"A teenage girl testified that 20-year-old Marvin Carter was driving a red Ford Mustang with red flashing lights and a siren. The girl says she was driving with two friends in the car...but refused to stop because the lights weren't blue and the car didn't look like an undercover police car. She then dialed 9-1-1 and reported the license plate number."

"It was all part of a new California program -- the nation's first -- wherein state agents try to identify some of the estimated 170,000 firearms registered to owners who later run afoul of the law and are no longer allowed to possess weapons."

"Even the National Rifle Association supported the bill when it was debated in the Legislature last year, but a lawyer for the organization now questions whether the law is being enforced too broadly. Among his concerns: Gun owners can lose their weapons if they have temporary restraining orders imposed on them by the courts in domestic violence cases -- even if they're not convicted."

-------
NRA management gets its wish to "enforce existing gun laws" and protests when it a law they endorsed is applied in a way they didn't foresee.

Note how their attorney characterizes innocent gun owners who haven't been convicted as "dogs" and legitimizes gun registration.

This is the same DOJ that NRA reps have lauded to their members because of the good relationship they share.

Junk Science Oscars "Most shameful exploitation of a tragedy."

"Most shameful exploitation of a tragedy: Gun control activists exploited the Washington, D.C.-area sniper spree by calling for “ballistic fingerprinting” of guns before sale. Mandatory pre-sale ballistic fingerprinting, they hoped, might lead to reduced gun sales and even national gun registration."

"The activists ignored the failure of existing pre-sale ballistics fingerprinting programs in Maryland and New York to lead to a single conviction. A report by California state ballistics experts -- and hushed up by California’s pro-gun control attorney general -- concluded that pre-sale ballistic fingerprinting was impractical. Moreover, Americans already own more than 200 million guns; those won't be included in any ballistics database."

"It’s no wonder the gun-controllers tried to take advantage of public panic. Those are this year’s junk science winners (weeners?). Have a great 2003 and stay tuned for more next year."

MD: Gun sales may decline due to new law

FULL TEXT BELOW:

HANCOCK, MD DECEMBER 27 - Gun store owners in Maryland are worried that a new law, designed to increase hand gun safety, will decrease hand gun sales. A law kicks in on the first of the New Year, requiring all newly manufactured handguns to have internal locks, which can keep them from being fired. Otherwise, they are not allowed to be sold in Maryland.

It is part of the "The Responsible Gun Safety Act," signed by Governor Glendening back in 2000. One gun shop owner said the law rules out about 95 percent of his current stock. He said many suppliers will cut Maryland gun sellers off because they do not want to meet the new safety requirements.

"Within the next year to two, it will definitely hurt our business," stated Lance Hendershot, a gun shop owner.

There is one out for gun sellers; they can install the required locks on the guns they already have in stock.
