I recently reintroduced S. 202, the Social Security Beneficiary 2nd Amendment Rights Protection Act, to protect Social Security beneficiaries from having their constitutional rights arbitrarily revoked. I also co-sponsored a similar Congressional Review Act resolution to halt a rule issued by the Social Security Administration in the waning days of the Obama Administration that would erode Americans’ Second Amendment rights. The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed similar legislation, and the Senate should act soon.

The time has come to assemble! And no, this isn’t a constitutional exhortation vis a vis the First Amendment from the Bill of Rights. Come to think of it, it is an exhortation with regard to the Second Amendment, though that isn’t what we mean, either. Instead, we’re back with our short/light modern sporting rifle (AR) build, and it’s time to quit talking about disembodied parts, and slap a bunch of them together. This time, we’re concerned mainly with the rear and lower assemblies of the rifle. |

By many measures, the United States leads the world when it comes to guns. It has one of the highest rates of private gun ownership – a combined total of 310 million firearms were owned by Americans in 2009, according to a 2012 study from the Congressional Research Service – and a particularly high number of gun-related deaths, whether homicide or suicide, among comparable developed nations.

Gun control measures have been gaining ground in some places around the nation in recent years. In the more urban areas of the country and along the coasts, people are more wary, and perhaps fearful, of guns. That may be why some states pass very restrictive gun laws. For instance, in New Jersey a citizen cannot even own a handgun, rifle or shotgun without a permit or Firearms Purchaser Identification Card. In some states, obtaining a concealed carry permit can take months. In Maryland and California, an individual has to prove a need to be granted a concealed carry permit. |

Dozens of people gathered at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Tampa Sunday to view the Newtown documentary about the aftermath of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The purpose was to have a conversation not just about gun violence, but its impact on communities. "Any education we can do helps people keep this in the forefront of their minds," said Joan Lund, a member of the church who helped facilitate the conversation. "And maybe they say, 'Yes, maybe I should do something about this'. And prevention is so much better than treatment afterwards." |
