"Today's announcement that the Interior Department has amended its rules and will henceforth allow licensed concealed carry in national parks was hailed as a victory for the Second Amendment by the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms."

"'No longer will American citizens be required to leave their right of self defense at the gates of a national park,' said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. 'This common-sense change in regulations reflects not only changes in the laws of 48 states, but more importantly the Supreme Court's ruling in June that upheld the individual right to keep and bear arms that is protected by the Second Amendment.'" ...

"Gun Owners of America is a right wing, no-compromise lobbying organization. ..."

"During the speech, Pratt spoke about D.C. v. Heller, in which the Supreme Court ruled that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual's right to keep and bear arms"

"He also discussed the likely implications on gun control policy of the incoming Obama administration and a Congress controlled by Democrats. He predicted that there will be a legislative attempt to renew the Clinton gun ban within two years among other pro-gun control agendas." ...

... "Guns and ammo sales are up since the election of Barack Obama. And they've stayed bullish, fueled by everything from conspiracy talk at gun shows to a sales tax-free gun shopping weekend in South Carolina."

"Taking a bird's eye view of it, as shaken out from a selection of headlines from counties across the nation, the drivers of the surge seem remarkably consistent." ...

"A common thread was it's a response to the Democrats, or rather, fear of them. Gun sales traditionally spike a bit when they come to Washington - it also happened when Bill Clinton ascended to power. Although Barack Obama has said he wants common sense regulation and respect of the second amendment, this really makes no difference." ...

"We're still more than a month away from Inauguration Day. The US economy and bailout money remain hot topics amongst the chattering classes. Who should Washington bailout next? Is there a single industry left that doesn't merit a bailout when the buzzards are circling?"

"One American industry, however, is experiencing a pre-inauguration 'Obama boom' - firearm manufacturing. Several news outlets have reported on a surge in firearm sales prior to and in particular following the election. ... The only reason sales haven't continued at such a frenzied pace is a lack of guns available for sale." ...

"Even at mid-afternoon, a steady stream of customers came to the gun department. Cabela's in Hammond, Ind. is a scrupulously law-abiding weapons dealer."

"Ken Roper was one of many new gun buyers today, taking home a nine millimeter semi-automatic handgun with a magazine that holds 19 bullets. Like most of those who talked to us, he said he's afraid that Democrats who won the White House and huge majorities on Capitol Hill plan to impose new gun controls." ...

"Suburban gun shops report that sales are up since Barack Obama was elected president, because gun buyers are afraid Obama will push to ban ownership of some weapons."

"'Of course they're up -- 25 to 30 percent over last year,' said a salesman at Midwest Guns & Pistol Range ... 'It's across the board -- sales are up on everything.'"

"'Definitely, it's because of Obama,' said a saleswoman at Freddie Bear Sports ... The saleswoman ... said that the boost is more for the 'long guns,' like AK-47s and assault rifles."

"A spokesman for the Illinois State Police confirmed that the agency conducted 24,076 background checks for gun purchases in November, 39 percent more than the 17,363 during the same month a year ago. ..." ...

"Guns sales always go up at Jerry's between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve, said Jerry Stehlman, who owns the store. People buy a variety of guns for their loved ones each year, he said, but he predicts this year sales will skyrocket post-presidential election. "As Slate's Jack Shafer noted last month, everybody is doing the 'Barack Obama election=surge in gun sales' story. ..."

"The story followed the national script with recent stats from Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. Oakland, for instance, recorded 769 concealed weapons permits in October 2008 compared with 328 in October 2007."

"Obama backs, as Wilkins quotes from the Obama website, 'commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners.' Specifically he has said he'll close a loophole allowing the purchase of firearms without background checks at gun shows and renew the expired federal ban on assault weapons."

"Hence the mentality of get-them-while-you-can — and a surge in sales." ...
