An hour before dawn Jackie Van Cleave’s War Eagle roared away from the marina into the dark waters. Dave Ransom, who helps with Jackie’s duck-hunting operations, stood at the helm and guided the boat through the cold December darkness into more open water near the center of the lake. Black pillars appeared against the starlit horizon—the towering cypress trees that have become a symbol of the lake—and we steered directly for them. The motor slacked as Dave directed the boat from the main body of the lake into a narrow channel lined by massive trunks, and soon to my left and right I could see cypress stumps bulging from the black water outside the beam of the War Eagle’s bow light.

The Battle at Wounded Knee is a significant battle in American history, as it put an end to the Indian Wars and is marked as the last official defeat of the Native Americans. But what’s not taught in history lessons is that Wounded Knee was one of the first federally backed gun confiscations in the history of the United States, and it ended in the massacre of nearly 300 unarmed people.

Despite efforts of people such as former presidential candidate Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke and Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam the Second Amendment has made it through another year, although many in the firearms community will be glad to see 2019 in their rearview.

It’s been a year of momentous achievement and mind-numbing stupidity, with some remarkably revealing moments along the way.

The Ruger Super GP100 is the latest revolver from the company’s custom shop, and it’s a nod to the fact that eight-shot wheel guns chambered in .38 Special have become extremely popular in action shooting competition. It stems from Ruger’s foray into competitive shooting; when the company formed its first ever professional shooting team, it also entered the eight-shot revolver market with a Redhawk model. ”

With the snow piling up and temperatures falling precipitously in the other direction, deer headed to their winter yards early again this year. Typically, this annual exodus doesn’t occur until after hunting season. But recent weather fluctuations have driven deer to their winter haunts during the late muzzleloader season with increasing frequency, resulting in what some consider easy pickings.

The tradition of making New Year’s resolutions — a promise to do good on acts of self-improvement — has been around for hundreds of years. While many people vow to eat better, exercise more, stop smoking and build up their finances, it is far easier to fulfill New Year’s resolutions for an activity for which you are passionate, like hunting.

If you thought you can’t top the stupidity we experienced in 2019, brace yourself for 2020 because it’s going to be a pronoun-fueled weather cult pinko freakshow. But it won’t be all amusing antics – the left hates us and its ugly mask is coming off, revealing the even uglier fascist visage lurking beneath. If you listen to them, and if you aren’t an insufferable goo goo wimp who refuses to hear them, you will know that they intend to silence you, even imprison you, and deprive you of the ability to participate in your own governance.

“What the hell is the matter with you?” came the voice from above.

To that point, I had always lived in rural settings, where I could walk out the front — or back — door and shoot. It had not occurred to me how important that was until it was taken away. Gone were the days of working up loads for my rifles and testing them instantly, and adjusting and checking again. The ritual of shooting a little bit every day was no longer an option for me. I was a member of the gun club and I could go when time allowed, but driving to the range to shoot a few rounds wasn’t always an option.

Tommy Lee Libbett Jr., 25, pleaded guilty to two counts of theft of firearms from a federal firearms licensee.

He has a long history of substance abuse, his attorney said.

Libbett was sentenced this week by U.S. District Judge Janet Neff in Grand Rapids to concurrent 37-month prison terms, to be followed by three years on supervised release.

He was arrested after a running from police while he was carrying a backpack loaded with stolen guns, according to a federal complaint filed by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The break-ins occurred early July 14.
