The first option you have in an active shooter situation is to run.
"Anytime you're out, whether you're at a mall, children in school, government building, movie theatre, you should always know your way out. you should always know the quickest exit," said Lt. Brody Boucher with Michigan State Police.
That starts with always being aware of your surroundings. Because if you can't run, the next option is to hide.
Ed.: Or you could just shoot the attacker and call it a day. |

The morning after the appalling San Bernardino shooting that ended the lives of 14 innocent people and the two shooters themselves, a lot of questions remain. Was it a workplace revenge scenario? Was it ideological? A combination? Hopefully soon we will have answers.
But one thing can be predicted with confidence right now, especially as this shooting happened during the holiday shopping season: The big winners will be the gun industry. In one of the most appalling signs of our times, mass shootings function as free advertising for the gun industry, with levels of effectiveness that would make the marketers putting your Black Friday mailers together drool. |

With the shock of the San Bernardino massacre painfully fresh, City Council members signaled Thursday they may join a growing movement of cities pushing gun manufacturers to adopt safety measures.
Council members Thursday voted 6-0 for Tampa Police Department and city attorneys to look into joining Do Not Stand Idly By, a campaign that aims to use the purchasing power of local and federal government to lobby gun manufacturers to develop gun safety technology and set tougher standards for gun dealers. |

The aftermath is often the same, too. We’re reminded that no country in the world has the level of gun violence we do, which comes as no surprise when you consider we have roughly 5% of the world’s population and at least one-third of the civilian-owned firearms.
In the name of self-defense, American citizens can legally purchase enough firepower to bring down herds of elephants.
We get the same old calls for gun control, specifically assault weapons such as those used in San Bernardino to mow down the maximum possible number of human beings. But those calls always fade quietly due in large part to the gun lobby's control of Congress. |

A day after the mass shooting in San Bernardino, Calif., Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said that the U.S. "may be the most violent society in the world at this point, at least with respect to our own citizenry."
"Put it this way, people are saying we shouldn't allow people from other countries into our country, why would any country allow Americans to go there? We're the most violent society, or one of the most violent societies, on the face of the Earth," Malloy said during a meeting with The Day's editorial board Thursday. |

A Florida Senate bill could make it easier for gun owners to claim self-defense in deadly shootings.
A committee is taking up a Stand Your Ground bill.
It passed through a Senate subcommittee with a 5-1 vote. Also, the National Rifle Association is throwing its support behind the bill.
Here's how it would work: In any case of a shooting where there is a claim of self-defense, the burden of proof would shift from the shooter to the state.
That means once a motion is filed for self-defense, the state would have to put on a case proving why self-defense should not be accepted. Currently, that burden is on the shooter. |

Last week, the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Inc., was attacked in Colorado Springs. Although many details about the perpetrator, who killed three people and wounded nine, are still unclear, Colorado Springs mayor John Suthers said that the attacker’s motive could be inferred from the location he chose. Violence against clinics raises an important legal question: Does Planned Parenthood have a Second Amendment right to bear arms in self-defense? |

After the shooting of three students near UNC-CH last year, Kevan and I took a class to learn how to safely handle and carry a concealed weapon. We passed the written and shooting tests and have all the training required to carry concealed almost anywhere. However, we have not gone through the motions of getting our permits yet, because among other things we each spend the overwhelming majority of our days in places where it is a crime to carry the tools necessary to defend ourselves should the worst happen.
Specifically, I am talking about university campuses. |

Recent terror attacks around the world and mass shootings in the United States have led to a spike in the number of people looking to own firearms, a trend that’s likely to continue in the wake of Wednesday’s killings in Georgia and California, area gun experts say.
“We’ve had people who’d never dreamt they’d be in that position come in taking training on what kind of gun to get before they go out and buy a gun because that’s very important,” said Jeff Pedro, owner of SimTrainer Indoor Range and Firearms Training Center in Moraine. |

