The defining feature of the Springfield Armory XD-E is highlighted above, the DA/SA hammer-fired system that signals a return to an action often overshadowed by modern striker-fired defensive pistols. There was a time, back in the 1970s and ’80s, when giants strode the earth of the desert Southwest. At the time, semi-automatic handguns came mostly in two flavors: Single-action pistols—which were endorsed and carried by these giants—and pistols that were double-action on the first shot and single-action on subsequent shots, which were derided by the giants as “crunchentickers." |

The Michigan Supreme Court next year will hear oral arguments in two cases testing whether public school districts can ban guns — including openly carried ones — despite a state law that generally limits local firearms rules.
Lawsuits filed by gun-rights groups have broad implications for school districts around the state but challenge specific policies enacted by Ann Arbor Public Schools and the Clio Area School District, whose officials say their rules are designed to protect students and avoid disruptions.
Ann Arbor banned all guns on school property and school-sponsored activities in 2015 after a resident openly carried a sidearm into a high school choir concert. |

As a gun violence prevention activist, it never ceases to amaze me how little the United States Congress has been able to accomplish over the years to protect the public from gun-related tragedies. Since the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, which took place just under five years ago, , and there have been . Despite a proliferation of, and easy access to, firearms in the United States, the chance of an American being murdered by a gun is a whopping 25 times higher than in any other developed country. Every day, on average, another 93 lives are lost to gun violence in the United States. It is a public health and safety crisis by every possible standard. |

The Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission may create a new permit area in Hunting District 103 southeast of Libby. The proposal, which comes from a citizens’ initiative, would require hunters to draw a permit before shooting a mule deer in the area. Neil Anderson, Fish, Wildlife, and Parks’s Wildlife Program Manager, expected it to make five to 15 permits available per year.

The police chief of Ohio's capital and biggest city is calling for both peace and action as Columbus faces a near-record high number of homicides. Police have tallied 138 killings this year, just shy of the record of 139 in 1991. One victim died from injuries from a 2014 shooting. Columbus Police Chief Kim Jacobs says police alone can't solve the problem and community involvement is necessary to bring the numbers down. |

Deer lay siege to Andy Pico’s wife’s garden so often — eating her flowers — that the city councilman has named them. “I call them The Venisons,” Pico said with a laugh. But the issue is no laughing matter, he said. Colorado Springs’ urban deer population is said to be dangerously high, and the council is considering options to reduce it. About 20 deer live in every square mile of southwest Colorado Springs, said Bill Vogrin, spokesman for Colorado Parks and Wildlife. |
