"'I want to make America safer, and safer for our children,' he opportunistically declared a month after Newtown, when he called for 'renewing a national ban on assault weapons as part of the healing process.' Who he thought would be healed by a betrayal offensive to millions of gun owners was left unstated. Also unclear is if he had in mind a carve-out for former FBI agents, the same way federal law exempts them from concealed firearm prohibitions.'" |

"It makes sense, if you think about it, to not offend people in their own home, and to be sensitive to customs and mores that may be unfamiliar or alien to us but are natural and simply good manners to the culture in which we place ourselves. If we find we cannot abide by such customs, unless part of a compelled government presence, in which case prudence should preside, no one is forcing us to go there." |

Today, on Christmas Eve, the UN’s Arms Trade Treaty takes effect, giving Americans a lump of coal in their stockings this holiday season. The ATT is a bad idea that keeps getting worse. In theory, it’s about stopping the sale of guns to terrorists and mass murderers. But in practice, it’s about preventing Israel from defending itself, allowing left-wing activists to dictate U.S. foreign policy and giving anti-gun advocates a leg up. The treaty takes effect 90 days after it’s ratified by 50 nations. That happened on Sept. 25, so the ATT enters into force on Christmas Eve. That’s not likely to be a coincidence: Treaty advocates pretend the ATT is a present of peace to the world, so the timing suits their propaganda perfectly |

They promised us peace if we would accept a little regulation. We barely paid attention, but we said “Sure, that sounds good. Where do I sign?” The latest promise was that armed assault would stop in Washington State if we only had “universal firearms background checks”. Unless you’re a stupid Washington voter, it shouldn’t surprise you that armed robbery didn’t stop. Crime continued as if the new law didn’t exist. |

It’s a growing trend. Gun shop owners in the Ozarks say they’re seeing more female customers. They say some are shooting for recreational purposes, but most women are purchasing handguns for self-defense.
“Shooting has grown largely for women. It’s up 42% since 2006,” says Elite Arms Company Owner Myron Bahm.
“This year, specifically, we’ve seen more and more ladies come in by themselves, looking for things or looking for accessories,” says Cherokee Firearms Owner Nick Newman. |

While millions of Californians were preparing to celebrate the holiday season, attorneys for the Firearms Policy Coalition were busy filing an amici curiae brief to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in the matter of Peruta v. San Diego, a lawsuit challenging the discretionary “may issue” handgun carry permit policies of San Diego Sheriff William Gore.
Bradley Benbrook and Stephen Duvernay of the Sacramento-based Benbrook Law Group penned the “friends of the court” brief on behalf of a diverse coalition of eleven Second Amendment civil rights organizations and eleven individuals who are parties to ‘right-to-carry’ lawsuits within the Ninth Circuit. |

By some estimates there are over 11 million people who have concealed carry permits in the US. That is several times larger than the entire US military and it does not include people who live in “Constitutional Carry” states where a permit is not required. But notice I am counting people who have permits, not people who carry on a daily basis. That number I suspect is significantly smaller; likely less than half. |

But sometimes self-defense law contains substantial gaps (perhaps unintended by the legislature). One such gap is that many state penal codes — including, apparently, in Washington — expressly provide for self-defense only against people and not against animals. And in State v. Hull, the prosecution actually argued that “Self-defense is a defense to the use of force against a person, not an animal,” so Hull “was not entitled to a self-defense instruction.” |

9. ‘My Parents Open Carry: A Children’s Book.’ This summer, a new book, My Parents Open Carry hit store shelves. Authors Brian Jeffs and Nathan Nephew say they drew their inspiration for the creepy illustrated tome when they noticed that there were no other pro-gun children’s books. “Our goal was to provide a wholesome family book that reflects the views of the majority of the American people, i.e., that self-defense is a basic natural right and that firearms provide the most efficient means for that defense.” |

