Like many American ammunition innovators, Fred Barnes began his business looking for a better way to do things. To that end, he started making ammunition in his basement in Bayfield, Colorado. He sold the company to Burford Corporation, which was based in Mayfield, Oklahoma. They then sold the company, which relocated once again to Montrose, Colorado, a bit of a homecoming for Barnes (which was eventually renamed Colorado Custom Bulles). The company expanded to more than 100 employees by the 1940s, but lost its momentum through the 60s, and shrank to only two employees.

History of 40 Cal (S&W) Ammo

The .40 S&W cartridge was developed with two specific goals in mind – to have more stopping power than the 9mm Parabellum, and better handling and manageability than the .45 ACP. With these goals in mind, a team comprised of technicians from Smith & Wesson and Winchester built the .40 S&W cartridge.

The final result from the Smith & Wesson/Winchester team was a rimless, 10x22mm round that housed a .40-inch (10mm) lead bullet weighing between 105 to 200 grain (gr). It’s considered a middleground ammunition, one that holds enough stopping power to be effective for home defense and concealed carry, and is still manageable to shoot and handle the recoil – even for those with smaller frames.

As much as I love sipping political philosophies like fine wine, now isn’t the time. Of all the important questions to be asked in this manic hour, I offer this one: In America’s violent cities, is self-defense the last civil right or a path to the last rite? As violent crime rises and the leftists’ will to fight it plummets, we who are in the midst of daily destruction must make up our minds.

This story originally ran in the December 1963 issue of Outdoor Life under the title “Christmas Hasenpfeffer.” Some mornings are made for hound-dog music and this one in late December was as perfect for it as any I can remember. Snow covered the central Ohio countryside so that it resembled a wintry scene straight out of Currier & Ives. And it was cold enough to make a man appreciate his insulated boots and fur-lined mittens.

In Londonderry’s Musquash Conservation Area, shooters and hikers coexisted peacefully for years. Then in 2014, came the turning point. Residents appeared before the town council to voice concerns over gun owners in the space, a 1,000-acre wooded expanse dotted with ponds and walking trails. Hunting on the land was one thing, residents argued, but some visitors were using the woods for year-round target practice.

Last session, the Indiana House passed a permitless carry bill by a comfortable 65-31 margin but the Senate wasn't able to send a final measure to Gov. Eric Holcomb's desk.

How my First 'Christmas Gun' Grew into my Favorite

The Colt Detective Special is, by all accounts, seen as an "old man's gun" these days. In my case, it gets the reputation honestly as it was given to me by my favorite old man. Introduced in 1927-- the Roaring 20s-- at a time when films were still silent, The Great Gatsby was a brand-new novel, and aeroplanes were still covered in fabric, Colt's Detective Special was one of the first really good snub-nosed revolvers of its day. It beat the S&W Chief's Special to the punch by a couple of decades and, as a six-shot .38 Special, still outdid the five-shot J frame when it came to capacity.

The .380 ACP cartridge is seldom associated with recreational use. Whenever this pint-sized 9mm comes up in conversation it is almost always concerning self-defense and the tiny pistols that are commonly chambered to fire it. These guns are typically uncomfortable to shoot and are so snappy that you wouldn’t know that the .380 ACP generates less energy and what should feel like less recoil. However, if you happen to try that same cartridge through a gun with a little meat on its bones, you are bound to have an altogether different opinion of the shooting experience.

It's not just Californians that see something they like in Texas, with so many moving here. The governor of California now wants to copy the Texas abortion law. Specifically, the part saying the state does not have to enforce it. Instead - regular folks can, in court, by suing as many times as you want.

Reloading Room Organization

In my house, our reloading room started out as a craft room. When my sister and I were young, it was filled with popsicle sticks, pom-poms and other miscellaneous items we “might” use. As we grew older the room shrunk to half its size as my dad took up reloading and claimed the first half, then all of the room. When I started reloading and needed my own space, I first secured the inside of a cabinet and eventually my own bench. With such a small space, it’s incredibly important to keep yourself organized.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The gun-control movement is driven by raw emotion. Facts are irrelevant. Logic is spurned. Utter nonsense is solemnly intoned. It's little wonder that our most emotive president has made gun control his signature domestic issue. — Don Feder
