Here are my picks for the Top 10 gun-related stories of the year, ranked in no particular order.
Some are national in scope, while others hit a little closer to home.
• Right before the year began we witnessed the death of Gen. Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov, inventor of the legendary AK-47. Today, an estimated 100 million AKs have been produced, including several semi-auto variants in my gun safe. |

The hot new trend in Christmas gifts for women? Guns, the Washington Post reports. Gun store owners say more and more husbands are giving their wives firearms, and the Post points to a few specific examples, like the woman whose husband had an AR-15 specially designed for her, using lighter materials so it would be easier for her to handle. And female-oriented guns and accessories are on the rise—think bra holsters, guns designed so they're easier for women to shoot, colored guns, and even guns customized with a Hello Kitty theme. |

But Gallagher’s shock quickly gave way to endearment: Her husband told her he built the semiautomatic rifle especially for her, with lighter materials to make it easier for her to fire. Her spirits were made bright.
Giving your wife a high-powered rifle for Christmas might seem in conflict with two turtle doves and peace on Earth, not to mention making the gun-control crowd shudder. But gun store owners and firearm instructors say gun-happy husbands are increasingly leaving weaponry under the tree for their beloveds — rifles, handguns, ammo, pretty much anything that makes a loud pop. |

Events where you can take your photo with Santa Claus are all over the place during the holiday season. Events where you can get your photo taken with Santa while holding your choice of an AK-47, AR-15 or M6 IC? Those are pretty rare.
More than 75 people of all ages came out to the Sandy Springs Gun Range and Club to pose with Santa while holding a weapon. The gun range was accepting donations of cash or non-perishable food items in exchange for having their picture taken. They even received a free magnet with their photo on it. |

Our founding documents are written to encourage a weak government - right down to the very controversial 2nd Amendment. On the right, the 2nd Amendment is referenced as a just tool to prevent tyranny. Support of the 2nd Amendment is ultimately a statement in support of the people over the government, and with the police officers as the front line of government's show of force, it places the police notably in opposition to anyone who sees the 2nd Amendment as protection from government and not just for home-defense or hunting. |

The open carry movement existed in Texas before C.J. Grisham was set upon by a Temple police officer in rural Bell County. Grisham was eventually convicted of “interfering with police duties” after a second jury trial. He paid a $2,000 fine. Many who have watched the video of the event think the police officer is the one who should have been reprimanded. The video went viral, and Grisham’s zeal for open carry has blossomed into thousands of armed Texans marching to demand their second amendment rights. |

With record-numbers of new concealed carry license holders and new gun owners finally exercising their second amendment right, many feel lost trying to improve their shooting skills. New shooters who have at least achieved basic competency and safe gun-handling skills should seek out professional trainers from reputable schools to improve their abilities. In the mean time, here are three tips to get the average shooter well on their way to becoming the next Jerry Miculek.

The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals has struck down a federal law barring anyone who has ever been committed to a mental hospital from owning a gun.
The case arose after Clifford Tyler of Michigan challenged the prohibition, claiming it was unfair for the government to keep him from buying a firearm just because he spent less than a month in a mental institution 28 years ago.
Tyler was committed briefly in the 1980s following the dissolution of his marriage. A recent psychiatric evaluation found that he had had what “appeared to be a brief reactive depressive episode in response to his wife divorcing him,” and that he now has no sign of mental illness. He has since remarried and not suffered from depression. |

When I first read about this, I thought that it had to be some kind of weird spoof. But it's not.
Over the course of almost two excruciatingly tedious minutes complete with ominous piano-dominated background music, a recently created video intended to become a public service announcement (PSA) shows a teenage boy taking a gun out of a drawer in his parents' bedroom and bringing it to school. At the end of a class period, he puts it on the desk of his shocked teacher and asks her, "Can you take this away? I don’t feel safe with a gun in my house."

Colorado was the first state to legalize recreational marijuana sales. Now the state's voters may consider a ballot measure to allow pot smokers to carry a concealed firearm.
The "Colorado Campaign for Equal Gun Rights" is working to put a question on the November 2016 ballot to have Colorado ignore guidelines from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives about firearms and pot.
The measure would change state law to prevent sheriffs from denying concealed carry permits because of marijuana use. It's a new frontier in the marijuana wars, and one that has divided gun-rights activists.

As the nation woke up this morning to news of yet another shooting involving a white police officer and a black suspect in a St. Louis suburb, one might be compelled to wonder on this Christmas Eve whatever happened to “peace on earth, good will toward men?”
Peace and good will seem in short supply in some places today as authorities in Berkley, Mo., continue their investigation of last night’s fatal shooting. According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, the deceased gunman’s 9mm pistol “had five rounds in the magazine and one round in the chamber.” The serial number had reportedly been filed off. |

More than 500 guns are sold every day in the United States, with some believing a weapon is the perfect holiday gift.
A background check is run on the purchaser, and this year, the FBI reported an all-time record rate for Black Friday - with 175,00 attempted checks in a single day. The FBI warned that so many guns are being purchased, they cannot keep up, so criminals are slipping through the system. |

I’ve been a good guy this year and I only want three things. Remember how last year I wrote you for an Heckler & Koch MP5 and you didn’t deliver? I don’t blame you anymore. You knew something I didn’t. You knew about SIG’s MPX. Thanks to your foresight, I don’t have to find a buyer for a dozen heavily-used magazines and one well-loved semi-auto sub-gun. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
For, in principle, there is no difference between a law prohibiting the wearing of concealed arms, and a law forbidding the wearing such as are exposed; and if the former be unconstitutional, the latter must be so likewise. But it should not be forgotten, that it is not only a part of the right that is secured by the constitution; it is the right entire and complete, as it existed at the adoption of the constitution; and if any portion of that right be impaired, immaterial how small the part may be, and immaterial the order of time at which it be done, it is equally forbidden by the constitution. [Bliss vs. Commonwealth, 12 Ky. (2 Litt.) 90, at 92, and 93, 13 Am. Dec. 251 (1822) |