A Colorado group is hoping marijuana users could be able to carry concealed firearms, should a measure its backing make it in front of voters on the November 2016 ballot.
The Colorado Campaign for Equal Gun Rights, operating under the Guns for Everyone group, wants to put the question before the state’s voters and effectively subvert federal law which restricts possession of weed and guns, The Associated Press reported.
The state already violated federal law when it became among the first states to pass recreational marijuana statutes last year. |

Several days after I first opened Tom Diaz' powerful - and absolutely horrifying - book, The Last Gun, a tiny news item caught my eye. The account reported the death of Tulsa, Oklahoma, resident Christa Engels, who had been shot to death by her 3-year-old son. The toddler had apparently discovered the weapon underneath a couch.
It's a sad, but not particularly uncommon, story. In fact, Diaz reports that during the last decade, more than 30,000 US residents a year have died because of guns. "Every year," he notes, "more Americans are killed by guns than people of all nationalities are killed worldwide by terrorist attacks." |

When Austria's Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss abolished the country's legislature and established an authoritarian right-wing government, he didn't use an Austrian army to crush his left-wing political opponents. He did it with a militia of his own armed supporters.
Could that be possible here? Already, plenty of Americans are asserting the right to carry guns in previously unlikely places (such as in schools and government offices). Already, they are forming private militias for purposes such as patrolling the Mexican border and protecting a claimed right to graze cattle on federal lands. |

The day after Christmas is traditionally a very busy one for gun ranges. Folks are often testing new firearms for the first time.
At the Athena Gun Club on I-10 West and the Sam Houston Tollway, the wait was an hour long before getting a chance to shoot. Nineteen-year-old Wes Artac was surprised, but patient and ready when his pager buzzed, signally their turn to head to the range. |

If you do the research, you find certain words and facts were left out of Mr. Riegle’s letter in order to favor his opinions. The 8 percent increase in homicides for states that passed the law for Stand Your Ground refers to Florida only. The word justified was left out and should actually read an 8 percent increase in justified homicide. The state of Florida has the highest number of Carry Conceal permit holders in the nation. Out of all of those permits, there were only 133 cases filed in Florida using the Stand Your Ground law. Of those cases, 73 were ruled justified (55 percent), 39 of those were ruled unjustified and the defendant was ruled adjudicated guilty. |

Will the new Congress stay the course?
D.C. v. Heller Gun Case Was Tip of Iceberg. Your individual right to arms is recognized, protected.
The landmark Supreme Court gun case, District of Columbia v. Heller, (554 U.S. 570), continues to set the gold standard for the human and civil right to keep and bear arms, even if lower courts and some government “officials” who hate and fear guns struggle to argue their way around it. The more people who know about all we won in this case, the stronger our rights will be. |

The National Rifle Association lately has been having its way with the Florida In case the NRA is running out of things to ask for, here's a new doctrine: Bear Arms Against Drones. The doctrine is simple. It would enshrine in law the right of people whose property or personal space is invaded by drones to shoot the things down. Here's the argument for it:
We're in the midst of a drone invasion. Some of the snooping, dangerous craft will be operated by individuals and businesses. Some will be operated by crooks. Some will be operated by terrorists. In all cases, individuals should have the right to protect themselves. |

A federal court ruling upholding gun rights for people who had a past mental illness is being closely watched as a potential Supreme Court test case.
Last week, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit ruled in Tyler v. Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Department that a “strict scrutiny” test should be applied to a gun ownership case, potentially invalidating a federal law that restricts gun ownership by someone “adjudicated as a mental defective or who has been committed to a mental institution”

Newsmax is today running what it says is an “urgent poll” to learn whether Americans support or oppose “President Obama’s plans for stricter gun controls,” while this column wants readers to answer a couple of other questions.
To get the results, one must take the poll. Naturally, this requires submitting an e-mail address, confirming it and then confirming your vote. So far, the results are heavily tilted against new gun controls, and there are two significant results one might not expect. David Codrea doesn't care for Newsmax polls.
First, the majority of respondents (65 percent at this writing) claim to not be members of the National Rifle Association. Also, a majority (55 percent) say they are not veterans of the armed forces. |
