liability they no longer wish to accept."

"Only a small number of people are going to buy a gun to commit suicide, and only a relatively small number are going to buy a gun for the purpose of murder or robbery."

"But those people add up to a small army, none of whom need to be gun owners."

"Before my son Ariel, z”l, passed away a year and a half ago, he and I spent a great deal of time discussing the Second Amendment, the right to bear arms. Ariel was always amazed at how many Jews — shomer Shabbos Jews — aligned themselves with the advocates of gun control, in reality a movement to banish the private ownership of guns by lawful citizens." ...

"During the Los Angeles riots of 1992, my wife Karen and I, along with Ariel and our daughter Leda, were inside a film theater. Abruptly, an angry mob congregated outside; soon they were trying to break down the doors. Trapped inside, we were all terrified. I held Leda in my arms; she shivered like a frightened rabbit. Karen held Ariel's hand."

" 'Don't worry,' I said with false confidence, 'the police will be here soon.' "

"But the police did not arrive that night, nor did they protect the city from arson and widespread looting. ..." ...

"A few days later, I bought a gun."

"I was one of those mothers who forbade her son to play with toy guns. This did not stop the gunplay. He fashioned guns out of Legos, twigs, Play- Doh, bologna sandwich crusts. I eventually admitted defeat, opening the door to an arsenal of Super-Soakers, cap pistols and Nerf dart shooters." ...

"Many would agree with me that, on balance, the world would be better off if the gun had never been invented. (I know many would disagree, too, and I expect an onslaught of e-mails telling me so.)"

"Having said all this, the proposal to ban the possession of handguns in San Francisco is the kind of impractical, under-researched, righteous gesture common to college sophomores and San Francisco supervisors."
