Lt. Gov. Cyrus Habib issued an order last week that bars the public from carrying firearms into the state Senate viewing galleries. It takes effect when the Senate is in session starting Jan. 8. As presiding officer in the Senate, Habib cited employee safety in his decision and said a Senate rule lets him maintain decorum and order in the chambers. The Democrat, elected in 2016, also wants cost estimates for installing metal detectors at the doors to the galleries.

Only days after Washington Lt. Gov. Cyrus Habib unilaterally declared the state Senate viewer gallery to be a “gun free zone,” the state’s largest newspaper reinforced its anti-gun editorial policy by calling for a ban on firearms throughout the state capitol in a Friday editorial.

In a bizarre coincidence, the state Department of Licensing released updated data Friday showing that there are now 591,366 active concealed pistol licenses in the state. This figure keeps the Evergreen State in the Top Ten per capita states where licensed concealed carry is the law, and it represents an increase of nearly 20,000 new CPLs since January.

Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge joined a coalition of 25 states urging Congress to pass legislation to allow law-abiding individuals to travel state to state while lawfully exercising their right to carry. In the letter sent today to House and Senate leadership, the attorneys general explained that the Second Amendment historically has guaranteed the right to carry firearms outside the home for self-defense, but some states refuse to recognize any out-of-state concealed carry permits. The Attorneys General believe Congress should enact concealed carry reciprocity legislation to help implement the right to self-defense.

Last Sunday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi created a mess for herself by insisting on NBC's "Meet the Press" that Rep. John Conyers deserves "due process" in the face of a series of accusations of improper conduct.

The first couple of weeks after the opening of deer season, I spend most of my available time sitting in a tree with my bow waiting on a mature buck. I really enjoy the peace and solitude of being in nature. It is a great way to relieve work stress and all the pressure that builds from a busy work schedule. If a shooter walks by and I get lucky to make a kill shot I will take it. However, understand that if nothing shows up, it is still a blessing to be able to enjoy the great outdoors.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
