"NRA must, this afternoon, alert its members to oppose Halligan, and, as they failed to do with Eric Holder, put senators on notice that a confirmation vote will be scored against them—especially the so-called 'pro-gun Democrats' we’ve heard so much about. It would take NRA all of an hour and the cost of emailing their membership list to make this happen." ...

"Caitlin Halligan is Obama's nominee for a seat on the Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. She formerly served as Solicitor General for the State of New York from 2001 until 2007 under then-NY Attorney General Elliot Spitzer. Her nomination is being filibustered in the Senate due to her leftist views on abortion and gun rights. Tomorrow, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is calling for a cloture (end of debate) vote on Halligan's confirmation."

NRA to make serious push for suppressor (aka 'silencer') law reform?

... "... the successful loosening of Missouri's suppressor laws, along with the Michigan Attorney General reinterpreting state law as not restricting suppressor possession beyond federal law, perhaps indicates a significant change in attitudes regarding suppressors. That possibility may be what has perhaps motivated the NRA to challenge the status quo, as seems to be indicated by this NRA article from a couple weeks ago:"

"How should you feel when one of your favorite guns, an American classic that had served cowboys, lawmen, deer hunters and recreational shooters for over a century, simply vanishes from store shelves? It happened before: we lost a classic .22 pistol when High Standard vanished, and a little piece of us died when Winchester imploded and the Model 1894 moved to Japan to be 'resurrected' as high-priced custom gun. Now, sadly, it has happened again…"

"The term 'free float handguards' is something you see a lot on 'precision' AR-15 builds — guns designed to pluck the wings off a fly from 500 yards. But what exactly do they do? One reader asked about them as a fix for barrels becoming too hot (see Friday's Ask Foghorn), but that’s not really their intended purpose. As Barack Obama prepared to take office, for example, rumors began spreading that he was about to issue an executive order banning handgun sales and even banning sale of ammunition, which then led to shortages of ammunition on the shelves, which was then cited as evidence that the ammunition ban was coming true."

"Re 'Lawmakers demand colleges allow guns' (Monitor front page, Nov. 25): I have an idea. Why don't we start at preschool with plastic guns to get comfortable. By middle school, non-automatic weapon training. By junior high, automatic weapons, and by high school other weapon training so that by college they can be ready for all the terrorists and bogeymen in New Hampshire." ...
-------

Submitter's Note: How about we just teach the kids age-appropriate gun safety starting in preschool. Then once they reach middle school they should be ready to handle firearms without any unsafe habits that might have been instilled by toy guns. When they turn 15 they take Drivers' Ed and a CCW course so when they hit 16 they can get their CCW and DL together (assuming that we haven't gotten Constitutional Carry recognized as the proper law of the land that is).

"'This is a serious matter of public safety,' Schneiderman said at a press conference last Wednesday surrounded by guns purchased illegally by undercover investigators." ...

"'In addition to filing criminal charges against the sellers and demanding that the gun show operators cease and desist from illegal practices, my office plans to work with the Legislature to hold gun show operators liable when guns are sold at their gun shows without requiring a background check,' Schneiderman said." ...
