... "Thanks to the efforts of freedom advocates such as John Lott, Obama’s efforts to stay under the radar are now glistening in the sunlight. Lott reviewed an unsettling and lengthy list of Obama’s 'processes,' starting with the President's intention to ignore at least 20 parts of the 2012 omnibus spending bill ... Using the controversial and likely unconstitutional 'signing statements,' Obama said, 'I have advised Congress that I will not construe these provisions as preventing me from fulfilling my constitutional responsibility … such measures as I shall judge necessary and expedient.' ... To rub it in, Obama iterated his position: 'Our spending decisions shall not be treated as dependent on the approval of congressional committees.' ..." ... |

"My comments are relative to Mr. David W. Driver's letter about gun violence (control)."
"Far am I from a Bible scholar much less a Christian theologian, perhaps as Mr. Driver. However, two thousand years ago I suspect a dagger or short sword was equivalent to a present day hand gun as a means of personal protection."
"On the night Christ was betrayed, disciple Peter sliced off the ear of the servant of the high priest with his sword. What was Peter doing with a sword? Christ surely knew about it. If he said, 'Peter, you dolt, I've told you time and again, no swords nor knives!' it was not recorded. He simply told Peter to re-sheath it. Did he tell him to surrender it? No." ... |

"Data recently released by the National Center for Health Statistics shows that in 2008, the number and per capita rate of firearm accident deaths fell to an all-time low. There were 592 firearm accident deaths (0.19 such accidents per 100,000 population) in 2008, as compared to 613 accidents (.20 per 100,000) in 2007. In 2008, the chance of a child dying in a firearm accident was roughly one in a million."
"Firearm accidents accounted for 0.5% of all accidental deaths; well below the percentages accounted for by motor vehicle accidents, falls, fires, poisonings, and several other more common types of mishaps." ... |

"While waiting in line to pony up for my range time recently, a pleasant man in spectacles and his son struck up a conversation with Matt, the owner of Sovereign Arms. Sovereign Arms is the scruffy shooting range at the intersection of 141 and 21 in Fenton outside St. Louis. I frequent their establishment for the fair prices and good service. It’s where I first showed my grandsons how to shoot a pistol. Matt’s handling a small object…" ... |

"Regular practice plays the crucial role in creating and maintaining life-saving proficiency with a deadly weapon. Especially when you train without bullets. 'Dry firing' your gun can help you achieve many of the life-saving goals of marksmanship and safe gun handling you need at no cost at all. In fact, I’m down with the oft-stated calculation that dry firing should account for more than 50 percent of one’s practice time. Here’s what I do…" ... |

"It is, of course, reason to celebrate that Flagstaff is on track to finish 2011 without a single murder inside the city."
"Flagstaff is hardly Mayberry, RFD, but violent crimes of all types have plummeted in recent years, thanks to more community policing and better use of neighborhood-level police reports." ...
"But we are also realistic enough to know that lethal violence in a state with lax gun laws is hard to keep at a zero level for long. As every study shows, more guns mean more gun violence, everything else being equal. But with every state, city or region being different, establishing direct causation between restrictive gun laws and lower crime is like hitting a moving target. ..." ... -------

"An examination of North Carolina's concealed-gun permit program by The New York Times underscores the state's folly in allowing concealed weapons in public parks. And it shows just how right Winston-Salem and other cities are to limit, as much as possible, pistol-packin' in public parks. Citizens should fight any legislative attempts to allowed concealed weapons in other public places, such as bars." ... -------
Submitter's Note: The JournalNow Staff clearly didn't bother to do any real research on the subject, because if they had they would have found that the NYT piece actually showed permit-holders are significantly more law-abiding than the average citizen. |

... "Constitutional scholars argue over the intent of the Second Amendment, and how it is impacted by the 14th. We claim no qualifications to speak to those legal arguments."
"But we do know gun ownership is not something to take lightly, and neither is the carrying of a concealed weapon. It is a moral responsibility with potentially mortal consequences. But it is only logical that people should have the right to defend themselves."
"By applying for a permit, people are asserting their right of self-defense, and expressing their willingness to abide by the law. People who follow society’s rules should not be placed at the mercy of those who do not. That shouldn’t change every time they cross a state line." |

"If every place in America is forced to be just like every other place when it comes all laws and regulation and taxes and collective bargaining and trans fat and this and that (including gay marriage, come to think of it), isn't that supposed to be a bad thing? Or should the standard for gun rights and many other things (free speech, religious liberty, not having to quarter soldiers, etc.) ultimately be set at the highest level possible? "RUSH: Government, spelled out, ideally and flawlessly and perfectly in the Constitution.
