IL: Chicago Police to Get 1,400 Stun Guns, Conflict Training

Chicago police officers will be equipped with 1,400 stun guns by June 2016 as well as a five-step de-escalation approach for handling volatile situations, city officials announced.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Interim Chicago Police Superintendent John Escalante announced the additional reforms during a press conference Wednesday. The mayor said he believes the changes will inject more humanity into the way officers do their jobs.

Police responded to a reported stabbing on the 300 block of Apple Street Monday night.

Police said they received a call for a domestic disturbance at around 6 p.m. Tuesday night that resulted in the stabbing. Authorities said that upon arrival on the scene they learned that a man and a woman, whom they have declined to name, were engaged in an argument that turned into a physical altercation.

A neighbor in Stanly County woke up to flashing lights and several squad and crime-scene vehicles but didn't know a father and son inside a home got into a deadly argument.

"When I woke up I was scared; I didn't know what was going on," the woman, who asked not to be identified, said.

A bill authorizing students with concealed handgun licenses (CHL) to carry their firearms on public university campuses was signed into law in Texas last June and goes into effect on August 1, 2016. There are still many details waiting to be worked out, as explained by the Campus Carry Q&A article on the UTDallas website.

Two things seem to spark an upswing in applications for gun permits, officials say: high-profile shootings and talk of stricter gun control.

“Over the last week or so it’s been an avalanche,” said Sullivan County Clerk Daniel Briggs on Dec. 9. The spike followed the Nov. 13 terror attacks in Paris, the Nov. 27 attack on a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, Colo., and the Dec. 2 mass shooting in San Bernardino, Calif.

They say Clint Grimes, from Alabama, went into the store to buy alcohol, but employees wouldn't sell it to him because of his level of intoxication. Grimes then apparently tried to steal something and Nora Carroll, a woman working there, and Stephen Daugherty, her fiance, confronted him.

Licensed Texans will be able to openly carry holstered handguns many places as of Friday — but not in a handful of Tarrant County court buildings.

County commissioners unanimously voted Tuesday to “reaffirm” that weapons are not allowed in the Tim Curry Criminal Justice Center, Family Law Center, Tom Vandergriff Civil Courts Building, the historic 1895 Courthouse or the Scott D. Moore Juvenile Justice Center.

An off-duty Houston police officer thought he was meeting two men who expressed an interest in buying a couple of his personal firearms.

Something didn't feel right to HPD officer C. Curry and when he pulled up to a small public park in south Houston on Tuesday. He became the victim of an attempted armed robbery that quickly turned into a gun fight, police said.

Part of the problem with the gun debate in America is that gun owners and people who aren't comfortable with gun ownership are, to a certain extent, just different kinds of people.

Around 282 people every day - more than 32,000 people every year - are dying from a totally preventable cause.

This totally preventable cause, by the way, just isn't a problem in most other developed nations.

Texas’ new open carry laws go into effect on Jan.1, and the Round Rock Police Department is working to spread awareness.

The new laws mean firearm owners will be able to carry their guns in a waist or shoulder holster in most areas, current laws say gun owners must conceal their weapons.
