While the national Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act seems stalled in the U.S. Senate after last December’s passage in the House, CBS’ “60 Minutes” will take a look at the controversy Sunday evening.
Reporter Steve Kroft will be talking to Tim Schmidt, president and founder of the U.S. Concealed Carry Association, along with anti-gun Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance and New York City Police Commissioner James O’Neill. Also appearing, according to a CBS promotional announcement, will be Congressman Richard Hudson (R-NC), who sponsored H.R. 38, and Robyn Thomas of the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. |

“Rise Now and Fly to Arms!” That was Henry Highland Garnet’s exhortation to young black men when Abraham Lincoln finally opened the Union Army to black soldiers. A militant Presbyterian minister, Garnet had implored black Americans to fight slavery to the death. And when the opportunity came, he urged young black men to fight for the Union, despite the slights of unequal pay and a long delay before they were deemed worthy to serve.1 As a war hawk, Garnet advocated the ultimate form of political violence. But he also had a keen appreciation for the utility of private violence. He calculated that once black soldiers were armed and trained, America would be unable to deny their freedom, at least “not without a good fight. |

Lee Goodman had a question to ask as he walked slowly in front of the Sands Expo Convention Center. “When?” When was the firearms industry going to address mass shootings? Goodman balanced a sign stapled to a wood handle on his shoulder. The sign listed the mass shootings from Columbine to Sandy Hook and Las Vegas. On top of the purple sign in block letters was “If not now…” and at the bottom of the list of 11 shootings was his question.

I bet a lot of deer hunters woke up this morning with a lost empty strange feeling. No more deer hunting. Surely most folks are happy to see it end but on the other hand there are those who would rather keep it going. The 10 extra days in February have helped, especially in areas where the deer are still in rut, Montgomery county included. |

The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) , whose authority to sell military surplus guns lay fallow under the Barack Obama administration, has received nearly 100,000 M1 Garands and will get 8,000 M1911/M1911A1 pistols that will be available for the public to buy. The stock of repatriated M1 Garands—which had been loaned to Turkey and the Philippines after World War II, under the Military Assistance Program (MAP)—will go a long way toward replenishing the CMP’s depleted supply of the historic rifle. |

The field of modern sporting rifles—semiautomatic rifles with detachable magazines—has exploded in popularity over the past decade. The expiration of the Federal 1994–2004 Assault Weapons Ban and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan fueled an interest in these weapons. Innovation, in part due to research and development into military small arms, introduced new and interesting rifle designs. Here are the top five modern sporting rifle designs. |

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” According to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, however, acquiring arms has nothing to do with keeping and bearing them. This was the court’s logic when it ruled in John Teixeira’s case that buying and selling guns was beyond the scope of the Second Amendment. |

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., admitted she was "embarrassed" of not better understanding "gun violence" after touting her top ranking from the National Rifle Association on gun rights issues when she first ran for office in upstate New York. "After I got appointed, I went down to Brooklyn to meet with families who had suffered from gun violence in their communities. And you immediately experience the feeling that I couldn't have been more wrong. You know, I only had the lens of upstate New York," Gillibrand told CBS in an interview that aired Sunday.

An Associated Press report last week sounded rather shocking. State authorities conducted a raid in Los Angeles, where they “seized more than two dozen guns and thousands of rounds of ammunition” from a man who had reportedly been barred from owning firearms. Predictably, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra bemoaned a lack of funding and a long backlog in the state’s ability to collect such weapons.

An angler I know was talking about a lake where he used to fish. Crappies, as I recall. Somewhere near Bemidji. "But then the college kids found out about it, and they hit it pretty hard," he said. It was a small lake, and they fished it down until the angler quit going there. So did the college kids. They couldn't catch enough fish to make it worthwhile. |