People around Louisiana do what they can to help protect themselves. However, when it comes to getting a conceal and carry permit, what should you know?
People who carry see their firearm more as a tool rather than a weapon, and licensed instructors say it's a choice you should think about.
So far, Louisiana has had its fare share of Conceal and Carry Permits.
"In 2015, the state of Louisiana has issued about 15,000 permits so far this year," said Louisiana State Police Trooper Melissa Matey. |

It is possible to shoot, to save your own life. But police and gun experts warn, there are steps any gun toting citizen should consider, first.
The FBI is on track to complete a record number of background checks this year. One day after the San Bernardino shootings, the 2A Shooting Center says they experienced a delay on calls for checks, waiting sometimes up to nearly half an hour.
"I could shoot to save my own life, yes, or the lives of family members," that's what a woman named Jane, told Tulsa's Channel 8 as our camera caught up to her, during her very first less at the 2A Shooting Center. Jane hit her target, like she had experience. |

More flashy lights than a fifty-car wreck on the freeway. The media has to have something to air incessantly, even if it is the same image of four cops skulking low and the rest waiting around in parking lots.
But I also know these villains had rifles. Elliot Ness (remember him?) and his feds faced real machine guns. Ness and his boys did it in suits and ties. Think about that. Closed down no streets. Faced murderers just as brazen and callous, even if those guys did pick their victims differently, with collateral damage. Dead victims everywhere. |

These are confusing times, as a generation unfamiliar with the nature of evil senses a gathering storm. It's easy to blame guns when you don't understand that the West is engaged in a multi-front struggle for existence with evil.
What is happening in San Bernardino, in Paris, in small Coptic churches, and on the streets of London isn't about guns, knives, and high-capacity magazines. It's about an experience familiar across the ages: when evil starts to march.
These horrors are the experiences of individuals across history, when the very existence of domestic tranquility is jeopardized. Instead of fleeing our village for the safety of the next, we simply don't go shopping or out to dinner -- at least for now. |

Less than two years after a court ordered Phoenix to allow gun-rights activists to plaster city bus shelters with the slogan “Guns Save Lives,” officials have once again attempted to censor advertisements containing the emotionally charged phrase.
The new ads, much like the signs that sparked a four-year legal battle in 2010, feature the “Guns Save Lives” slogan inside a heart and direct viewers to visit TrainMeAZ.com, a website run by a coalition of local shooting-related businesses that promotes firearm safety and marksmanship classes. |

Yesterday's brutal shootings in San Bernardino, California, have reignited America's long-running debate over guns. Much of that debate is currently focused on violent criminal acts committed with the help of firearms. That focus is understandable in the aftermath of this horrific event. But it's important to remember that firearms routinely serve noble purposes as well. For example, guns played a key role in the Civil Rights Movement and its long campaign to achieve racial equality. To illustrate that point, here are three stories from the Reason archives that discuss the ways in which privately owned guns helped to expand freedom and secure civil rights for countless numbers of black Americans. |

California added a new layer to its gun control laws last month when the Governor signed legislation banning permitted concealed firearms on college campuses. Previously, California law made it illegal to have a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school or college campus, but had an exemption for those with concealed carry permits. In California, a county sheriff or police chief may issue a permit to a resident allowing him or her to carry a concealed weapon when certain requirements are met including a background check and proof of 16-24 hours of training. |

What is your everyday carry (EDC)? These are the items you simply don’t leave home without, and it can vary greatly from person to person. In this article we have compiled a list of the EDC items carried by both men and women of all walks of life across the United States. An individual’s age, gender, and occupation can have a huge affect on what he or she will—or can—carry, and this sample provides a neat snapshot into what the average American with a CCW has rolling around in their pockets.
There’s plenty of conclusions that can be made here, but mostly it’s an interesting comparison to see. One thing that might be skewed in this list is the above-average amount of high-priced knives.
