"Twenty years ago, I responded to an ad about national health care. I phoned the advertiser who said that he was taking no side on the issue, but only encouraging debate. I wasn't fooled: his side was to pry the best health care from our warm, healthy hands and try to get us involved in its demise. This is what ‘debate' can do: it obtains cooperation from the contented and free when the debates were already carried out long ago and settled. From there, interference and being part of a ‘debate' is like cutting your own throat. As Marie Parente said, 'Once you sit down to negotiate what you already have, you lose.'" ... |

"In the past few years, the U.S. Supreme Court has given gun-control opponents much to cheer about."
"In 2008, the court ruled that the Second Amendment protects the individual right to possess a firearm for private use inside one’s home. Two years later, the court essentially extended that ruling to the states."
"But according to this recent story in the ABA Journal, the Heller and McDonald decisions have not spelled doom for cities' and states' gun-control efforts. According to the story, 'while there have been challenges throughout the country to local, state and federal gun laws, few have been successful.'" ... |

"No, the risk of coming under violent assault in (for example) the Ozark National Scenic Riverways has probably not yet approached the level it is here in St. Louis (rated 'most violent city' in 2009), but 'getting away from it all' does not necessarily mean getting away from all of the risk of violence. A New York Times article about the risks faced by park rangers quotes an interesting observation:" ... |

... "Asked if workers should arm themselves against the possibility of a workplace attack, Cordivari said no. Saying he was speaking from a practical, not a Second Amendment, standpoint, Cordivari said he envisioned scenes of gun wielding workers chaotically firing at one another because no one could identify the original shooter. Answering the same question, Wolff said some companies in Stamford have informed police that they employ armed, plainclothes security officers. A good thing, Wolff said, because a police officer responding to a workplace shooting would necessarily be focused on anyone in the place with a gun." ... |

"Where has Gov. Rendell been for the last eight years? Obviously not reading local papers regarding the crime situation in Pennsylvania and an individual's ability to protect himself. Instead, he has been in bed with numerous governors and mayors and those in the United Nations whose intent it is to disarm American citizens who, thus far, are protected by the Constitution's Second Amendment." ... |

"In 1892, the racist Arkansas legislature passed the 'poll tax', charging citizens one dollar (a large amount of money during this period of history) to exercise their constitutional right to vote. The poll tax law was passed during the heyday of 'Jim Crow laws', with the intent of stopping a majority of blacks and other poor 'free' men from electing unwanted lawmakers. ..." ...

"Virtually all states have a state bird, a state flower and a state motto. But Utah soon could be among the first to have an official state firearm — the Browning model 1911 .45-caliber handgun, designed by Utah gunmaker John Moses Browning."
"Rep. Carl Wimmer, R-Herriman — a former police officer, a life member of the National Rifle Association and an instructor for concealed weapons classes — wants to take a shot at creating that designation when the Legislature convenes next month. At least one anti-gun-violence group bemoans the move but sees no real harm." ... |

"Arkansas has now made it official - House Bill 1051 was pre-filed Tuesday by Representative Denny Altes of Fort Smith. HB1051, appropriately titled the Defensive Carry Restoration Act (DCRA), will restore the rights of citizens to freely carry handguns for self-defense."
"This legislation (which will not affect the current Concealed Handgun Carry License Law in any way) is designed to allow open carry by the people of Arkansas without requiring an expensive permit. The carrying of a concealed firearm without a permit, however, will still be deemed illegal." ... |

... "Despite his allocution, the council issued Jolly a one-year suspension. Twenty-six other officers also received discipline on Monday that ranged from a revocation of their police powers down to issuing them a letter of caution." ... -------
Submitter's note: These punishments have nothing to do with abuse of the citizen. They're all DUIs or improper sexual relationships. Unless we the citizens wake up and demand local citizen review boards WITH POWER, these will be the only crimes government employees ever get charged with. Assaults by police, sometimes aggravating felonies (see Denver P.D.) rarely get prosecuted. It is almost as if these cops are only prosecuted because they made fellow cops look bad. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom of Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any bands of regular troops that can be, on any pretense, raised in the United States. — Noah Webster in "An Examination into the Leading Principles of the Federal Constitution," 1787, in Paul Ford, ed., Pamphlets on the Constitution of the United States, at p. 56 (New York, 1888). |
