"I recently ripped the Huffington Post’s pet firearms enthusiast a new you-know-what. My post The Truth About Mike 'The Gun Guy' Weisser slated the anti-ballistic Bay Stater for telling doctors to warn patients not to keep a gun in the home. Mike got the memo. Check the headline hovering over his latest 'common sense' gun control screed: A New Video Tells the Truth About Guns and Some Folks Don’t Like It. Again, we own rights to that phrase. Again, we’re not going there. In fact, TTAG owes Mike a debt of gratitude for bringing our brand to the attention of the HuffPo’s hoplophobic readers. Thanks Mike! Now about that post . . ." ...

"From being an advocate of the United Nations’ Arms Trade Treaty to pouring money into Washington state’s victorious I-594 gun control campaign, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms has come up with a list of the top 10 ‘anti-gunners’ for 2014."

"Not surprisingly, former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg took the top spot this year for dumping millions into creating Everytown for Gun Safety and also helping to finance the I-594 effort in Washington." ...

"On page 80, there was a lengthy and blistering article authored by U.S. Sen. Joseph D. Tydings titled: 'Americans and the Gun.' Tydings began by proclaiming that he was an avid sportsman, hunter and gun owner who strongly believes in constitutional rights. He finished his article by stating that he would be more than willing to register his guns with the government and have his possession of those guns subject to the government being willing to issue a license to him to allow that possession. The bulk of the article berated the National Rifle Association and its then 1 million members for defeating proposed federal legislation that would mandate nationwide licensing and registration." ...

"With less than 72 hours remaining in 2014, two opinion pieces have appeared – including one in the Huffington Post yesterday – that try very hard to blame the Second Amendment and those who defend it for the recent slayings of two New York City police officers."

"The HuffPo piece, by Peter Dreier, an E.P. Clapp Distinguished professor of politics ... is a defense of ultra-liberal New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, who is in trouble with rank-and-file cops. The other opinion, in the Dec. 26 Washington Post, is by Kimberly Yonkers, MD, a professor at the Yale School of Medicine. Her effort is to shift the focus from mental health – despite a pattern of high-profile shooters who have had histories of mental problems – onto guns." ...

"If you own a gun and it gets stolen, chances are you won’t get it back. That’s the not entirely surprising conclusion from a stolen gun study in The Land of Lincoln. Make the jump for the official stats, via sj-r.com. Meanwhile, 'According to the U.S. Department of Justice’s National Crime Victimization Survey, an average of 232,400 guns were stolen each year from 2005 to 2010. Guns were recovered in only 17 percent of reported burglaries and in 15 percent of other property crimes.' Assuming that rate has continued to today, ignoring the possibility that there are at least as many guns stolen that were not reported . . ." ...

"As the year winds down, there were several stories of interest in 2014, but a letter in yesterday’s Spokane Spokesman Review highlighted one of the top two gun news issues – passage of Initiative 594 – which promises to have long-term ripple effects nationally, setting a dangerous precedent by which deep-pocket anti-gunners can erode an important civil right."

"Running a close second is the furor over so-called 'smart gun' technology. This was highlighted yesterday by a story about perhaps the most prominent developer of the technology in yesterday’s Globe and Mail." ...

"Having recently moved from magazine capacity-limited Colorado to small town in rural Missouri, I was naturally in the market for a new gun. My first week in town I was checking out the two local Ma and Pa Gun ‘n Pawn shops and lo and behold one of them had a brand new FNX-9 I’d been eying. And it was a bi-tone! And better yet they offered me a fair trade-in value for my Glock 19 Gen 3 that I never really liked all that much (though I ended up keeping it). I did have to get over the ironic fact that this FNX was equipped with three 10-round Second Amendment-restricted magazines, but I rationalized I could easily ditch them on Gunbroker for near the cost of standard 17-rounders so I took the plunge . . ." ...

"The Ruger Mark I/II/III and 22/45 series of pistols are awesome little guns. And like the 10/22 rifles, plenty of people count their first pistol experience as one that involves Ruger’s .22 plinker extraordinaire. One problem — some might say the only problem — with the pistols, though, is how damn difficult they are to disassemble and reassemble for cleaning. Enter this oddly shaped, but VERY functional tool from The Right Tool Company . . ." ...

"A gun believed to belong to Adolf Hitler sold for $150,000 on Christmas Eve with the help of a business in Bloomington, Illinois."

