In 1891, Mauser Hunting Rifles developed the 6.5x55mm Swedish Mauser cartridge for testing and evaluation by the nations of Sweden and Norway. These two neighboring countries, then known as the United Kingdoms of Sweden and Norway, historically agreed on an ammunition caliber and then purchased firearms of their own choosing. This allowed for a level of logistical flexibility and interchangeability, as both countries together provided for their common defense. |

About six years ago, I bought a gun to round out an article about the Smith and Wesson “I”-Frame size. Maybe at one point I’d planned to sell the gun once photography had wrapped, but eventually the little jewel of a pistol wormed its way into my heart. Like many of the guns causing us to smile, the I-Frame was far from a practical buy. In fact, by the time S&W figured out how to marry the .38 special cartridge to a small-framed revolver — the iconic J-Frame — the I-Frame’s days were numbered. |

Krieghoff’s Gun of the Year series—a tradition launched in the late 1990s—has produced a diverse and unique set of one-of-a kind, theme-based guns. Such historically significant subjects as Abraham Lincoln, Buffalo Bill Cody, Leonardo da Vinci, the Galapagos Islands and the Spartan warrior have artfully graced the metal surfaces of these guns in years past. The list goes deeper, including the Australia gun, the Alamo Gun and a favorite, the Freedom Gun, which depicted the signing of the Declaration of Independence and other American imagery. |

On Dec. 27, 1932, the U.S. Patent Office granted Patent Case File No. 1,892,141, for a Semi-Automatic Rifle to one John C. Garand. The rest is history. Quebec-born Jean Cantius Garand, his name Americanized to John, grew up in Connecticut and learned to shoot after working at a shooting gallery after school as a kid. Working for the United States Bureau of Standards in Washington D.C. during World War I, he became a U.S. citizen in 1920 shortly after he began working at Springfield Armory, the Army's small arms plant he would call home for 34 years.

I was raised in a family of hunters but didn’t begin hunting myself until I was grown and living on my own. Most of my early hunting experiences were through my work as an outdoor writer, so I usually had a guide or a mentor along, but when you work in the industry, everyone assumes you already know stuff that, frankly, no one had ever really taught me. I figured it all out on my own as I went along through a series of mistakes and regrets, but the path could have been smoother if I had really understood these six things. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
There are other things so clearly out of the power of Congress, that the bare recital of them is sufficient, I mean the "...rights of bearing arms for defence, or for killing game..." These things seem to have been inserted among their objections, merely to induce the ignorant to believe that Congress would have a power over such objects and to infer from their being refused a place in the Constitution, their intention to exercise that power to the oppression of the people. —ALEXANDER WHITE (1787) |
