I don’t think there’s really any argument nowadays that optics are not a tremendous advantage when it comes to hitting stuff with a firearm. The mechanics of “Put the dot on the target and press the trigger” are so much simpler than “Focus hard on the front sight while making sure that it’s nicely centered in the rear notch and put the front sight on the target but NO! NO! Look at the sight, not the target!” that pistols with optics have to compete in separate divisions so some of the other kids can win trophies, too. |

Gun control advocates in California will get a second chance to make their case that a Bay Area county ordinance restricting where firearms stores can be located does not violate the Second Amendment. In an order Tuesday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit granted en banc review in Teixeira v. County of Alameda County. A split panel in May sided with opponents of the ordinance finding that officials had not sufficiently justified a 1998 regulation prohibiting the sale of firearms within 500 feet of a residentially zoned area.

Would it lead to the wild, wild west, or would it make the streets safer? That's the debate over a proposal to allow gun owners in Indiana to carry without a state permit. Rick Geary, owner of Falls City Firearms in Clarksville, Indiana, has been buying and selling guns for years. He says if you can legally own a gun, you should not need permission to carry it.

At the 2016 SHOT Show in Las Vegas, editor Jeff John and I fondled the preview version of the Micro 9 at the Kimber booth. “I want you to write this up,” he said. You may recall a few years ago the City held a oddly named “Gun Buyback” event, oddly named since the City of Tucson did not sell the guns in the first place. During the one-day event, people were encouraged to trade any firearm for a $50 Safeway gift card with “no questions asked.” It was a strange activity for the city since it was providing a service that is already available in the private sector; anyone can take a gun to a gunshop and sell it to the licensed dealer. Unlike the licensed dealer, however, the “no questions asked” caveat made clear that the city was willing to act as a fence for stolen property.

With just a few weeks until President-elect Donald Trump takes the oath of office, supporters of tougher gun laws are bracing for a battle, and Baltimore County's police chief will be front and center in the debate. This comes as a national group gives Maryland one of the highest grades for gun safety, but there's a catch. |
