A Blackman Township man fired at least four times on Friday night at what he said was an intruder armed with a knife, police said. He left the house on Winifred Street with the homeowner's gun and pickup truck, and officers were searching for the vehicle, Blackman-Leoni Township public safety Deputy Director Christopher Boulter said about 11 p.m. Dec. 23.
Whether the man was hit by the gunfire was not clear. Boulter did not initially see any evidence he had been shot. Police had not received any hospital reports about a shooting victim.
The two struggled and the homeowner went by Jackson Community Ambulance to Henry Ford Allegiance Health with what Boulter said were facial injuries.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced on December 19 that it had “finalized” its rules regarding who will have their names added to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). This was after the proposed rules published in April received more than 90,000 responses, mostly negative, from the public. The National Rifle Association (NRA) opposed the proposed rules for numerous reasons and urged its members to protest them. |

Illinois' concealed carry law doesn't allow patrons to bring firearms into a bar or restaurant that predominantly sells alcohol, but those restrictions don't apply on a party bus, where passengers provide their own booze. A Chicago ordinance approved in September requires party bus drivers to call police if patrons throw a beer bottle out the window or smoke marijuana. But a string of six shootings with injuries in 14 months involving party buses pointed to a gray area in the rules, the Chicago Tribune reported. |

Quite a few years ago, I used to shoot like a cowboy. Well, not a real cowboy. I was involved in cowboy action shooting. This style of shooting was sponsored nationally by the Single Action Shooting Society. SASS was group of men and women who loved shooting old western-style firearms and formed a club to compete using single-action revolvers, lever guns and exposed-hammer shotguns. I was a member of SASS for a few years as member No. 26,452. They even give you a badge like deputies wore in the 19th century. I was also badge No. 25 with the Lincoln County Lawmen, a local affiliate of SASS. To add to the fun, part of the rules were you had to dress like a cowboy.

Since last month's election, it seems that gun sales have been on the rise. One indicator is that FBI background checks for gun purchases shot up to their highest level in two years on Black Friday, according to the gun control news site The Trace. And another group has been reporting a recent rise in the number of people interested in guns, The Liberal Gun Club. That's an organization for left-leaning gun lovers. It has nine chapters and members in all 50 states. |

The Rev. Michael Pfleger has turned to the cross. Almost 800 crosses, actually, marching down Chicago’s North Michigan Avenue. White, wooden crosses, etched with the names of the dead, the murder victims of 2016. Crosses borne by loved ones left behind, neighbors, friends and anyone else who cares. “The violence is driving me out of my mind,” Pfleger said over the phone. Last week, I called Pfleger, the pastor of St. Sabina Catholic Church and crusader against guns and mayhem. His voice was plaintive, tinged with desperation.
