"While it is an article of faith among gun-control proponents that government restrictions on firearms reduces violence and crime, two new U.S. studies could find no evidence to support such a conclusion."
"The National Academy of Sciences issued a 328-page report based on 253 journal articles, 99 books, 43 government publications, a survey of 80 different gun-control laws and some of its own independent study. In short, the panel could find no link between restrictions on gun ownership and lower rates of crime, firearms violence or even accidents with guns." |

"Those people, the Brady Campaign warned, might 'welcome 2005 with an act of stupidity,' defined in the release as 'the indiscriminate unloading of weapons into the air,' or 'celebratory gunfire.' And 'they may kill an innocent in the bargain, too,' the anti-gun group stated."
"However, even the gun control group, Americans for Gun Safety Foundation, found fault Wednesday with the Brady Campaign's use of the words 'overexcited and under-intelligent' while referring to gun owners."
" 'I don't think that any gun owners are likely to be persuaded by a press release that effectively calls them stupid,' said Casey Anderson, executive director of the Americans for Gun Safety Foundation." |

"Fortunately, a critical mass of gun owners has been awakened. Thanks to their organizing, to the new medium of the Internet which allows them to bypass a hostile 'mainstream' press, and through political involvement, 1994's so-called 'assault weapons' ban has expired."
"Now is not the time to rest, but to understand how we got to where such clear infringements of the Second Amendment were considered politically feasible. Be forewarned: more "gun control" laws are waiting in the wings the instant we let down our guard. Where we will be 50 years from now, when GUNS will hopefully observe its centennial, is up to us." |

"The role of guns in U.S. society is a subject of intense policy debate and disagreement. However, current research and data on firearms and violent crime are too weak to support strong conclusions about the effects of various measures to prevent and control gun violence, says a new report from the National Academies' National Research Council. A comprehensive research program on firearms is needed if criminal-justice and crime-prevention policy is to have a sound basis."
"Some of today's most pressing policy issues in this area cannot be tackled with existing data and research methods, which are weak, the report says. ..." |

"Diller, a kind of shotgunning version of Thomas Edison, proved his point. Three more shooters put the shotgun with a 31-inch extension barrel to their shoulders and dusted clay targets, while the gun emitted a pop slightly louder than a pellet rifle."

"A small geyser of snow flies up two inches from the head of a black squirrel foraging for nuts that it and other squirrels buried during the fall. Contrary to popular belief, squirrels don't remember where they bury nuts. But if enough squirrels bury enough nuts in enough places, chances are good all of them will find something to eat all winter long."
"While he might not be among the rocket scientists of the animal world, this squirrel is smart enough to realize that the loud noise probably doesn't bode well for him, and in seconds he's high in a maple tree, chattering as I struggle to reload the .32-caliber muzzle-loading rifle."
"The powder and ball are rammed home easily enough, but then I spill the little canister of percussion caps that sets off the charge in the gun. By the time I retrieve a few caps from under the snow, the squirrel has moved nearly 100 yards away, effectively out of shooting range." |

A Fort Wayne teen has been sentenced to 18-months probation for possessing a firearm on school property.
Nineteen-year-old Keith E. Williams was acquitted of aggravated battery in early December for shooting Jamaal Gill in the parking lot of Northrop High School after a track meet on May fourth.
A judge said Williams should not serve prison time because he was acting in self defense. Williams shot Gill after Gill stabbed him in the leg with a sharp object.
The judge sentenced Williams to 18-months in prison, but suspended that sentence.
The shooting happened near the end of the Summit Athletic Conference track and field championship, which was halted and completed another day. |
