Armed teachers could one day become the norm in Central Texas schools. State law currently allows teachers to carry concealed handguns, as long as they are licensed and allowed by their districts. The Texas Government Code includes a provision that allows firearm instructors, who participate in a training course, to teach educators how to use concealed weapons to protect their students. On Friday, the Texas Department of Public Safety wrapped up its first-ever training course. Among the twelve participants was local firearm instructor Bruce Kaase. |

The Texas legislature is considering a law that would allow churches to hire security officers. Many Wichita Falls churches have security, but not everyone believes armed guards belong in church. "If you think you need to have a gun to go to church, or have someone there to guard you, it makes me wonder if we need to test the depth of our faith," Cheryl Murray, Pastor of Wesley United Methodist Church, said. "Maybe we are just sticking our big toe in the shallow end instead of diving all in." |

Gun violence research is notoriously hard to fund. Since 1996, when an National Rifle Association-pressured Congress pulled all Centers for Disease Control and Prevention funding for gun-related research, UC Davis epidemiologist Garen Wintemute has shelled out over $1 million of his own money to keep his Violence Prevention Research Program going. That investment has paid off; 20 years later, the UC Davis program is one of the best in the country, and this week published a study finding registered California gun owners with a DUI or other alcohol-related crime on their record are four to five times more likely to be arrested for crimes involving a firearm.

The Army today confirmed the caliber for its new Modular Handgun System will be 9mm, one week after the service announced it selected a version of Sig Sauer’s P320 to replace the M9 service pistol.
Army officials sent out a press release with additional details on the MHS but did not explain why the service chose 9mm, a decision that Military.com asked the Army to explain its reasoning behind.
The selection of 9mm is a shift from one of the goals of the MHS effort. Army officials at Maneuver Center of Excellence said in 2014 that the Army and other services want a sidearm chambered for “a round that will have better terminal effects — or cause more damage — when it hits enemy combatants” than the current 9mm round.

Ruger updated its American Pistol product line with the addition of the Compact Pro model in .45 ACP in 2017, removing the thumb safety present in earlier models. The Pro model incorporates a trigger-bar safety in place of a mechanical thumb safety, removing a potential stopping block for those using the gun for self-defense. Another safety feature is an automatic sear-block system. The pistol also features a short-takeup trigger with a positive reset, made possible the company's use of a pre-tensioned striker system. |

This is the fourth year in a row that lawmakers have considered proposals to arm or better protect Maine Forest Service rangers who patrol the state’s vast timberlands. Past proposals have fallen victim to cost concerns and political wrangling.

Gun enthusiasts are aiming to lift a ban on silencers, saying the devices long associated by Hollywood with gangsters and assassins have practical uses such as protecting hearing and reducing the noise at shooting ranges. Massachusetts is one of nine of states that ban silencers, sometimes called sound suppressors. While law enforcement is allowed to use them, the general public is not. |
