"Those are worthy goals—first developing a marksmanship curriculum, and also making a point of educating young minds on real-world occurrences that demonstrate the practical, life-saving benefits of an armed citizenry. And it’s vital to encourage the next generations to embrace their firearms heritage, lest the anti-gunners win their long-term goals simply by waiting for the current one to die out."

"Imagine had a high-profile white media face of News Corporation attacked a black organization devoted to the Constitutionally-enshrined Bill of Rights with lies, and then publicly and militantly libeled them as black supremacists in front of a national audience. Imagine if that had the effect of outraging millions of good Americans unfairly smeared as racists -- and audience members, advertisers and investors, at that."

On CNN contributor Roland Martin’s podcast posted to his website Monday, Jason Whitlock, the columnist who inspired Bob Costas’ commentary on gun control during halftime of Sunday’s Dallas Cowboys-Philadelphia Eagles game on NBC, revealed his peculiar take on the National Rifle Association (NRA).

Whitlock spoke out against the NFL’s handling of the aftermath of Jovan Belcher’s suicide and gun issues in his Sunday FoxSports.com column. During Martin’s podcast, he likened the NRA to the Ku Klux Klan and tied the group to the dangerous street culture that unfortunately dominates “so many black youths.”

The United States Court of Appeals decided last week to uphold New York state's law that requires applicants to present "proper cause" if they want to carry a concealed handgun in public. The proper cause provision of the law calls for applicants to show "a special need for self protection distinguishable from that of the general community or of persons engaged in the same profession," according to the Attorney General's Office. This case has generated strong emotions on both sides because New York has already banned carrying handguns openly.

How do we reduce gun crime and Aurora-style mass shootings when Americans already own nearly 300 million firearms? Maybe by allowing more people to carry them.

Did Jovan Belcher, the 6’2” 228 pound linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs, need a gun to kill his girlfriend Kasandra Perkins? How about to commit suicide? Apparently some think that Saturday's murder-suicide tragedy in Kansas City wouldn't have happened if he hadn't had a firearm.

Amazingly, during halftime on NBC’s "Sunday Night Football," Bob Costas told viewers he believed: “If Jovan Belcher didn’t possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today.”

On Saturday, a rich 25-year-old man, Jovan Belcher, murdered his 22-year-old girlfriend, the mother of his child. First, columnist Jason Whitlock of Fox Sports suggested that this “25-year-old kid” wasn’t responsible for his actions – it was the “gun culture” that was to blame. Then, Bob Costas of NBC repeats this idiotic notion, even though the 6’2”, 228 lb. linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs could easily have murdered his girlfriend with a knife.

As you probably know by now, Kansas City Chiefs player Jovan Belcher used a gun to kill his girlfriend Kasandra Perkins and himself, leaving behind a 3 month old daughter. Anti gun advocates are always quick to jump on these kind of tragedies to make their case against gun ownership. Bob Costa took time at the halftime of the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys game last night to pontificate using the same boring nonsensical arguments, the most ridiculous being that if guns were just restricted, and if Jovan had not had a gun that morning, he and his girlfriend would still be alive. A completely absurd notion. People who want to kill other people rarely obey gun laws.

Guns and the right to own guns has been a heated topic for debate recently in the state of Vermont. State Rep. Fred Maslack has proposed a new bill that would require “non-gun owning” citizens of Vermont to register and pay a $500 fee to the state, for not owning a gun.

Many people are irate about the proposed bill, accusing Maslack of trying to interfere with their right to bear arms, as stated by the second amendment in the Bill of Rights.

George Zimmerman's defense team released a color photograph from the night he shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, showing him with a bloody nose. The release comes as doubts surround the statements made by police who responded to the scene of the shooting on Feb. 26, 2012.

It was a strange development in a case that has seen more than its share: Chris Serino, the lead police investigator in the Trayvon Martin shooting, hired famed Casey Anthony defense attorney Jose Baez to represent him at his upcoming deposition in the case.

The latest victim of Florida's "stand your ground" law was buried in Georgia on Saturday -- eight days after the vehicle he and three other black teens were sitting in was pumped full of bullets by a man who objected to their loud music.

Cops say 45-year-old Michael David Dunn fired eight or nine shots into the SUV, snatching the life from the body of 17-year-old Jordan Russell Davis, who was sitting in a back seat outside a Jacksonville, Fla., convenience store.

A color photograph of George Zimmerman with a bloody, swollen nose taken on the night he shot and killed unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin last February was posted on the Internet on Monday by Zimmerman's legal defense team.

As the photo began to be circulated widely by the news media, lawyers on both sides disagreed about its significance to the second-degree murder case against Zimmerman.

"It's not a game changer," Zimmerman lawyer Mark O'Mara told Reuters. But O'Mara said the photo was significant in that it shows vividly the injuries Zimmerman incurred during his confrontation with Martin at a condominium in the central Florida town on Sanford.

"This is what we're advocating for because we want to make campus safer and not limit people's Second Amendment rights," said Thomas McNutt, Student Senate representative.

However, after a 38-19 vote, Student Body President John Claybrook decided to veto the bill - not because of personal opinion but because he feels it's what the majority of students want.

"With the past two referendums in 2009 and 2011 students voted both times against having concealed carry on campus," Claybrook said.

The Student Senate disagreed though and at last week's meeting, they voted to overturn Claybrook's veto.

NBC's Bob Costas, communicating through a spokesman Monday about on-air comments about guns he made Sunday night, "feels an unfortunate leap was taken that he was advocating taking away Second Amendment rights. He was not."

Costas declined comment to an interview request from USA TODAY Sports to speak about comments he made during NBC's NFL coverage Sunday night. But NBC spokesman Greg Hughes says,"In a short (on-air) time period he can cover only one aspect of a complicated issue. So he quoted (columnist Jason Whitlock) about the gun culture and an almost Wild West attitude in parts of this country. He is pro-sensible gun reform and pro-attitude adjustment on guns."

Ed.: Yeah, for values of 'gun reform' that include banning guns.

A group of lawmakers led by Sen. Richard Burr has for several years wanted to prohibit the VA from submitting those names to the gun-check registry unless a judge or magistrate deems the veteran to be a danger. This year’s version of the bill has 21 co-sponsors. It passed the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee by voice vote, a tactic generally reserved for noncontroversial legislation. Coburn’s amendment to the defense bill contained comparable language.

“All I am saying is, let them at least have their day in court if you are going to take away a fundamental right given under the Constitution,” Coburn said in the Senate debate last Thursday night.

The bill that’s catching flak from the mayor is HB 5225, which was introduced by Rep. Paul Opsommer, R-Dewitt. It passed the House in June by a 74-36 vote with bipartisan support, including from Lansing state Rep. Barb Byrum. The bill passed the Senate Judiciary Committee in September. It’s waiting on a vote in the Senate.

Federal law requires licensed gun dealers, like gun shops, to run a background check on all gun buyers. But unlicensed private dealers, like those selling online, do not have to. Michigan law fills in that loophole by requiring all handgun buyers to pass a background check before receiving a permit to purchase, as well as pass a basic firearms training exam.

Since 2007, the beginning of the largest economic downturn since the Great Depression, and throughout the slow recovery and continued uncertainty, gun sales in Colorado have soared, based on the number of people getting criminal-background checks.

The number of those checks, required for gun purchases, has climbed 58 percent over the past five years, with spikes this year immediately after the Aurora theater massacre and the abduction and slaying of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway.

Nationally, gun sales this post-election Black Friday broke all records, overwhelming the Federal Bureau of Investigation's background-checking system.
