... "Sandra Froman is only the second woman and the first Jew ever to hold the volunteer position of NRA president. While there are certainly other Jews on her side of the gun debate (including several NRA board members), the vast majority of American Jews and much of the organized Jewish community consistently support gun control measures. Hadassah, B'nai B'rith, the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, the American Jewish Committee and others have been essentially 'blacklisted' by the NRA on its website. Yet here is a Harvard Law-educated Jewish woman emerging as a leader on—as she herself teases—'the dark side.'" ... |

... "Bob Arwady runs the Ammo Dump, a gun store in Houston, Texas. His first exposure to the abuses of sovereign immunity came from a knock on the door from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. After operating his new shooting range for police and public shooters for four months, the Commission shut him down with the threat of fining shooters $5,000 for each bullet they put in the dirt berms used as bullet traps. They claimed that they had a water sample that proved that those bullets were leaching lead in dangerous quantities into the stream behind his range and polluting water downstream."

"The good news was that overall progress was being made towards protecting civilians in armed conflict, the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Jan Egeland, told the Security Council today -- there were fewer armed conflicts, better humanitarian and peacekeeping work and better mediation than before -- but, the bad news was that the armed groups were more ruthless than ever, intent on making the situation as bad as possible for the defenceless civilian populations." [emphasis added]
"... Mr. Egeland warned that, in 2006, the abuse of civilian populations had regressed to the 'darkest Middle Ages'. The violations were really crimes against humanity and war crimes, which, in some cases, amounted to genocide, he said." ... |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
"And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling in terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand? [...] The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt!" —Alexander Solzhenitsyn, The Gulag Archipelago (Chapter 1 "Arrest") |
