"At least he didn’t overtly telegraph concessions on guns. My worst fear was that National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre’s Friday press statement was going to find something to offer the mob in the hopes that it would somehow appease the blood lust, metaphoric and otherwise, being directed at NRA members and at gun owners in general. I ventured a faint fantasy hope for leadership that would inspire gun owner unity in the face of the most intense and pervasive firestorm of directed hatred I’ve ever witnessed. That “national conversation on guns” the antis said they wanted was (surprise!) always intended to be a monologue -- they get to speak and demand and impose, and you get to agree. |

"After the Newtown, Connecticut mass murder, anti-rights politicians and media shifted into high gear. The only “solution” for such a tragedy was another gun ban; within two days, Senator Dianne Feinstein introduced her version. Pundits like the Washington Post’s Ezra Klein politicized the tragedy by claiming that America is an unusually violent place, with the only answer being more gun control."

"The city’s murders have also made it a case study in the debate on gun control. Second Amendment defenders point to the fact that Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in the nation as proof that gun control is not only ineffective, but causes more violence." ... |

"Day after day, gun rights supporters are subjected to conjecture, hyperbole, and unsubstantiated 'facts.' An unending stream of incomplete percentages with no indication of absolute magnitudes. Proof of causality and even correlation are casually dismissed and entire arguments and social policies are built on false assumptions and irrationality. How dangerous are guns in society? Is there really a gun-death epidemic? We hear a lot of presumed answers, explanations, and rationalizations, but let’s look at some hard facts. No causality or correlation between factors assumed here. Instead, we are taking a straight look at the numerical risk as it pans out in the real world . . ." ... |

"People who preach 'common sense gun control' argue that limiting ammunition magazine capacity limits a killers’ ability to kill. Ipso facto. Notice I didn’t say 'murder.' As John Grisham might say, there’s a time to kill. OK, 'stop the threat.' When you or other innocent life are in imminent, credible danger of death or bodily harm you probably don’t want your lethality limited by a capacity-limited ammunition magazine. As the rabbi says, 'no one ever finished a gunfight wishing he had less bullets.' As Nick would say, where’s the data? There isn’t any. Well, there is some . . ." ... |

I'd kick the Army/Navy/Airforce/Coastguard out too. National Guard? Who needs them if every square inch of the state is gun free. Think of how much money we'd save. No firearm training for cops. ... "Obviously the need for a state militia has been replaced by the National Guard and Coast Guard, whereby trained military personnel are entrusted with the defense of this country against domestic enemies. Their weapons are tightly controlled and safeguarded. The only two reasons for a citizen to own a firearm are for hunting or defense of the household from intruders. In either case, ownership of a single-shot rifle is more than adequate to satisfy these purposes. There is absolutely no need for any U.S. civilian to own any weapon more powerful or sophisticated than this. Accordingly, all single-shot rifles must be licensed and registered to the degree necessary to match weapon to owner at the click of a computer key." ... |
