"To put it in terms appropriate to the issue, Americans have been shooting blindly in the gun control/gun rights debate."
"And their own government, which blocks collection or access to crucial data on firearms at the behest of gun-rights advocates, tied the blindfold in place. The National Research Council, an arm of the National Academy of Sciences, revealed the nation's uncertain marksmanship in a study last week. Washington declines to collect gun ownership statistics and bars researchers' access to Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms data on guns traced to crimes. ..." |

This year's presidential contest highlighted the flaws in the system, she said. President Bush and Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry spent the vast majority of their time campaigning in a handful of states." ... |

"Gun control advocates say the ban on .50-caliber BMG rifles makes California a national leader in improving public safety. Opponents to the new law countered that there was no proof, as the bill's supporters claimed, that the guns represented a 'terrorist threat' or had ever been used in a crime in California."

It always amazes me that people believe more laws will stop criminal activity. It is illegal to steal or murder. It doesn't make any sense to add other laws on top of that, which will ultimately be broken when the robbery or murder law is broken. Unfortunately, some lawmakers are too thick-skulled for this obvious logic to penetrate.
A gun is a tool. Like a knife, a chainsaw, a hammer, or a car. Each has great utility and performs a multitude of beneficial tasks. And each can be abused to criminal ends by a very small group. So should we take away anything that could possibly be used in a criminal way? The list would never end.

It is certainly a sad state of affairs when the insanity of the masses cannot and do not attempt to see through the veil of the "blue smoke and mirrors" to realize that the purpose of the gun control 'advocates' is to obtain control of those masses.
History has shown, Hitler and Stalin, among others, that the only way to gain full control of the masses is to remove all individual means to resist that control.
The unpublished statistics of gun ownership, or even possession, whereby crimes were prevented or resisted was/is when the individual has the means to defend himself in lieu of the 2nd Amendment's inalienable right to bear arms.