"Midwest Exchange posted the auction on GunBroker.com for the seller, local newspaper The Pantagraph reported. Bidding started at $100,000 on Dec. 1, but the auction received only two bids — $124,000 and $136,500 — neither of which topped the reserve price set before the auction started."

"However, the offer also attracted an outside bidder who contacted Midwest Exchange personally and offered the winning price of $150,000."

"I write as a small government conservative ... In this piece, I make the case that Dianne Feinstein is just as pro Second Amendment as is Sarah Palin. I recognize that between abortion and torture, torture is even worse. Torture inflicts pain and suffering on a living human being and it undermines the rule of law in ways that abortion does not."

"Sarah Palin says she supports the Second Amendment but then candidly supports waterboarding which undermines the Fifth Amendment (i.e. the right against self-incrimination). If we permit the government to demolish the Fifth Amendment, then how is the Second Amendment safe? It seems self-evident to me that these two Amendments mutually support one another." ...

"Two cops shot. The shooter targeted them and espoused hatred for law enforcement officers before pulling the trigger."

"The public was outraged and public safety threatened."

"But unlike New York City, there were little to no invectives against public officials when these two Pennsylvania officers were shot. There was no blame or heated rhetoric. No mention of 'blood being on the hands' of Pa. Gov. Tom Corbett. There were no Rudy Giuliani sitings[sic] and blame on President Barack Obama and protesters around the country calling attention to the chronic problem of unarmed Black men dying at the hands of police, or want-to-be cops like George Zimmerman who fatally shot Trayvon Martin." ...

... "He admits that [redacted] pulled the trigger, but says that 'the NRA and its fanatic Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre also have blood on their hands.' Why? Because the NRA has opposed 'any kind of sensible gun control laws, including a federal law requiring background checks on would-be gun buyers,' and, tellingly, 'a national registry of guns.' Yep, apparently, cop killers cannot be stopped without letting the federal government catalog every privately-owned (although gun ownership is hardly 'private' if the feds are empowered to know about it) firearm owned by all the hundreds of millions of Americans who will not murder any cops (or anyone else)." ...

"In the notoriously anti-second amendment town of Madison, Wisconsin, a concealed carry permit holder from Tennessee refrained from shooting a man who menaced him with a fake, but gun shaped and realistic looking laser/lighter. The man drew his real gun but did not shoot. The case contrasts with similar, recent cases where the police have shot people who pointed toy guns at them, and/or refused to obey commands while being armed with what turned out to be fake, but real looking guns. ..." ...

Impossible! Australia is a gun control lovin’, gun-free paradise! The recent Sydney siege that claimed two lives was an outlier! Or, well, you know. "Did you know that the Second Amendment is a “stupid” amendment? Did you know that the individual right to keep and bear arms does not exist outside of the US Constitution, but was granted by an incredibly biased court decision in 2008? Well… Neither did I. But I guess we learn something new every day. And today we can thank Tom Hastings, writing in the Wisconsin Gazette, for enlightening us on the idiocy of those gun-happy morons who crafted our founding document and the first ten amendments to the US Constitution." ...

"In a recent column for the Wisconsin Gazette, writer Tom Hastings took the position that the U.S. should abolish the constitutionally protected right to bear arms. The Portland State University teacher and director of Peace Voice criticized America as a nation that 'fetishizes, lionizes, valorizes, idolizes, and sacralizes guns' more than any other nation with the exception of Mozambique."

"His article suggested that gun violence has passed the point at which the nation should 'repeal the stupid Second Amendment,' going on to insist that America’s founding fathers in no way supported the right of individuals to freely carry firearms." ...

... "To say that Hastings’ knowledge of history (United States and legal) is wanting would be an understatement. For instance, the 'principle' which imposes the Bill of Rights on the states, the Fourteenth Amendment — which Hastings lauds — is the very basis by which the Supreme Court held that an individual is constitutionally permitted to own a gun."

"Not to mention, Hastings got wrong the year of that landmark decision: The case was decided in 2010, not 2008. In 2008, the Supreme Court decided District of Columbia v. Heller which pertained only to an individual’s gun ownership in federal enclaves — like the District of Columbia. It did not apply to the individual states." ...

"Close to two dozen groups submitted their arguments last week in the fight over whether Californians should be allowed to carry firearms in public for self defense."

"The case, Peruta V. San Diego, challenged Sheriff Bill Gore’s may-issue handgun carry permit policy, which a 9th Circuit Court of Appeals panel of three judges last month deemed unconstitutional. A simple self defense claim was not enough to acquire a carry permit in San Diego County."
