"Socially-screened" investment portfolios -- those that bar investments in gun companies and those that make alcohol, tobacco, and other "sin" products, are increasingly popular.

According to a report by the "Social Investment Forum", companies that make weapons are the second most widely banned product in screened portfolios.

(Of course, they could also be skewing their data, we don't know.)

Despite new measures to "secure the safety of commercial air travel", an agency of the federal government continues to sell an "easily concealable, fake silver dollar that includes a double-bladed hidden knife." Offered by the U.S. Mint and available via the Internet, it "can likely slip past an airport metal detector when concealed with other coins in a coin purse."

KABA NOTE: Great! Let's all get one before their supplies run out. Even if you aren't travelling by air, it looks like a handy gadget.

The NRA and other opponents say additional background checks are unnecessary and accuse supporters of shamelessly exploiting the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

DeWine and McCain said they plan to force a vote on the current version by attaching their bill to "the first appropriate, amendable vehicle" - possibly homeland security legislation - when the Senate reconvenes in January.

In July, the DOJ reported that since the Brady Law went into effect 2/94, background checks have kept 689,000 "criminals and other prohibited purchasers" from buying guns from licensed dealers. Two-thirds (458,000) of those were "convicted felons or fugitives from the law".

"The decline in gun deaths is proof that gun control laws work... We don't know exactly how many lives have been saved or how many crimes were prevented because these felons couldn't get a handgun," said Mrs. Brady.

...And the ongoing political wrangling to commit millions to "improve hospital security."

The shotgun-toter forced the three relatives who lived there -- a 54-year-old man and two teen-agers -- into a den. White, meanwhile, went upstairs, and the second gunman followed. A shot was heard, and then the unidentified gunman dragged White's body down the stairs, dropped him in the street and fled.

In his forthcoming book, "Bias," published by Regnery Publishing, Goldberg unloads on his ex-employer.

CBS News President Andrew Heyward once told him, "of course there's a liberal bias in the news. All the networks tilt left... If you repeat any of this, I'll deny it."

He says he wrote the book because he cares about journalism... Goldberg became something of a pariah at CBS after accusing the network of liberal bias in a 1996 op-ed piece for the Wall Street Journal.

PTA President Yafa Ifrah said, "The parents support zero tolerance for weapons because children can start out with toy guns and before you know it, it escalates to real guns. You have to put it in their heads at a young age that guns are bad [or] you will have a hard time controlling them later."
